What makes Mytouch slide "midrange"?!

I read a review of the new Mytouch Slide on CNet and it was touted as being a "mid-range" android phone. For the life of me I can't figure out what is so mid-range about it. I picked it a few days ago and have been more than impressed. It has every single function my friend's Iphones have and MORE. I can give it voice commands, it will read my texts to me, it has swype which makes texting a breeze, it has google maps/voice navigation... I could go on and on. I actually just brought it home for a 30 day trial and fully planned to take it back and buy an Iphone. That's not happening!! I have been playing Nintendo games (thanks nesoid), my brother can't do that with his Iphone... KWIM? Forget comparing it to the Iphone for a minute though, and come someone explain to me why the Droid Incredible is so much better? Or the Nexus One? I'm really curious. I am not a techie so probably the differences in them will not be big deals for me. But I'd still love to know why they are considered better.
Thanks!
Robin

Mostly the processor and the screen. The high end phones are running 1 Ghz processors with 480 x 800 resolution where the Slide only has a 600 Mhz processor and 320 x 480 resolution. The high end phones also have live wallpapers with some of them having front facing cameras, HDMI ports, AMOLED screens, and 720p resolution video recording. As a mid-range phone, however, the Slide is very good for all it packs.

What is a front facing camera and what makes it better (is it the ability to see yourself on camera in the screen)? I am surprised about the resolution (maybe my eyes are bad LOL) b/c it looks every bit as crisp as the IPhones I've played with. What does a bigger processor do for you?

A front facing camera is used for video calling. A bigger processor will result in faster performance and the ability to use things like live wallpapers and other CPU intensive applications. To my knowledge right now there are no applications that truly push the CPU to the limit, but high speed processors are better at multitasking which is one of Android's best features.

Thanks for your help! The phone is already lightening fast and I switch back and forth constantly b/t apps! I think that is actually my #1 reason for deciding to keep the phone instead of going to the Iphone. I can't imagine not doing 20 things at once! (Ok, more like 3 or 4 LOL)

I truly think if more people give this a try they'll be happier with it than the Iphone. I was deadset against anything other than the Iphone mainly because I am a college student (albeit old and non-traditional) and EVERYONE around me has it and is always playing with it and selling me on it. I am constantly inundated with how amazing it is. I never would have guessed there was anything else just as amazing and actually better.

That's because up until the iPhone 4G, all iPhones used a 320 x 480 screen like your mytouch. But, one year ago, the HTC Hero was top of the line for Android, which isn't too far off from a mytouch. It's by no means a bad phone, but it is definately a mid-range one. And for some people that's all they need.

I'm curious, what kind of people need a phone on the higher end of the scale? I'm guessing you mean serious gamers? (I'm not LOL)

I don't buy a phone for games, I buy it to be productive, and maybe have a little fun.

Call me crazy or stupid, but I am a casual gamer, casual social networking, casual heavy us user... but still.. I just want the best thing available at the time.. I guess is a nerd geek thing?

Oh and about the mid range thing... I guess all android phones are high end software wise.. because they have android in them, and we all know android is awesome ... but hardware wise, lets face it, some phones have better specs than others... but not every body need a high end phone.. my 2 cents

Nope, not crazy!! I don't need a high end phone. But I do WANT the best available :) I don't NEED to watch movies on my phone. And I probably never will. But having HD? That would be cool! LOL. The mytouch slide is not cheap. It is $400 off contract. I don't want to pay that much if it isn't going to be the best phone for me. I think that's the difference though. Since I realized this was considered mid-range I've been doing all kinds of research on the "better" phones trying to see if I should return the slide (I'm still within my 30 days) and get something else. I'm not sold on anything else yet though. This phone has a few qualities that make it great for me and therefor more valuable than a larger screen or faster processor. I was intrigued by the HTC EVO though until I read how many problems people were having with it. And I don't think I'd be happy with that large of a phone either. I don't like having bulky pockets and I wouldn't want to throw my $$$ phone in my heavy backpack or in my cluttered purse where it is likely to get crushed.

Its not really about "needing" the high end device, some people just prefer them.

Bottom line is, you should choose the phone that is right for you, if the phone you have does everything you want from a phone, then thats all you need. For some people, a high end device is just overkill, and they'll never use half the features that come along with them. Some people like to try to keep up with the current technology, which is fine if thats you're thing, but that can get costly as these phones are not cheap and they're producing mid-high end devices at a lightening fast rate.

In that case.. why not just get the nexus one.. its got the 1ghz processor and a not so large screen and u can get it off contract for just 100 dls more.. and you get software updates before any body else

Robinelli,

I'm with you...I checked-out a few phones and I bought the Mytouch slide. I'm not too tech-savvy. This was my first smart-phone and it is easy to use.

I'm what I consider a "moderate needs" user. The mytouch slide covers all the bases.

I think that the "higher-end" phones are for people that actually need all the extra goodies or just want to feel good knowing they have the "cutting edge".

Um, if you want to see why it's "mid range" you need to compare it (features and specs) to the range of devices. ;)

Midrange doesn't mean that it doesn't meet the needs of people. Even low end doesn't mean that.

well for me i was lookign into smart phones, and im not a fan of buying a new item every few months to a year to stay good. i like to buy one really good item then sit on it till a nother item atleast twice as good comes out without my phone falling into the totalyl obsolete or low end range. the ensures that i continue to get support, liek updates, compatibility with anythign that comes out, and a phone that doesnt become a money sink for upgrading.

i bought my N1 for that reason almost a year back, it cost me alot of cash, but only a couple hundred more then a phone that would now be concidered low-end, compared to my still high end phone. in this respect i save money because i dont have to buy a second phone to keep in the green. i also wanted a high end phone because its exspencive for any of the phone in my book and i might as well get the best, and when i bought my N1 it was the best, and arguably it still is one of the best. ill keep this baby until i get a full touch screen 2ghtz proc, or if google ever releases a N2 or if a duel core comes out. until then i dont see my N1 falling behind.
