Evo vs. iPhone: photos & videos

From those comparisons id have to say its a very close comparison, evo looks better some times, iphone looks better others. Iphone destroys evo in night time video though, no denying that. Its really a toss up to me after this.

When i tested my Evo vs iphone in apple store the iphone blew me away, given the lighting conditions. . So i proceeded to snap pics of my evo doing things the iphone cant do and set it as the wallpaper on a few iphones in the store out of pure spite lol

on a related note, i tested the speakerphone and mic of both over call to my cousin who has an iphone 4 and he said the Evo did WAAAAAY better on canceling out the background noise in the store. And on my side the Evo was actually loud enough to hear him without putting my ear to the speakerphone, unlike the iphone.

I love the competition. Its gotten a lot stiffer (TWSS)

I don't like iPhone unreliable phone, smaller screen, AT&T capped data plan, no wifi tethering, no video chat over cell network, no adobe flash support, etc etc etc. Don't want to rely on jailbreak for access to features that apple prohibits.

So no matter how good iPhone display is or whatever above are deal breakers for me. I have iPad for apps I can't get on Android.

The biggest thing for me is the screen size.....after using a EVO for a month Iphone seems like a kids phone & I would not want to use it besides make call.

EVO is ****ing beast **** how the display looks in Iphone who gives a **** when you can watch in HD on a big screen it kicks the shit out of that crap.

Picture quality is pretty close, but the video on the Evo is horrible all by itself... compare it to the iPhone 4 and it makes it look even worse. HTC goes for a spec list to try to sell phones as every cheap ass netbook/laptop/generic PC maker does and then when tested looks like $h#t... nothing new. The fanboys will scream otherwise but Apple doesn't need a 8mp camera to put quality (non compressed to hell) 720p video on a smartphone. I had hoped the Evo's video recording would be much better, but for what ever reason the highly compressed video looks worse than VGA quality on cheap cell phones. I won't even talk about the sound/mic quality...

If this is the best HTC can do, the Evo will be my last HTC branded phone. Hopefully another manufacturer steps up it's game to bring a well built, quality Android smartphone to market.

I use HD camcorder for videos and cam for pics. Don't care about how good pics and videos are on any phone as they won't replace dedicated devices anytime soon.

To me Evo is phone and Internet access first then the rest. What's the point of iPhone taking good pics and videos if calls drop and AT&T network sucks. If it's not a good phone the rest of the features are pointless.

Try to use Facetime on iPhone 4 to make video calls over 3G network or to any phone but iPhone 4. Oh you can't...

Try connecting iPhone 4 via HDMI to HDTV...oh you can't no HDMI

Try accessing Adobe Flash sites to watch movies or play games? Oh you never could or be able to.

Try watching High Quality youtube videos on iPhone 4 on the 3G network...Oh you can't do that either.

Whatever iDont Evo Does.

Why not? Whether we like it or not, the iphone is the "mainstream phone". It is the phone everyone who is brainwashed flocks to. Iphoners believe that apples the innovator and the best there is. Its the way it is. So every phone that comes out is compared to it. We all know they are just ignorant :D haha

But yeah, EVO>IPHONE photos, IPHONE>EVO videos (this can be fixed if we can manage to change the video compression I believe though)

thats just your personal preference though. I dont know about you but if i can have professional looking photos on my phone then why not. Its like saying a honda is better than Mercedes because you "dont need the luxury". so what, theres plenty of people that WANt the best All in one device possible, if you dont then be happy and keep it moving, the rest of us are on a mission

I would've loved to get a better quality image sensor for the Evo. It's a good thing I didn't get this phone for pictures alone. And if I'm going for image quality, even the i4 won't cut it. I have to concede. There are thing that the iphone 4 can do better. Yes it has slightly better camera, yes it's a lot better camcorder. But the evo can do that too, now there are things that the iphone can't do. Let me list it.
1. Iphone does not have navigation capabilities, you need to download an app for it.
2. Iphone does not have built in TV capabilities.
3. Iphone does not have flash capabilities.
4. The iphone does not have wifi hotspot capability.

I'm sure the iphone can do a few things better than the Evo. But it can at least do it. There are things that thee iphone can't do unless you download apps and probably pay for such capabilities, where as the evo already has it. With that in mind, I'll sacrifice a little quality to the iphone. But at least I get more functionality with my phone.

