Should I root?

If you're confident you can complete the rooting process and like tweaking things in your phone, do it. You can get ROMs that are basically stock with some superuser powers.

JUST REMEMBER THAT ROOTING VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY.

You can overclock to increase cpu performance or underclock to increase battery performance, or utilize both.
You can tether your phone to your computer for anywhere (with a data signal) laptop access to the internet.
You can customize just about anything
You can adjust how android handles its internal processes
You can use ROMs that don't use sense or just use the social networking aspects of sense
You can get live wallpapers
You can use JIT (what makes 2.2 so much faster than 2.1), although JIT is pretty fenicky (sp?) with some apps that utilize the data network for streaming, such as pandora

You can always unroot if you don't like all that root has to offer, or if you encounter a bug and need a stock phone to return to the big V.

And that list just scratches the surface. I for one love messing around with my phone, and the performance benefits have made my phone much more usable (less lag mostly the issue, especially with the dialer).

The massive lag with my dialer is one of my big problems with my Eris right now. I really like the idea of tweaking things and being able to adjust performance. Part of me is affraid I'll mess something up when trying to root.

The rooting process should be taken one step at a time after a bit of reading.. especially reading of the steps themselves at:

http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html

It's the same process for 1.5 as 2.1, as long as you have the right bootloader.

We're here to help you along; these forums are full of very knowledgeable folks, many who've rooted.

Take it slowly.. have fun. :)

Aww I can't root and it's just not fair dammit!

Finicky computer won't cut a guy some slack and just do what it's told.

Oh well, not the end of the world... my New Every Two should be comin' around by the time 3.0 is out... complete with 4G LTE service and 2 Ghz phones. Oh god, does someone have a tissue???

So does rooting, in and of itself, cause the dialer to be less laggy? How so? Or is it the result of some other process/function associated with rooting?

Thanks.

Well, you get less lagginess overall when rooted if your phone is overclocked (and most of the custom ROMs out there allow you to do so).

I'm using Ivan's Eris Official ROM and I actually didn't have it overclocked for several weeks :) and was very happy with its performance. Turning on overclocking (please "drive" safely when overclocking, btw) just made it a smidge snappier. :D

You also usually get more from memory for your apps, usually at least 140MB to start with instead of around 100MB w/stock 2.1.

Also, read and research to see which ROMs might be right for you. There's lots of of threads that discuss the merits of the various ROMs out there and there should be one that meets most of your needs.

Not sure if every rooter can say this... but my dialer lag is a thing of that past.
