Help Euro Galaxy S & AT&T's 3g network?

I live in New York City and I'm waiting for the US. version of the Galaxy S. But in my opinion they don't look as the good as the original ( Samsung I9000 Galaxy S).

I don't like the T-mobile U.S. version which has 4 capacitive buttons instead of the original 3 button (1 physical button in the center).

My question is, if I buy the Euro version of the Galaxy S will AT&T's 3g network work? Is they way i can by the original Samsung I9000 Galaxy S and have it still work with U.S Carriers?

The European Galaxy S will work on AT&T 3G anywhere where AT&T has deployed 3G on the 1900MHz 3G band....which should be many locations. However, AT&T has been doing a lot of 3G rollouts onto the 850MHz band (which the European Galaxy S does not have) to alleviate congestion...so your mileage may vary. You will not get 3G access on any other US carrier.

Are you sure? When I looked at it, it listed 850 for GSM, but not UMTS 3G. 850 3G is really only in the US and Canada, so I can't see Samsung adding 850 3G to some phones and not others.

You're right. It's only 850 gsm. Not 3g.... damn

The catch for T-Mobile is that you have to have both frequencies to get 3G because it uses one for download and the other for upload.

And it leaked on Monday that Canada is getting the Vibrant (T-Mobile version) and not the international version.

I often travel to Europe a lot. So if I purchase Verizon's Fascinate (because I hate the looks of AT&T's Captivate) will it still work in Europe? I don't care if I don't get 3G speeds, just as long as it operates.

Rogers ,Telus and Bell all operate at 850Mz 3G (GSM). So hopefully I can purchase one of their phones and use AT&T's service.

I couldn't answer that, because I haven't looked at the Fascinate specs, but my gut instinct is no because Verizon uses CDMA not GSM technology for voice. That would require Verizon to have both a GSM and a CDMA radio (plus a 3G radio) inside the unit. That would get expensive and bulky. Generally, only AT&T and T-Mobile phones have a chance of operating in Europe.

Going with a Canadian phone should work both on AT&T and in Europe, and the Fascinate and the Vibrant look pretty similar.

No chance, if the 3G band is not listed in the spec, it is not present. The European Galaxy S will not work on T-Mobile US 3G in any shape, form, or fashion. You can "wish" a 3G band into a phone and expect it to be there.

You are welcomed to spend your $500 in proving me wrong (but probably right) however.
