Sprint, lets make more sense please?

Okay, so some of you may remember(doubtful) my thread where my battery overheated, and died. Well, when i got it i noticed it was an HTC Hero battery, and had some crud on it (obviously one out of the back), but i was so in need of a battery i didn't really care, and figured i would have it replaced when i got back home.

Get back home, call sprint. Since i didn't buy the phone from sprint online, i have to return it back to RadioShack in order to get the right battery. Okay, that's fine, minus the fact that i took it to a sprint corporate store, which was recommended by sprint themselves, and they replaced the battery with my insurance. Where does this make sense? So i have to wait till July 5th, and then take it to the store and have them replace it. Seriously? I know rules are rules..but come on..

FULL STORY :

I bought the phone at Radioshack on June 4th. Everything was perfect. I was charging the battery with a car charger on a trip down to Florida. I have a temp gauge on my phone, and when i looked at it, it was at 130 degrees. As soon as i saw that, it shut down the phone. Well, i went down to the Corporate store in Daytona Beach, Florida, and told them what happened. He took out a battery out of his showcase evo, and put it in mine. It fired right up. So, i questioned him about having a Hero battery in the back. He retrieved one, and put it in..it fired right up again. So he told me he would order me a new battery because i have insurance, and because i was 1,000 miles away from home (Sprint's anti 30 day policy). Got it in, and it was in the small bag that they come in. Opened it up, and there was some like..glue resign on it and now the battery wont last more than 5 hours, compared to when i could get 24 out of the old one, but i couldn't complain because we were leaving the day i got it. Got home and asked sprint about replacing it with the real battery, and they said they can't because its within the 30 days, even though they replaced it once with the wrong battery, and a refurbished one.

Now, that is the full story.

Actually, if i were to go into my sprint store and tell them my phone is having battery life issues, i would get it replaced for free. I have gotten it replaced numerous times on my moment. The insurance covers anything that may be faulty with the devices that it would have caused. Now, if i had caused it then it would be a different story.

TEP does not cover the battery. These stores are replacing your battery as a courtesy. I know this to be true. I also realize that they will typically extend this courtesy however when they don't have pretty red batteries they will give you the less interesting but as effective black battery. That said, if RS sold you the device, they should rectify the situation.

Wait...RS sold you something that doesn't work and Sprint is to blame? ...I guess I just don't understand the entire situation. The Hero battery is the same battery. Sorry if the store gave you a bad one...I wouldn't have handed you one with "crud" all over it...but a "refurbished" one would be more than acceptable because again..it is a courtesy.

How is this sprints fault? I feel your misplacing the blame here.

It's not sprints fault that they replaced my batter that was blown up with a battery that was refurbished?

No, radioshack sold me something that worked, but on the way to florida my battery overheated and died. Sprint store in daytona beach, florida replaced it, but with a refurbished hero battery. I would of raised cane about it then, but that was the day i was leaving..there was no time.

If it is not in the insurance, how come no matter what sprint store i go into (that includes talking to sprint online, or on the phone), i can tell them about my battery problem and i will always get the batter replaced? Seems to be more than a courtesy thing.

I am going to make my whole story more clear..i can see where it is confusing, ha.

Nope its a courtesy. The battery and or charger are only covered if it is due in part or whole to loss/stolen/liquid or physical damage and deductible is paid. Check out your policy

So rs sold you something that worked for a time and then failed? So in other words, rs sold you something that failed to work after some undisclosed time?

It worked until the the charger (sprint!) charged the phone towards 130 degrees.

Still not sprints fault.

1.) They don't manufacture the batteries or chargers. They just sell them. You going to blame best buy if you buy a bad tv made by samsung?

2.) Your insurance contract is provided by assurion, and not sprint. It explicitly states they can provide you with refurbished equipment should they choose to. They could have made you turn your whole phone in if they wanted. You were never promised to get anything (including batteries) new should something fail, so "raising cane" would have been uncalled for and flat out wrong.

Let me clarify a few mistakes in this post.... I work in a service and repair center. The store should not have replaced your battery. The phone should have been exchanged for a new one in the box at any sprint retail store (assuming you bought it from a corporate store/online/telesales since non preferred locations can't even sell it yet). Perhaps a phone call and ticket to be exchanged at a different store.

The battery replacement was not a courtesy. Yes its true that batteries, charters, accessories, etc are not covered under TEP but... the 1 year warranty covers phone + battery and can be exchanged in the same way as a phone is (order a refirb, give to you, mail your battery back).

