Hey Droid Owners Question 4 u

First and foremost I really hate the search fxn of Androidforums.
I really hope as the year progresses they will finally fix the search function because i tried searching for my answer(because people throw fits if you ask the same question that has been answered)

and i remembered either I(or someone else) had asked about Google voice but now i can't find the thread.

Anyway

My questions are

1)Who here is using Google voice? If you are, what plan on are you using google voice and how much are you saving in comparison to when you didn't use google voice

2)Google voice works on 3g right or only on Wi-fi or both? I want to know before i make the switch

3)The two numbers(Verizon number & Google Voice number)...Can I have text message forwarded to my verizon number or what? How does texting work?

Seems like i have asked this question but my memory is failing me.
Everybody is like "Google Voice, Google Voice is great" blah blah
so i wanted to know you guys opinions and answers for those questions
and is it really worth it to switch over and start using google voice

I use it on a min voice plan with 5k texts i dont save anything using it right now because of my current plan and i have yet to move my calling full time to gvoice.

Voice need 3g/regular signal for voice, and any data connection for texts/voicemail

Yes but that would be counter productive (as it would take up a text msg) texting routes through the interwebs so no data no texting.

Also the way to save on voice plan with google voice is if you add that number to your verizon favourties plan (im not sure if this is still allowed) then when you call using google voice what it actually does is it calls your gvoice # then routes it to the number you wanted to call.

if you can do with out picture msgs, and not being able to receive texts if you dont have data then its not a bad deal.

for what it's worth you can also forward the texts to an e-mail, and i love being able tor espond to peoples texts online.

i send pictures that i take be it of myself or whatever out to people all the time
and that sucks gv doesnt have it

Gv is good if you do like confrence calls like me. i have gv on my friennds and family and whenever i do them its free

i only use google voice as of now for guys i dont want to have my real number lolz
that way if they are crazy i dont have to deal with them and have to change my real number haha

im shocked that google doesnt allow mms though

Don't forget that you can restrict Google to searching a specific site. Just add (for example) "site:androidforums.com" without the double quotes to your keywords. I use this quite a bit as many forum sites have less-than-stellar search functions.

I am. On a 1400 family plan. No idea what I'm saving as saving minutes wasn't one of the main reasons I started using Google Voice. All my outbound calls are free as I added the GV access number to my Friends & Family list. Inbound calls are billed the same way they were before GV (F&F still applies).

It's not VOIP if that's what you're asking. Calls are placed using minutes unless you use another VOIP solution along with GV.

Depends on how you intend to use it. If you have the GV app then you can text via it. You can also send and receive via any internet connected PC (via the GV site).

You can definitely forward to your VZW number if you want to use an app other than the GV app for texting. With SMS forwarding, messages will come from a 406 number but will have your contact's number in each message. My devices have always converted the number into a name if the person is in my contacts. Be aware that forwarded messsages and replies to them are billed.

Messages sent and received via the GV app are sent via data and are not billed.

Also the way to save on voice plan with google voice is if you add that number to your verizon favourties plan (im not sure if this is still allowed) then when you call using google voice what it actually does is it calls your gvoice # then routes it to the number you wanted to call.

It does not call your GV number. It uses a different number (the access number) that needs to be added to F&F for outbound calls. Adding your GV number or the access number has no impact on inbound calls. The only exception is if you set GV caller ID to display your own GV number for all inbound calls and add your GV number to F&F.

Worth is always highly subjective. We can't tell you if it's worth it to you or not. That's a call that you need to make. We can certainly help with any questions though.

For me, the following make it worthwhile:
- Ring multiple phones as coverage is unreliable for all carriers in the building I work in
- Inbound call handling (spam/block)
- Voicemail transcription
- Transfer calls
- Send/receive SMS via a PC
- Listen to voicemail on a PC
YMMV, of course, depending on your specific needs/wants (as it is with pretty much anything).

It's far less of a hassle IMO to just give out one number and have GV manage everything. Most GV features are only useful if people call your GV number.
