Let's see... the other day someone over on XDA finds a method for us leakers to achieve root (unreliably at this point in time)...

Today... Big Red starts pushin' the "Bug-Fixer OTA"...

Just sayin'...

I doubt they did this in response to our new find... but ya never know!

Now we just need someone to tell us their hardware info that has done the new update so we can see if they changed anything to further prevent rooting...

theres been rumor and talk of this update coming for a couple of weeks now.......... I doubt very seriously it had anything to do with the recent efforts at root.......

you can rest assured though that this update will push everyones hboot to 1.49...... this will be their last ditch effort to lock down everyones phone

I'm having trouble understanding why they would want to lock down a device which has reached its end of life.

the very same reason they want to lock it down in the first place......... my guess is because of contracts with companies that provide junk like Amazon MP3, etc that they dont want removed or blocked.......

and I don't really believe that is the reason they are pushing it at this point in time... I know they've been working on it for a little while now and it was due sooner or later...

i do believe they will update the hboot for any stragglers not on 1.49... i'm sure it was easy for them to implement into the new update...

well it was always easy for them to do...... they didnt do it with the initial 2.1 update because they wanted to get 2.1 out to the masses and the vast majority of users would never even know what hboot is........so no reason to alter the bootloader

we'll have to wait til someone picks the update apart to see whats in it...... but someone said its 12.8mb which is fairly large ..... my guess would be this in part is because it contains the updated bootloader

I was V3 Leak and the update this morning shows 1.49 S-On after. Is that what V3 had before or was it just 1.49 and no S-On indicated? I don't remember from before and just hit install this morning without thinking of checking any of the software numbers first...

V3 had 1.49 S-On.

Well, the bootloader is actually pretty small (512kb), so that doesn't account for much in regards to the actual size of the update package.

As far as locking down the bootloader, VZW would have some incentive to do this to keep folks from rooting so they can't use the better tethering options (and thereby consume more bandwidth).

I don't really think that this is why they are doing this though because I don't think the number of rooted users (at least for the Eris) is really all that high. It would be interesting to know how many of us there are...

They want to lock us down so we can't flash Froyo-based ROMs. If I have the latest and greatest software and don't mind my current hardware, they lose their incentive for me to purchase a new phone and sign a new contract. Additionally, root is a nightmare for then to deal with from a customer support perspective. And finally, it does have to do with keeping crapware on your phone. These companies give Big Red lots of money to be permanently embedded on the phones.

Having said that, my perspective is that I own this phone and should be able to do what I want. Thus, I will deny any update and root to Ivan's ROM this weekend.