Who to blame? The store that replaced your battery. They aren't supposed to do that within 30 days unless you are fully aware of voiding the 30 day policy and basically demand it. But even then, we are not supposed to because they log issues with phones, advance exchanging a phone/battery within 30 days bypassed that log.

Hope this helps....

So you do tickets on every battery in your store?

Your manager would have replaced a phone purchased at RS with a new phone from his/her inventory?

I know they don't, im not ******ed. No, i would not blame bestbuy, as i don't do business with them. Get your stores right if you are going to come in here.

I am fine with refurbished equipment, if it works right. What is the point of buying a 200$ phone, and getting it replaced with something that doesn't work? Oh, and i would have no problem returning the whole phone (i am on wait for a new one anyways), but you see the problem where they are out of stock everywhere? Yeah, that'd be hard to do right now.

Believe me, the whole phone is getting replaced on July 5th, when i take it into the sprint store.

They weren't allowed to do it, but he did it because i was 1,000 miles away from home without a communication line.

All in all, i understand i have to wait 30 days, trust me i do. The argument at state here is that they replaced the battery (knowingly doing so that they couldn't), and gave me one that isn't the right battery for it, and it doesn't work half as well. If need be it, i have insurance, and the phone and battery will go back on the 5th that way i can get the right stuff. No, this isn't insurance fraud or anything because the device is defective anyways. The light leakage, and the back battery door are my problems right now.

im gonna guess you had it charging directly in sunlight on this long trip. Complete human error there.....of course the battery is going to get hot, and in your case overheat.

Hell ive seen my EVO plenty of times now start to have a flashing light from getting to hot.....especially when its been 90+ and I have my sunroof open w/ the sun beaming directly onto my charging EVO.

Why do people keep arguing when the resolution is posted to begin with?

OP, the return/repair should have been handled through the same channel from which you purchased the phone. And from what I gather from evilsandwhich, the Daytona store did you a courtesy that they weren't even supposed to do. And now you're pissed at them. Goes to show, no good deed goes unpunished.

You would of guessed wrong, of course. The phone was under the dash, in an air conditioned car.

There was never a flashing light, just the charging one.

It doesn't really matter who its handled by, as it goes back to the same place anyways. If i were to return it to radioshack, i would have to wait weeks to get a new one. If i were to return it to sprint, i would have to wait weeks to get a new one. The batteries, as said before, come with a 1 year manufacture warranty, so no, the store did not do me a courtesy, it did its job, just half heartedly. I am not pissed at the store, i just want the error fixed, huge difference.

Your lack of comprehension of an analogy isn't my fault. Everyone else got it just fine, so that just leaves you. The battery may or may not have malfunctioned. It may have been your car charger, or the cigarette outlet, or the phone itself. Or just plain ol' user error. Who knows, and at least the problem I resolved. I'm postive there are parts of the story we aren't hearing, as forums like this generally get half-truths and full blown lies in leu of what really happened. Well, glad you got it fixed.

But btw, how, exactly, did you know the exact temperature of the phone's battery if you weren't paying attention to it?

Actually, yes it was a courtesy. You should have taken it to a Radio Shack. You can't tell me that there aren't any Radio Shacks in Daytona Beach. It may all end up coming from the same place, but until your 30 days is up, it is Radio Shack's responsibility to provide you with return/repair support, because they get a cut of the $$ for selling you the phone. Radio Shack could have done the same thing that Sprint did for you.

Let's try another analogy for you: You buy a cordless power drill from Home Depot. The drill later overheats and roasts the battery. You go to Lowe's and tell them your story, and they get you a new battery free of charge for your drill (how many of you actually believe that Lowe's would help you with an item you purchased from Home Depot even if they carried the same brand and model?); Now the battery only lasts a few minutes a charge; Is it Lowe's fault?

Secondly, your '5-hour charges' may not even be a problem with the battery. It may be a problem with your phone which you said has already overheated at least once. Overheated electronics have a habit of behaving badly. It's hard to tell, considering you never told us what testing methods you used to confirm that the battery was at fault.

Bottom line, you bought your phone from Radio Shack; your phone overheated; we don't know if it overheated because of negligence on your part, or if it was due to manufacturer defect; You got a new battery to fix the problem from the Sprint Store; battery only lasts 5 hours; need to blame somebody, so you blame Sprint, because they were nice enough to get you a new battery, even though they should have told you to go to Radio Shack. Again, no good deed goes unpunished.
