Deciding on desire.

Ok, after contemplating and nearly purchasing the hero, I decided it was just not reliable enough as I did not want to return it every phew months due to touch screen problems or any number of the many other faults it suffers from. So after doing some reading on the desire I have really liked what it offers and will probably purchase one this week. I have just a phew questions whose answers could even further convince me on my purchase. I just hope that some of you don't refuse to help me simply because I have been speaking against the "lets point out iphone faults" behavior. Help me if you will, if not then so be it.

(Keeping in mind this will be bought unlocked and not through a carrier).

1. The apps2sd or what ever it is, unless rooting, this will only be available with the update right?

2. Speaking of the update, since I will not be on a carrier will I get the txt message when the update is available? Do I need to pay or is it free?

3. Rooting. is it worth it or should I wait for the update? Which is better?

4. Does anybody know of a dictionary app for android? I would like one similar to the app "dictionary" on my mac which has dictionary and thesaurus. I tried looking in the android market but apparently only a number are accessible on computer and the full range can only be found through the device. I do a lot of writing and I would LOVE if this were available! I would even pay the $29 that the iphone app store is selling it for.

5. This is in regard to ring tones. I am wondering if there is a way to cut or edit your own mp3s, so to speak, so that when it rings it plays not from the start but where you have chosen. (I think), I heard that the hero can do this or there is an app maybe?

2. you will get a notification on the top bar, updates are usually free
3. if you can wait for 2.2 then there isnt a lot of point in rooting the desire as far as i can see
4. I have seen dictionary apps available but never tried one.
5.you can do this on the phone though the music app and also through third part apps with more options and control.

3. I rooted my phone. I was really nervous, but the instructions in the sticky in the root sub-forum (look up) are very clear. It wasn't difficult in the end and I now have app2sd and it makes a huge difference. When froyo is rolled out I will be able to update anyway - I think though I'll have to wait until it hits the HTC site rather than have it install OTA

4. There are plenty. I use dictionary.com which gives you all the functionality of the website on your phone (plus a little "Word of the Day" widget for your homescreen to boot). There are alternatives. Most are totally free. All I think require a wifi/3G connection though. I've never searched for one that dls an entire dictionary to the device in one.

4. i'm using the ColorDict dictionary from market..it's good replacement for Dictionary.com IMO, plus you can customize the word libraries you would like to use..

5. the desire has a native ringtone trimmer..once you choose a song > Menu > Set as Ringtone > Trim the Ringtone...

by using this, you can adjust the start and end of the ringtone and assign it accordingly..

Nope, you just have to download the 'resources' of the app itself that would be saved on your SD card, therefore you don't need to be online. After installing ColorDict, it would give you instructions on how to install the said resources..

Heard this is equal to stardict in linux. I like stardict very much and now just hesitating whether this dictionary is a good one in android. I alreay have a lot of libraries with stardict that I hope it works with colordict too. Are you really satisfied with the interface and other things of color dict? can you send some screenshots. I want to decide on android only if I find a very complete dictionary like babylon or stardict.
