Google Apps For Your Domain Problems

Anyone else having issues with your GAFYD account on the Droid? So far I have found the following issues:

1. Cannot buy paid apps in the market.
2. Unable to use my maps layer in maps app.

The first issue is easily resolved by adding a gmail account (and setting it not to sync, so as to not disturb the GAFYD account whic already recieves mail from the gmail account). I am unsure of any workarounds for the second problem.

For what it is worth, the guy at the Verizon store told me the market problem was because Verizon intentionally limited GAFYD functionity on android phones. He said this after I told him I had no problem on my G1 for the past year. Is it true? I wonder if Droid Eris has the same problem?

There are probably other issues that I have not discovered yet.

Edit:

2 was resolved by doing a factory reset and using a Gmail account from the beginning (this would resolve 1 also). But it created a new issue:

3. When adding GAFYD as a secondary account, you are not given an option for syncing the calender. Any solutions?

Sharing the GAFYD calender with gmail will not work. It only shows when you are busy with no details or sync.

Edit again: After fiddling around with the accounts it seems to work like this...you can share gmail calender details and management with GAFYD, you can still use the GAFYD calender when on a computer and have access to this on the phone if you add it to the gmail calender when creating the event (NOT the GAFYD calender). So I think everything is set for now.

I just have a @gmail acct for the apps and maps and junk and then have my GAFYD acct for my email and what not.... Just grab a gmail acct for a sync point and what not... The price is right.

So I just did a factory reset and used my gmail account instead of GAFYD. It seems to have worked EXCEPT I am not given the option of syncing the calender. Any way to do this?

dawg.. we GOTTA find another way to say google-apps-for-your-domain

I don't like it anymore than you do, but that seems to be a popular acronym, right? GAFYD is weird, but writing google apps for your domain everytime is just way too many characters.

Let's focus on finding a workaround for the calender first. Then we can think of a new name.

Make sure the admin for your GAFYD account has enabled mobile access for your calendar. Here is the setting on my account. I have a check box right in front of the "Enabled" line.

jacqueline there might be onto something

also.. inside the calendar itself, you might need to make sure you've shared out your calendar to the gmail acct that you used to initialize your phone

(only thought of that because of what jacqueline said)

Can you explain this in more detail? I cannot find a box that says "Enabled". I gone in to the mobile setting of the calender and verified my phone.

Right now I have my gmail calender syncing to the phone. My GAFYD account has full access to view and edit event details for the gmail calender. Therefore I can create and edit events on my phone and still be able to view them on a computer through the GAFYD calender. I can create and edit events on the GAFYD calender and make give my phone access to these events by selecting my gmail account from the dropdown box in the GAFYD calender.

I hope that all made sense. It seems to work OK for now. Not very straightforward, but it gets the job done. If you have a lot in your GAFYD calender already then you would need to export that the gmail and select the gmail account when creating all future events.

  1. 1. Make sure you are signed in with an administrative account for your domain.
  2. 2. From mail, select "Manage this domain." (Top right menu)
  3. 3. Click "Mobile" (The last option in the 2nd column on my screen)
  4. 4. Check "Enable Google Sync"

Let me know if you still have trouble finding it.

I got mine today and was able to sync contacts, but it was a bit weird. It looks like it only synced contacts that had a phone number. I edited one and added a mobile phone, then it showed up.

Now my Exchange account has synced and my contact list is very full, so it is hard to tell the difference.

Try editing a contact in your GAFYD account and make sure there is a mobile number, then see if it syncs after.

I never had any trouble syncing the contacts, just the calender. In order to get all the features to work including paid apps and all the map layers, you cannot use a GAFYD account as the core account on the phone (the one you enter the first time it turns on when you get it). You can add GAFYD as an additional account later on to sync email and contacts, but you are not given the option to sync the calender. I wonder if this is the case for all secondary accounts or just GAFYD? I added an exchange account that sync the calendar to "corporate calendar", but a second exchange account also would not give me the option of syncing to the calendar (just email and contacts).

Jacqueline, there is a setting that lets you choose between syncing all contacts and only contacts with phone numbers (actually, I think it syncs them all but only shows contacts with phone numbers).

