HTC confirm Froyo for Legend and Wildfire

Shortly after the Nexus One got its absolutely official Android 2.2 update, HTC has once again leaped out to tell us of its own Froyo offering. The Taiwanese mobile giant has informed Recombu that it's expecting "several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire" to join Google's latest green bot party "beginning in Q3." We went to the trouble of confirming this with HTC ourselves, and while this isn't really much of an update from the company's previous statement in terms of time frame, here's hoping that at least some of its customers will get the delivery before the summer fiesta ends. this is good news,

by the way, htc hero gets android 2.1 update in singapore a few days ago. heard that hero was stucked to 1.6 for quite some time. hopefully legend dun have to wait that long to get 2.2.

I'm new to android - recently got a Legend which is unfortunately branded with Vodafones stuff.

It's great to hear that the Legend should be getting 2.2 soonish, but as I understand it I will have to wait for Vodafone to make the 2.2 update available (and there's no guarantee they will at alll).

If I rooted my Legend would I then be able to update it with 2.2 (once HTC themselves have make it available of course)? And if so, would the update (and future updates) appear on my phone under "System software updates" ?

No need to actually root your phone. Just make a "gold card" and flash the standard HTC rom (you're basically just debranding your phone). It should then update when HTC release any updates and you won't be reliant on vodafone

I can then load a clean ROM based on these instructions on The Unlockr

Yup, that's basically it.
Are you running XP? If so these instructions don't quite cover some additional things you need to do. You'll have issue with drivers but that can be overcome.

Running Windows 7 - was going to try it tonight but don't have a Micro SD reader.
