Is it me or is the HTC Hero the most useless phone on the market. I was totally excited about the change from my palm Treo 755 to this new phone but after a few months I am more irritated than ever. Some problems (after the new update)

1. LAGS Big time
2. problems from time to time with internet or any application that uses the web signal (i.e. email, market weather etc...)
3. It takes over 37 seconds to actually register a call out. so frustrating when i am driving and trying to call
4. battery life is non existent- I have to charge at least twice a day!
5. A strange notification sound keeps coming on and I have no idea what it is for since nothing is displayed in the notification bar.
6. Phone vibrates on outgoing calls ever since I did the update
:(
I am not a techie person but I know a little about phones and have read most comments on various forums and folllowed popular advice. Calling HTC (the company doesn't help either since they have no idea what they are talking about and keep trying to hard reset my phone. needless to say I am frustrated.

Anyone know how I can fix any of these problems? HELP

Chances are that ROOTING (gaining admin access to) your phone will give you the results that you are looking for (read up on it in the Root: Sprint Hero subforum).

1) Stock Option - DL Spare Parts from the Market and use it to see what's running constantly. Try removing some apps from the phone (if you have a ton).
Root Option - Running a custom ROM and removing the bloatware can help speed up the phone.

2) Can you elaborate??? Not sure what exactly is happening.

3) Stock Option - Possibly related to the lag issue.
Root Option - Same fix as the lag issue.

4) Use Spare Parts to see what's keeping your phone awake.

Also go Menu>Settings>About Phone>Battery>Battery Use>Cell Standby and see what your Time Without Signal is... if it's high, let me know and we'll tackle that then...

You can also get an idea of what's keeping your phone awake from ^ instead of DL'ing Spare Parts

5) When does this occur? At random...? More information is needed.

6) Stock Option - Deal with it
Root Option - Can remove it

Here's my suggestion:

If you want to keep this phone ( which I bet you do, or you would not have posted here) , make a list of the problems you're having and do a SEARCH of this forum. Chances are they have been covered and solutions have been discussed.

Rooting solves a lot of issues, but first you need to know what rooting is and whats involved, read here: http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-sprint-hero/38911-guide-root-rom-faq-tutorial.html

If rooting is not an option for you , READ. Like I said above most issues can be resolved or fixed by some sort of app or playing with the settings.

I know it can be frustrating to obtain a piece of hardware only to find out its not performing has advertised, but that why forums like this exist, so we can find solutions to the problems. GOOD LUCK

^ Or HELP the guy... since that's the purpose of the forum :p

Forum Rules said:
Also while the search feature on forums is great, and hopefully will be utilized - if someone comes here and asks a question, either answer it or don't. If you're going to suggest the search feature, be polite about it. Nothing irks me more than when I go to a forum, (and use the search!), then ask a question because I want some one on one with my problem, and get a simple "Use the search." reply. Suggesting it is encouraged, but don't withhold the answer because they don't.

Actually that's what I'm trying to do. I apologize to the OP and admins if I my response was out of line, not within the posted rules, or un-polite ,but your suggestion up there is more likely to confuse the guy rather than help him ( I have rooted my phone the hard way and even I found your response a bit too techie) . That's why I suggested doing some searching and reading about the options he has to fix the issues. Rooting is one of them, has you suggested, but without proper knowledge it could do more harm than good, hence my link to the rooting guide.

Again if you feel my response was out of line , I'll gladly edit...

Thank you. I am new and this is my first thread. Resulted from complete frustration with my phone.
Me and my wife have had our since Dec. 30th. We love them. Never rooted and still 1.5. I find new things for it and things to do with it every day. I had a little dust cleaned out by the Sprint store after three months but other than that no complaints. TC :D

Makes sense, I apologize if I was out of line then! :) Thank you for clarifying!!!

I just see so many times when people say "search" or was told that when I first started that I often wish(ed) that someone had told me the answer then offered more help if I wasn't sure what they meant.

Bottom line, as long as you are trying to help and not just be rude/useless to the OP, then all is well!

No rudeness/uselessness here. I totally understand you view and its impressive and refreshing to find that you guys took the time to jolt down that rule. Good Job, you don't see that very often in other forums I visit. <---smiley with a thumbs up here

Thank you everyone... but I just read about rooting and it seems that it will void the warranty on the phone if I do that. Also, I have asked several sprint and Hero reps for help and there is nothing they can do to help me. They think the phone is running fine and tell me that I have too many contacts :(

What do you consider high? Mine is 15% which seems crazy because I've never had any signal problems with past phones.
