Hummingbird vs TI OMAP 3630

Name says it all. Now that the Samsung Galaxy S is coming to all carriers with a 1ghz hummingbird processor, you think it will be faster than the Droid X's TI OMAP 3630? Not just speed but 3D graphics also.

The Droid X has a OMAP 3640 from what I've read.

Ive heard the droid x processor is slightly faster but the gpu on the galaxy s is light years ahead something like 90 million triangles per second compared to 14 on the x but 14 is still higher then any other phone on the market and the same power as the ipgone4 gpu.

Yea the gpu in the Hummmingbird is better. The cpu in the OMAP is better...lol

The OMAP's use the same gpu as the one in the Hummingbird, but that model isnt being used in the OMAP's until the 4430 and 4440, dual core chips. (the OMAP 3630/40 is using the PowerVR 530, the Hummingbird is using the PowerVR 540)

These 2 are the chips to try to get right now. I expect the Galaxy S to be a better gaming phone too.

(I still dont think we know which cpu is in the X...lol Whatever it is its very nice)

the galaxy is a nice phone man. i would get it if i knew they would support it post release. Even though,touchwiz makes me cringe. I hope samsung doesnt take too long in providing their userbase froyo

I have to say the same thing, upgrading to the X from a Blackjack and some of the BS I have dealt with relating to Samsung makes me never want another of their phones again.

But if the phone is rooted and you can load custom ROMs on it, is Samsung support really that important? I think the hackers out there will have faster response time than any manufacturer out there, not just Samsung.

Yeah I dont know how much I will trust Samsung, especially with all these phones being released to different carriers...There will probably be a lot of customer service calls at one time, so who knows how customer service will be. But also I trust Motorolas build quality far over samsungs. I think Im still going to get an X.

Back on topic here, OMAP 3630 vs Hummingbird:

I can't stress this enough: the VAST MAJORITY of comments comparing these two processors are purely SPECULATION. There are videos out showing bits and pieces of each of these phones, but it's unlikely that their are running the fully tweaked and optimized software that they will be running at release.

There are some benchmark results out there, but I believe that these are subject to the issue listed above. Furthermore, a lot of the benchmark results we've heard about do not specifically describe what they're testing. The quadrant benchmark for example runs tests on a number of different things and then lumps everything together into one big score that really doesn't tell us a whole lot for sure: it implies that the phone is powerful, but doesn't break it down for us. (As a side note, the paid version of the quadrant benchmarker which isn't yet released will show the breakdown which will include CPU and GPU performance I believe).

If I'm wrong about any of this please correct me b/c I obviously can't read everything and may have missed something.

If not, then please realize that further discussion of this topic is likely to be largely speculative until these phones have been released for sale to the public.

that all really depends on who gets this phone at xda. Yes the hardware is good and it will be rooted thats regardless of the main point.
IF the devs and a great online community are set in place then yeah, this will be a great phone. I personally like it, but im waiting to see what the outcome is.

I think the point you are trying to bring up, is why does the X have hdmi out and the fascinate doesnt when its gpu supports it. basically you are implying that the x isnt done firmware-wise?

The same could be said about the OMAP in the X vs the Snapdragon in the EVO and Inc. Thats what ppl do before a product is released, speculate.

If going just by Quadrant, the X scored higher than any other phone running 2.1, inlcuding the Galaxy S, which has the Hummingbird.

The internal specs on the phones are almost identical. For the X to edge past the Galaxy in Quadrant gotta mean something.

This is done on a regular basis with PC cpu's. No difference here.

I guess I was getting tired when I typed that first post b/c I didn't say this: I am aware that there is relatively firm evidence that the GPU in the Hummingbird is better than the one in the DX. I haven't seen anything conclusive about the CPUs. Have I missed something?

Your mention of the HDMI exclusion does partially illustrate something I was hinting at: the performance of each of these processors isn't the only thing that will come into play. The software, firmware and each phone's hardware components will play a very large role in how the phones function.

Also, you are correct, I was implying that the DX firmware may not be finished: I have read that a number of people saying that they expect more tweaking to be done before public release.

On the quadrant test, which I'm convinced is gpu weighted, the galaxy s scores a little over 750, and the droid x is a little over 1000. I think samsung is seriously over blowing their graphics performance claims, and that any samsung or qualcomm cpu's are severely overrated compared to their TI equivalents. That, and the X will be an absolute BEAST with froyo.
