Best Android App showcase sites

Hi guys,

We've got a successful Android App show case site called: 101 Best Android Apps, but we're struggling to get people to submit their apps to the site?

We get over 1 million page impressions a month, so it's worth while and the submit page we've made as simple as possible, but haven't been able to get the volume we want to it

Any suggestions/reasons would be warmly appreciated (polite though, I'm delicate )

Funny, i actually found your site last night on my own, that tells me you are doing well seo wise, that is great, obviously if you have that volume of traffic you are doing good.

one thing that turned me off last night though

the visual composition of the site, the layout, is not intuitive to a list site.

you have 1 app "featured" and the rest below in almost thumbnails that are almost impossible to read.
even the featured app, there isn't really a description of what the app does.

people want easy, we are lazy, when i think of a list type site i think the there will be a list of X items, they will be sorted vertically by the top rated item on top, and each will have a paragraph description next to or under them.

that is all on the initial page, no excess clicking, no hunting, present the info best you can as fast as you can. check your bounce rate to see what that looks like, probably kinda high as there isn't a lot of INFO or content for each list.

i would cut out the tags, categories, and topics, tags next to the featured item and paste in a description about it there.

I agree with Caddyman, there needs to be a description of what the app does. I don't think I would bother to click on the links to find out what they do, I would just look for another site to tell me what I'm looking for.

Also, based on the name '101 Best Android Applications', I was expecting a site that had reviewed, rated and ranked the apps for me. So the 'self-rating' thing wasn't quite what I expected. The 5 star rating feels a llittle too much like the same information that I could get by looking at the app list on the Market on my Droid. Your site should provide something that I can't get there.

Thanks for the feedback guys, we've had a few comments about adding more information to each application.

We were thinking about adding some sort of focus icon that when you hover/click you get the description in a little js hover box. Would that make more sense?

no cause google spiders have a hard time reading javascript. it would be easier for everyone and better for seo if you would just kill all the tags and links next to each app and plop a plain text description in there

I found your site for the first time in google results the other day too.

Maybe trying and get in contact with mods of android sites (like this) and ask if they would add a link to you. Similarily it could be a good idea to approach developers and ask the same. That'll increase your page rank massively (prob get 2 points alone if this site did it!).

Also, ask androidandme.com if they'd do a little article or frontpage piece on their site. That'd get your rep up. Don't be afraid to ask people, worst thing that can happen is they say no!

OR better yet, create an android app of your site!

Also, a blog spot on the home screen could be a good addtiiton, so people can go and read opinions etc and not just look at slightly more than what the market already does.

I agree about a simple table listing, so I can quickly scan 100 (101) apps and find anything of interest. Mouse and hover is very tedious. Hover for comments maybe.

I don't care about a screen shot (clutter), just what it does and maybe ratings. I will click and see the website anyway if it is interesting.

How do apps get listed on your website?

Today, this week, this month, makes no sense to me. What does that mean?

i agree the filters are a little strange, instead of today, this week, month, etc. it should just be all time, then be able to sort by most votes, most installs, etc.

Most important thing i think! The amount of apps i skip over in the market cuz they only have a description and no screenshot is ridiculous. Slideme market app is much better and allows screenshots.

maybe it's just because I'm a noob to the android world.... but I'm having more troubles trying to think of what I want rather than were I want to go to get it. but I just checked out 101 and it seems like a good place to look for apps.

you are right, i thought they were of the apps but alas they are the sites.

add that to the to-do list app site owner guy, screenshots of the apps, not their sites.

Wow, thanks guys, really useful feedback!

We've taken all that on board, and lots of people had been saying about the lack of descriptions. If you look now at 101 Best Android Apps I've changed it to be more of a listing with the first part of the description, does that make a bit more sense?

Also, the images can either be a screenshot of the website or whatever the user wants. You can upload any image, but lots of people are just doing a quick submission for now and not putting in good images.

You can submit your own apps by registering and then clicking on "submit" in the top menu.

Wow, I just stumbled across this site yesterday, or the day before, and had all the same recommendations as others (namely: including info about the apps, and having some sort of list, so I can quickly see the "best" ones).

Two days later and the site completely made-over. Looks great.
