Desire in the line of fire

On the Galaxy S forum there is a comparison on the 2 handsets here some comments.

Can we have some feedback, I've got my desire and so far I'm happy with it but as I'm with Virgin Mobile i've got 14 days to change my mind .You get 28 in total.

The other pros for the Galaxy S are:
- better sound quality
- better music player, has EQ
- better video capabilities
- better video capture and camera (low light conditions that require a flash aside of course)
- 1.8GB of app installation space
- loudspeaker is orders of magnitude better than the Desire's
- TV Out via cable, DLNA
- better for high quality gaming
- WiFi tether
- better bluetooth implementation (my heart rate monitor wouldn't work with the Desire etc etc)
- significantly better battery life
- supports landscape rotation in both directions
- better apps package with paid licenses for Asphalt, VLingo, Aldiko EBook reader, Layar, Thinkfree Office with editing

Pros for the Desire:
- better UI, especially widgets support
- for me slightly better general speed of operation (opening apps etc, and my Samsung is not on branded firmware, so this is an apples with apples comparison)
- multicolour LED notification light
- hardware keys
- HTC email app better than Samsungs
- better browser with flashlite 4.0 (although I prefer browsing on the Galaxy S because of the larger screen)
- better initial setup (a lot better)

Ive only had my desire since this morning and im pleased with it, it looks very nice. The music player on the desire is fine for my needs, as long as it plays the music its fine, wifi tether again isnt a problem for me. It is the first smart phone ive actually owned so maybe im a bit of a novice.

Have you tried the Galaxy S? It feels extremely tacky and cheap. Samsung are also slow at updating their phones(2.2 and 3.0 will likely come to us first).

The Galaxy S does have it's benefits, such as speed and the Super AMOLED. It just depends on the person I guess... Try out both phones and see which you prefer...

+1, but Paul O'Brien at Modaco has stated it is his new favourite phone. If I were you I would try to have a play with one and see which you prefer.

Samsung. The screen is better, bigger and uses less battery. Also the processor is better, it will play games smoother than the desire.

Basically I prefer the look of the desire, but if i had to pick now i'd get the samsung.

It's clearly a very close call between the two phones. I'm happy with my Desire, the build quality, hardware buttons and slick UI would still swing it towards the Desire for me. But others may find the larger / better screen, front camera and GPU on the Samsung to be more important.

The Samsung is nice and sleek, but the back really does feel very cheap.

Having tried them both, I think both phones are fantastic, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by either one.

Yeah, I tried this Samsung after getting my Desire and it feels so cheap and plasticky that the other benefits just pale into insignificance unfortunately. I love the feel of quality and the weight of the Desire as well as its looks. The only real issue I have with the Desire compared to my Blackberry Bold and Nokia E71 is the speaker... The speaker on the Desire is terrible, but hey, you cant have everything.... Or can you? lol!

I'm willing to stick with my beautiful Desire for now!

I'm kind of in the same position as you, choosing between the two.

Living in Canada, these phones will both be here soon, and these are two of the top Android phones we'll be able to get. I keep switching between which I'll buy.

The Galaxy S has the nicer screen, and apparently the processor is better. But I much prefer the Sense UI, and the over all look of the phone seems a bit better... plus I've heard the build quality on the Desire is better.

I just wish I'd be able to get some hands on experience with one of them... but that'll be a while still.

I tried the samsung galaxy s in a store and I was horrified over how tacky and cheap it felt. I don't care if it has a better GPU, it looks like something that would fall out of a Christmas cracker.

I nearly went for the Samsung, but the lack of camera flash was the deal breaker, I actually think the Desire takes pretty good shots for a phone and I'm used to SE's cybershot range of camera phones. The lack of flash, LED or otherwise, is ridiculous.

The UI on the Samsung didn't do it for me either and really, when you boil it down, that's the bit of the phone you're using the most, regardless of all the freebies the phone might give you.

It's an entirely personal thing, the Samsung is an Android phone and I'm all for Android phones; it's the only OS that's going to give Apple a kick so the more manufacturers support it the better - I hope one day all non Apple phones will be on Android.

I just bought a Desire after considering the Galaxy S. After reading the early reviews I decided against the Galaxy on the following points.

looks like a cheap Iphone knock off (and not even the latest model!)
No camera flash
no track ball
Don't trust Samsung when it comes to updates. HTC have really dragged their heals with the hero update to 2.1 but Samsung Promised 2.1 to behold owners before purchase and have reneged and that is orders of magnitude worse.

Here's MHO.

I had a Samsung Omnia2 until last month, when I bought a Desire (just wanna try a new OS).

Overall, I consider the Omnia2 an excellent WM phone, zippy (not considering the terrible laggy Samsung Widgets stock interface, any other interfaces such as SPB MS were fine) and powerful. But comparing to Desire... it really looks like a cheap gadget, almost like a toy. Too much plastic, I guess.

All reviews I read about the Galaxy S say the same. It's a powerhouse on the inside, but looks like a toy on the outside. I guess Samsung has to make their high-end phones also look high-end.
