This right here, is EXACTLY why I switched to Android

I'm glad I traded up to an EVO from my iPhone. It was customer service and horrible policies such as this that drove me freakin' nuts. I'm almost ashamed to say I'm a huge fan of Mac desktops. The company truly has become exactly what they have been saying it's been for years. How sad.

Apple apparently has a game plan for dealing with iPhone 4 reception complaints--and it expressly prohibits giving customers free bumpers.
According to a purported list of procedures reportedly leaked to Boy Genius Report, AppleCare representatives are being instructed on how to coach users about the proper way to handle the latest-generation smartphone:

1. Keep all of the positioning statements in the BN handy - your tone when delivering this information is important.
a. The iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. Our testing shows that iPhone 4's overall antenna performance is better than iPhone 3GS. Holding the iPhone a certain way can affect its reception.
(Credit: James Martin/CNET)
b. Gripping almost any mobile phone in certain places will reduce its reception. This is true of the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, and many other phones we have tested. It is a fact of life in the wireless world.
c. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 3GS, avoid covering the bottom-right side with your hand.
d. If you are experiencing this on your iPhone 4, avoid covering the black strip in the lower-left corner of the metal band.
e. The use of a case or Bumper that is made out of rubber or plastic may improve wireless performance by keeping your hand from directly covering these areas.

2. Do not perform warranty service. Use the positioning above for any customer questions or concerns. 3. Don't forget YOU STILL NEED to probe and troubleshoot. If a customer calls about their reception while the phone is sitting on a table (not being held) it is not the metal band.
4. ONLY escalate if the issue exists when the phone is not held AND you cannot resolve it.
5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers - DON'T promise a free bumper to customers.

If I remember correctly HTC or Sprint stated that the Evo screen separation issue was cosmetic and that it didn't affect performance...
So in short, ALL companies have some bs run around excuse when problems come up, but if demonizing Apple makes you feel better, go for it :D
I'll just sit here and enjoy my Evo, and Ipad, which is tethered to said Evo, if anyone should be demonized, it's AT&T :D

those with evo problems are getting their phone replaced.

apple is pretty much ignoring the issue.

huge difference, especially when apple is a "luxury" company. And I agree ATT is horrible, but this one isn't their fault, clearly Apple F'd up this one bad.

And PS you sit here telling us not to demonize Apple, yet you go and do it to ATT. Hypocritical much?

I hope you guys realize it has quite a bit to do with EVO, at least for me.

I had 2 iPhones before I made the switch to my EVO. I was an extremely large fan of Apple. However, due to pricing, a sudden lack of innovation, and horrible polices and lack of customer service such as this, I made the switch.

I see people all the time here complaining about their EVOs. But never once have they said they wouldn't replace your phone if you were one of the few with a problem, and never once have they given up on helping us with things they can fix without replacing the phone.

If you want proof of that, the latest update just cured grounding issues. If the iPhone had grounding issues (well, lookie here, they do!) they wouldn't spend time to make an update, they'd... well.. they'd do exactly this. Say there's an issue, but it's because of how YOU hold it not how WE designed it.

Funny, I thought Apple said there's "No wrong way to hold it" when they debuted the phone. I loved Apple when they were the spunky underdog company who went out of their way for the user. Now they've become exactly what I hated.. even what THEY hated.. they've become Microsoft.

Screw them. I'll be with Android for as long as they don't turn into the same decrepit worthless thing that Apple has become.

That is so bad that I have got to think it's fake. I'm not accusing the OP, just that the stuff could be used in an MBA class for what NOT to do.

In particular, this part:

5. We ARE NOT appeasing customers with free bumpers - DON'T promise a free bumper to customers.

You don't appease customers, you help them. You satisfay their needs. You provide the service for which they are searching. If this is a real communication, they are frakin idiots.

Evo is not perfect. iPhone is not perfect. But you can be darned sure that Evo comes out ahead with Sprint. Imagine having a sexy phone with a bad antenna on an unreliable network, and that's what owning an iP4 is for some. When iP4 works, I'm sure it's a gem, but WHEN is a problem. Same for Evo, but the Evo problems are correctable and being addressed.

