Ahh dialer lag

So I was trying to call my bro. I hit the button to call him, waited 3 or 4 seconds, hit it again, waited again, hit it again, waited again, kept hitting it. Finally it called him, but by this time the phone had queued up several call commands. So after being on the phone with my bro for about 5 seconds it called his number again which placed the original call on hold, so then I got his voicemail. After figuring out what happened, I tried switching back to the original call, but the phone would not respond so I just jammed on the "hang up" button. Finally it hung up both calls. At this point I was furious. But it wasn't over. The phone decided to call my bro one more time. I just hung up. All this took place over about a minute or so of my phone being mostly chaotic. I nearly chucked the phone against the wall. BTW, this kind of crap only happens when there is a very weak signal, which just happens to be at my house. At work, where the signal is strong, the phone is relatively responsive....for an Eris. Because of the contrast of signal strength between these two places I have come to learn that the weaker the signal, the crappier the experience of using the Eris is. I enjoy the Eris most of the time, but I CANNOT wait to get a new fast phone.

while I can understand your frustration........ and there are many complaints about lag on the eris.......... unfortunately you already have the answer to your problem........

getting a "new fast" phone isnt going to solve your crappy signal at home........ and youre still going to get some dialer lag because of the way android handles the process of placing a call

one of the first steps it takes is to check the signal to make sure placing a call is possible....... if you have a crappy signal then its going to keep checking for a solid signal and hesitate on dialing............ it cant put the call through if it cant reach the network

so while youre sitting there getting impatient, its simply doing what its programmed to do....... and by the time it finds a good signal in your crappy signal world, youve hit the call button 20 times........ now it is going to continue to do what its programmed to do..... respond to your keypresses

I have same problem with my daughter when the internet is slow for her on the PC......... she wants to move that mouse around and keep clicking things thinking that will speed it up.........

actually youre creating a bigger problem out of it by continuing to press the button

Normally I would agree with you (I write embedded software for a living), but this is my 4th phone since moving into our house and none of them did this. No matter the signal strength at our house, the phone should NEVER hesitate to make a decision. That only leads to frustrating and annoying the user. And I never said the signal was not there, just weak. I don't care if the phone is doing "what's its been programmed to do". I say "what it's been programmed to do" is stupid and unacceptable. The dialer should be given top priority by the OS and never hesitate.

For one thing it should NEVER queue up multiple call commands while trying to process the first one. That is HORRIBLE software design.

back to serious now......... I wont disagree with you that the programming is stupid....... however......

if you develop software for a living then you already know that EVERY operating system ever written will queue multiple instances if you keep telling it to

you could always do what everyone else that has experienced dialer lag does.......... first clear out all your caches and histories etc (call history for example puts major lag on the dialer)............ then if that doesnt help you can d/l an alternate dialer from the market......... I think alot of people prefer the alternate dialers just for the sake of likeing them better anyhow

Not embedded firmware and ESPECIALLY not the embedded firmware I write. The system I recently designed consisted of a ruggedized 7" screen with 5 hard buttons. The idiot who wrote the original software for it did just what the Eris does. It queued up button presses, which led to erratic and unwanted behavior. The first thing my team when we got a hold of it was lock out the queue after a single button press, and clear the queue entirely after navigating to a new "screen". This fixed MANY issues and made the system much mote stable.

Perhaps we, as users, should stop accepting crappy behavior from our phones just because "that's the way it's always been". And a faster phone WOULD fix many problems. Not because the problems would go away, but because a faster phone would make decisions faster and process requests faster, and if that's the best solution I can get right now, ill take it.

Im an engineer and I simply can't accept crappy desing just because "thats the way it is". It's my job to fix these types of issues, or design to prevent them in the first place.

Err, it making several phone calls isn't really normal at all. Mine will halt all input until the call starts. As soon as you press call, the entire phone freezes for a second and starts the call.

I wasn't pressing the green CALL hard or soft button. I was pressing the contact card button in the contact list in the phone app. My bro just happened to be the last person I called so he was at the top.

Just tried a test and the green soft Call button acts just as stupid. I dial a number and press call. In the 5 or 6 seconds it takes to make the call I can press all sorts of buttons, typing in extra numbers, going back to the home screen, etc. I even had it make the call twice, just like it did earlier, without me touching anything. It definitely queued up multiple call commands.

+1 on the crappy dialer. I have tried other dialers, but it seems that even they have problems because stupid sense insists on handling everything. I am thinking root might solve that problem, but even that I am not completely sure of.

Not saying this will solve your problems, but before I rooted I was using Dialer One. You can find it in the market.

It seemed to help. It seemed to not freeze up when making calls... at least not as much.

I can confirm that it fixed it for me.
Roms may vary with this issue.

I'm not sure. Mine is completely stock and I don't have any dialer lag. I also don't do anything special either like clearing cache or anything. I just use my phone the same way I normally do.

Wow! You are absolutely right!!! Why did I never think of that?

I tried what you said and my dialer woke up and is reallllly fast and snappy!

Although I leave my 3g on all the time, at least it helps me narrow down the problem!!

i have a question:
when i press the phone button, i get the virtual keypad and a long list behind it.
i has a few last call log numbers but it also contain Facebook phonebook and other phone numbers i usually don't use.
how can i disable this list?
