Root Don't Flame Me....

I'm sure most of this has been asked at one point or another. Please bear with me. I just came from the Eris to the Droid; I have rooted 3 Eris' with no problems. After getting this phone, alot of the things I rooted for in the past are included in the Droid by default. I'd still like to root, but considering the differences, here are my questions:
I am after root privilages but want to keep everything pretty much the same; i.e., no custom ROMs. I am interested in overclocking and a couple other things like cache cleaner and ad free. With the Eris ROMs, there was always one thing that didn't work, (MMS, NAV). I just don't want those problems anymore.
If I root, is there a clear path to un-root?
I have read many sites, most outline different methods for rooting; I have to admit that the Eris was a little more cut-and-dry. Can anyone point me in the direction of the best and easiest way to root 2.1 update 1?
With 2.2 right around the corner, I'd like to give it a shot; I know that there are 2.2 ROMs out there (I was running it on the Eris), I just don't want to miss out on anything good
Any help you guys could give would be great; like I said I'm sure this has all been ansered but with dated material and the like it's hard to distinguish which is the way to go.

And then changing your subject
ROM Manager also has the 2.1 rooted image to download once you are rooted, if you do 2.01 that is.

I came from the Eris a couple of weeks back myself, so I can clarify a couple of things...

1) RSD Lite can be a friggin pain. When you launch it on one computer and it doesn't get the job done, don't waste any time trying to figure out why....just move to a different computer! I spent many, many, many, many, many HOURS trying to get that crap to work on one laptop and got it 1st time on my desktop with same OS build, etc... essentially, it will either work or it won't!

2) Once you root using ASD...the temptation to play with your phone will almost kill you! Why I was laying in bed sound asleep on day 2 after rooting my Moto and my phone kept whispering to me all night "Rom me...Rom me...Rom me..." until I woke up and had to comply. I swear Moto is in cahoots with the producers of "The Shining" or something!

3) The Moto world is far easier and better than the HTC world hands down. Once you get the hang of a few differences....you'll be glad you jumped!

I appreciate all the answers, I know repeated questions can become a pain. megah1tz, I've just been a little leary about the whole process because it's so different from the all-in-one script I used the last time I rooted the Eris. (I've rooted three with three different methods with no problems). THe other thing is, being the differences involved, I do'nt think I'm ready to deal with ROMs that have broken pieces pretty much like all of the Eris one's I tried. Nothing against those devs, they do great work. Even Ivan's I started having MMS problems with. Have you noticed the same thing over here or are there some truly bugless ROMs available? Thanks again.

There are alot of ROms which are stable and have some bugs or none. I am currently on BB v.4 and I had nothing but good experience with it. Until now, I regret for not rooting from day one when I used to have echo on my phone witn 2.0. I had to suffer until verizon released the update. as far im concerned Im happy with the developers and they have done a great job serving the comunity. In addition, there are great people on this forum who are there for you when you need tech suppport...

I couldnt agree more ... infact I wont let VZW touch my phone or have anything to do with the software it runs. Once rooted you will understand.

Well, now that I'm convinced, is there a consensus that the instructions in the sticky are current for 2.1u1?
Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a completely working ROM? Preferably with an oc kernel...
Oh, and is there a way to type more than one number on these keyboards without always pushing alt? Thanks.

I would start with Bugless V.4. it comes with a 800mhz and try to let the script handle the kernel. All u have to do is download the zip file to ur sd card and instal clockwork. Flash the file through clock work and make sure u do a back up and wipe data.

hit alt twice before typing and it locks it in numerical mode. Hit alt again to cancel numerical mode.

Bugless Beast 0.4 is truly a wonder. OC'd to 800MHz and everything works. Smoothest my phone has ever been and the battery life is amazing! Can't recommend it highly enough.