FWIW, I had absolutely no problem at all synching my Google Apps calendar with the Droid Eris. Under Settings|Data Sync|Google| it listed Gmail, Contacts, and Calendar. But I had to return my Eris for other problems it had.

There are a couple of threads in the Eris forum here from folks who don't see Calendar as an option under Google Synching, so I have to think this is not a phone or OS problem but rather something at the Google Apps domain or admin level.

Edit to add:
I haven't tried the maps layers yet. Is anyone still having an issue with it?

Thanks.

I am still going through all the settings and having way too much fun getting everything setup!

I have my GAFYD account as my base account. My calendar from it synced without a problem. I have a 2nd gmail.com account added and also have Exchange for work. I am not using the calendar from the 2nd gmail account as it is email only. The GAFYD and Exchange calendars are both syncing fine, and I have one of my home screens setup now with widgets for both calendars. I really like the way that works a lot.

So the basic steps I did:
1) Verify mobile was enabled in GAFYD
2) Initialize phone with GAFYD account and set it to sync calendar, contacts, and gmail
3) Add Exchange email account and set it to sync Corporate Calendar and Contacts
4) Add gmail.com account and set it to sync Gmail. Contacts is not checked, and on this one calendar does not show up as an option. I think you are right that the calendar is only available on the primary account.

Auto sync and Background data are also both selected.

I have used paid apps without issue. I already had the gmail.com account setup with Google Checkout, and it automatically used it when I went to the market.

I found the setting you referred to on the contacts. It wasn't in the main settings, so I went to contacts, menu, display options and found "Only contacts with phones." It was off, so I turned it on. Thanks!

One other thing, I have a separate google account setup using the same email address as my GAFYD account that does my Google Voice and iGoogle. I don't know what impact that has.

With that last setting, everything is working fine now. Thanks!

I'm reading that many of you are using GAFYD successfully on the Droid. What steps are you taking to get this to work? My GAFYD doesn't have a gmail.com ending so how are you guys adding it as an account to the Droid? Am I making any sense? I'd love to get my email and calendar set up. Thanks in advance for your help.

For the username use name@domain.com...that's all I did.

That is exactly what I did too.

Also, I setup a gmail account setup under google voice and igoogle with the same name@domain.com email address before putting my GAFYD on my phone.

The only thing I have found to not work with my account is My Maps on the navigation. Not a big deal, but hopefully it gets fixed in the future.

Thanks to both of you for the straightforward suggestion that I simply add my GAFYD account. I was stuck on trying to add it as my primary account doesn't work. I'm not syncing my email and my contacts but am uncertain as to how you may be syncing your calendar. Here's what I've done so far:

- I've initialized my phone with my name@gmail.com account.
- I've added my name@mydomain.com GAFYD account and am syncing my email and contacts.
- I've got my work Exchange email and calendar set up.

Now, how do I get my GAFYD calendar to sync with the calendar app? Do you guys have some clear steps to get this to work?

Lastly, I'm sure glad I found this forum. The Droid is my first foray into a full-blown smart phone and I'm glad everyone has been so helpful.

I have a google apps related question so this seemed liked a good place to ask. I've just added my google apps account so I now have that and my gmail account. So now when i hit the Gmail icon on the droid it takes me to whichever account I last had open. Is it possible to setup seperate icons/shortcuts for each account?

What I've seen is that you can only sync your calendar with your phone's primary account. This means if you want to sync your GAFYD calendar with your phone, you need to setup the phone with it instead of the gmail.com account. I posted the steps a few posts above.

I got a weirder problem.

My GAFYD main login cannot be set up on the Android - b/c I use a complicated 20 char password and after 17 characters the DROID stops accepting character input.

Can anyone else verify this?

I am not aware of a maximum, but would not be surprised to see 16 characters as a limit on a phone OS.

OK, everything seems to be working now. The only thing I have left are my Tasks. First off, is there any way to sync my tasks to the Droid from my GAFYD account? Second, I can have my tasks show up in my GAFYD calendar online but the tasks don't show up in the synced calendar on my droid.. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks!