I cannot wait to see if there are millions of iP4 returns, but I doubt the iLemmings will do that.

The point is no one will leave Apple. They will just buy a case and ignore the issue as long as Steve ignores it. It's like being 16 and bitching about how you hate your parents, but you never run away. :D

Apple and At&t suck big huge Oprah butt.

ALL large hardware manufacturers and carriers are evil. They will do whatever they can to deny and sweep problems under the rug, IF they can get away with it and it doesn't create disproportionate amount of negative PR.

AT&T, Apple, Dell.. Toyota.. all the same. If you think Sprint and HTC are somehow different - you're very naive.

Where did I tell you not to demonize Apple? I said go ahead if it makes you happy lol, and nowhere do I actually demonize AT&T, I just said they should be :p

In context I was just pointing out all companies have BS run around answers until enough consumer pressure is brought to force a better solution. For instance the Evo 30fps cap, HTC/Sprint answer is that it's a hardware cap, or that it was on purpose because the human eye can't perceive past 24fps blah blah, whereas XDA has shown it to be software. It's all about consumer and media pressure. Once it's shown to clearly affect sales, then they'll change their tune real quick, otherwise, "thems the apples".

RoboMonkey is correct. I am the IT guy for a small law firm, and all of our attorneys have an iPhone. 2 of the attorneys updated to the 4, and I can watch the signal drop on both of them when you touch that bottom left of the case. Yet one of the other attorneys, having seen the problem live and in person, still requested I order her one. I think the anticipated class action against Apple will succeed.

They are different. Sprint has been admitting to these problems and allowing you to replace the phone within the 30 days, or whenever for free if you have insurance.

Apple on the other hand, even if you buy their EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE Apple Care protection plan, as proven here in this article, WILL DO NOTHING FOR YOU. That's WRONG!

Yes, every computer and gadget company has problems and they all downplay problems to not get bad press. That's just the name of the game. But there's a difference in company's downplaying a problem and FIXING IT (think Microsoft and their RROD 360s) vs what Apple is doing here.

Say what you will, but this is over the top douchey, even for a big hardware/software company. It's more proof that Apple's goals all along wasn't to be a good company with good service and caring about the user, but just to use us to get to the top of the mountain so they could be in a better position to crap on our heads and watch as we gobble it up.

Jobs has helped Apple get where it is financially, but success wise... someone else could do better. He's made the company everything Apple sought out to be NOT.

This is my favorite lines. Even when you cup the whole side of the evo you still have reception you don't loose it completely like some reports I've seen from the Iphone 4. I work with cell phones everyday and we have tried this out on several other phones and guess what they still all get reception. Of course from what I've seen apple is allways like this to there customers I"m glad I didn't switch over to one afew years back.

Okay :) This is an obvious issue and Apple are treating this like an arrogant monopoly, in regards to their approach. Saying all companies are evil is far more naive of a view and quite soclialistic, by default ;) Not that you are, of course :)

Only constant is Apple IS evil :)

The good news is it is still under the 30 days. Apple cultists could bail if they wanted... but then they would not be Apple cultists then, would they? ;)

Given the complacency of Apple consumers, of COURSE Apple will respond this way to an obivous design problem. Key example why complaining and being vocal is good!

When I was about done getting my Evo set-up at the Sprint store last Friday, another customer came in who was also picking one up that the manager had held for him (like he had for me). He was switching from Apple :)

This is not to say that all iLemmings (love that term! :D ) will, or that even a majority will (see that apple fanboy vid). But they ARE out there :) That's okay, they can HAVE their lowest-common-denominator, glass house JesusPhone4. I'm loving the hell out of my Evo!!!

It's worth over $50 million potentially for Apple IF they sold each of the 1.7 million buyers (so far) a $29.95 'bumper'. Excellent business model: 1) sell them the phone for $199 - $299, 2) have a design flaw, 3) sell the lemmings, er, customers the 'fix' for $29.95 each.

No harm no foul!
