Teathering a Hero

I am trying to go wireless and get rid of my DSL I have tried US Cellular teathered, abismally slow.

I tried Verizon, fast enough, very expensive for what you get.

Now I am trying Sprint with a Hero and a Samsung Moment to use as phones etc, plus teather to our lap top and desk top to use as a modem. The Sprint store personel tell me that it can be done, just not something that Sprint will tell me how to do.

One of the young ladies tell me that there is an AP that I can down load to do it. She uses her Hero as a modem all the time.

What would I need to do?

Pdanet will allow you to tether if you aren't rooted (sounds like you aren't).

If you do root (get admin access to you phone) you can tether through other methods.

Kelmar, Thank you for your reply. I have not recived the phone yet. I will admit that I have not a clue to understand what you are talking about. Maybe I am pre mature. I was told by the young lady in the sprint office that there was an AP? that I could down load to the phone that would allow it to operate as a modem when needed.

I read the FAQs at the top of the page about Roots (ing) after that I am just as in the dark as I was before I read it. Guess I will just have to wait till the phone comes on Monday.

Once you get the phone, just go to Android market and download the Pdanet app. This will allow you to use tethering, it does cost like 5 bucks though but hey, beats paying your isp if it works lol.

I use Easy Tether Lite. It's free. Works great.

There is a free version of PDAnet, only downside is while tetherd you cannot access any (https) "secure" sites, but its a good way to test out the app and see if its worth the money. i know on verizon's moto droid i was getting 3.5 mbps and had no probs. we'll see what i get now that ive switched to Sprints hero.