Sent using my HTC Evo 4G.

Just to play devil's advocate...
1. No it doesn't come with a preinstalled native app, but within a min you can download Motion X nav for free and it works just fine.

2. People actually watch Sprint TV? I find Slingbox to be my choice for streaming live TV when on the go. My entire DVR library, 200+ channels with full pause, play, rewind etc... Android finally has this app, would uninstall Sprint TV if possible.

3. No phone yet to date has "real" flash, I'll reserve final judgement when 10.1 shows up.

4. iPhone has wifi tethering via jailbreak just as probably 99% of those people on this forum are using wifi tethering by way of rooting vs paying for it anyhow. Kind of a moot point. Sadly ATT's 3G can keep up with Sprints 4G speed wise in places such as Kansas City. I realize in heavy population centers that's not always the case but both phones have tethering.

While I do find better overall coverage on Sprint, the networks have far larger gaps to make a difference than the phones IMO. Just my 2 cents anyhow.

oh man....I don't mind the video quality in the evo (though the iPhone is a LOT betterin that department, no doubt) but damn...the sound quality is horrible LMAO sounds like shit. Still love my evo but damn, it really sounds like shit <3

I agree 100%. the sound is a much bigger annoyance than the compressed video. Nit only does the video mic sound bad but my voice mails sound as if the are coming from a tin can, some to the point of not being able to understand the person.

Just to play devil's advocate to your devil's advocate :) ...
It's actually 99 cents, and if you want turn-by-turn voice directions, it's a $25 a year package. Also, you don't get text-to-speech, which is fine if you've never had it, but you do miss it when you no longer have it.

Though for $25 a year, it's not a bad deal compared to the cost of a non-TTS standalone GPS. But you can't beat having not one, but *two* free options for TTS voice-guided nav on the Evo. I like Google Nav better, but I prefer the TTS on Sprint's version, and also like that the Sprint version doesn't mute your music when giving directions.

Works just fine, is good. Sort of like the quality of Evo's Camera and camcorder. Evo's navigation is clearly superior to x nav. :)

Actually if you want a very good Navigation app for the iPhone which I think would be better than what's available for the evo for free, I would suggest the Tomtom app for apple. :) It has advance lane guidance as well as IQ routes. Once Tomtom get this app available for Android, I'll surely be getting it.

2. People actually watch Sprint TV? I find Slingbox to be my choice for streaming live TV when on the go. My entire DVR library, 200+ channels with full pause, play, rewind etc... Android finally has this app, would uninstall Sprint TV if possible.

Slingbox you need to hardware for how much? Not everyone has a slingbox at home. :) While Sprint TV is already available on the phone. And depending on your bandwidth, quality does varies. I was actually impressed while waiting for my flight in Newark Int'l Airport (NJ) when watching the World Cup. Here in Houston, the quality isn't so impressive though. At least everyone with an Evo does not need to spend any more to enjoy this capability. :)

3. No phone yet to date has "real" flash, I'll reserve final judgement when 10.1 shows up.

At least i can visit more sites than someone on an iphone and watch flash videos as well. :)

Fair enough, but it looks like it's a moot point since Apple's main selling point is it's simplicity. The majority of the people won't even try jailbreaking the iPhone. On the other hand for the evo, it is already capable of wifi tethering (hotspot) for as much as 8 devices. :)

While I do find better overall coverage on Sprint, the networks have far larger gaps to make a difference than the phones IMO. Just my 2 cents anyhow.

Never noticed any gaps, from here in SW Houston, Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York. Not sure what gaps you're talking about.

Overall, I like your replies, and you do have some valid points. Don't get me wrong, I live with someone who has an iPhone 4 and for what it does better than the Evo. Both phones have a slight advantage over the other at one thing or the other, and both phones have something that the other doesn't have..... So gentlemen, choose your phone. :D

The bottom line for me is this -- the Evo does pretty everything I've ever wanted a phone to do, it's like it all converged into this great (but flawed) device, and I love it. The iPhone 4 is a great phone for different reasons (and also flawed), but it's on AT&T, and I'm with Sprint, and my best option on Sprint (which I prefer) is the Evo. I personally don't give two poos which phone is better, but I do enjoy seeing people argue about it :)
