Could anyone recommend a car charger for the HTC Desire which is capable of keeping it charged while it is busy doing Google Maps Navigation? Is the official HTC CC200 capable of this?

I bought a generic 5V/1A USB charger from Maplin:
Micro DC to USB Adaptor : InCar Power Adaptors : Maplin

but I found that it was unable to keep the phone charged. After two hours on satnav duty the phone's charge was down from 100% to about 50%. (The phone was also very hot, but then again it was a very sunny day).

The CC200 is also rated at 5V/1A, so I don't want to spend another

I got a cheep one from Tesco that did the trick, so no need to spend lots.
Also if you have AC in the car try and put the desire near/over a vent and have some space between the back of the desire and the holder for circulation.

Oh and I did notice that sometimes it don't charge if at full, just check it is charging.

I found this thread:
http://androidforums.com/htc-desire/103694-charging-your-phone-car.html

It suggests there to search the forum for "usb car charger", which I had done, but nothing jumps out in the first few pages.

I have to say that my phone was *very* hot, too hot to hold. I'd left it on the top of the dashboard (because I don't have a car mount yet) and it was ~30C outside. So I guess the charging cut out when it got too hot.

Looks like this isn't unknown in HTC android phones:

In that case, increasing the charging current is going to help anyway, and I don't have A/C in the car. Maybe I should put the money towards a separate satnav instead :-(

As you will find when you look in those other threads recommended above. If the charger is configured to look like a USB port the desire will only draw 500ma however good the charger is. And this will not keep pace with Google maps. According to the other threads you can easily modify but:

Don't modify it if it is rated <1000ma/1a or it will blow.

I would also suggest investing in an Air vent mounted holder. Charging at 1000ma ( or even 500ma) while consuming 500ma+ in a hot car could well overheat the phone. It has some protection built in but there are reports on this forum of wrecked phones.

however good the charger cheap USB cables can be a bottle neck as well

You can tell what sort of charger the phone thinks it is connected to by looking in the battery properties when it is on charge. It will say AC or USB
I have ordered a 2a rated generic charger from Ebay (supposedly for an HD2) and it does not delivery the goods out of the box I plan to have a play with it when it arrives

I've got the very same charger from Maplins. I then opened it up and soldered pins 2 & 3 together. You will then notice when you put it on charge that it says AC instead of USB. It should also be charging a lot better as it's pulling more than 500ma now.

Could you please photo the USB charger with the pins "shorted" out, so we can get a better picture?

Ta!

Guys,

Found an interesting information for the Garmin Nuvi Sat Nav units. They use a similiar 5 pins USB pin-by-pin layout. Although some Garmin Sat Nav use Mini-B, HTC Desire uses Mini-A but essentially, the pin outs are the same in that order.

So, if you'll see the blue texts with their outcomes.....

See this link: http://pinouts.ru/GPS/garmin_nuvi_power_pinout.shtml

Any thoughts?

I have an original HTC 200 charger (minus the lead)

http://www.htc.com/sea/product/accessory/car_charger_cc-c200.html

I bought it from handtec as part of the original HTC kit but it didnt work. I called them and they sent me a replacement FOC.

Having seen this thread I thought I would just check the 'duff' one as I was wondering if I had just hadnt pushed it in hard enough.

Lol...it works. (as stated earlier when connected go into settings/battery and you will see it is AC not usb) You can tell it is working at the HTC logo illuminates.

Free to a good home providing you tip up the postage (shouldn't be more than a couple of quid at worst)

Be aware that the lead that comes with the HTC kit is charge only, no data. I wasn't aware they made these until I spent an hour on my pc wondering why the bloody phone wouldnt connect. Went and got my lead from the house charger and it connects. I confirmed with HTC the next day that any lead would work.
