Hello again,
Just updated google maps via the market place to version 4.3 and i admit the answer is no doubt staring me in the face but on a earlier version of the said "app" you had the option to use street view while navigating. My question is "where is it gone" as for some reason when i now try to navigate to a destination that option is missing. Any ideas on this? Thanks in advance.

I can't find it either you can turn on satellite layers but you used to be able to double tap in navigation and dtreetview would come up :(

Thanks but that method only works in "normal" not navigation mode, as I have said it was there on earlier versions but not this one! Pity (just a thought I wonder if it was to data intensive as it had to render a new photo image every few yards/meters)

Didn't it only show street view images for junctions? And only when requested. Shouldnt have been that data intensive. Anyway, i would rather features like multiple destinations/manual choose which roads like you can on regular Google maps.

I thought this too, I am almost certain Nav has never used streetview constantly. I think it would be unlikely that 3G would be able to keep up with the data requirement.

Thank god someone else finally asked this question. I thought I was going crazy. I spent almost two hours at Verizon with one of their techs, who tried valiantly to get the streetview to work. I thought perhaps it was something about the phone that was causing it. The tech wanted me to reset the phone to factory setttings because she felt I may have downloaded a virus from the open marketplace of Android. I doubted that, of course and now I see that it is obviously a Google problem and not my HTC Incredible. I was wondering when someone other than me was going to ask about this loss of street view.

All that happens now, when you zoom in by tapping on the border at top of the screen, where the street name is shown, is that you get an icon for the list of directions. The "street view" icon used to be above the "directions" icon. Both icons were on the lower right. Not any more. Also, instead of being able to zoom in by double-tapping the screen, there is instead a zoom in/out icon on the lower right.

Yup, me too. Loved the feature, now it's gone. Hard to imagine it's just a bug because it would be a pretty glaring one - but I hope it is because I really liked the feature. Even though it only displays the next 'transition' it is a cool feature and I want it back.

The other thing that's disappointing is that with the old versoin was that when NOT using street view you could navigate using the normal google maps view. Now the only available view (other than satellite layer) is to navigate in 3D, and I find it harder to see the full route that way. It's possible to zoom way out (though no longer by pinching - ANOTHER new omission by the way) but it still doesn't produce as usable a view as a standard map viewed from above.

One thing I'll point out is that in my HTC Incredible there continue to be 3 versions of the navigator software on my phone - (1) a standalone app with a blue chevron icon, (2) from within google maps, and (3) from within "Car Panel". The navigator is actually the same, but the input screens are different. The interesting thing is that before this latest update the navigator within google maps looked a bit different - and had the street view mode - and now it looks pretty much the way the stand-alone app with the blue chevron used to look. It's as if they simply replaced the 'other' versions of the software with that one.

....Streetview was helpful, because it could show you the turn BEFORE you got to it, if you clicked on a direction in the turn-by-turn direction list. You then clicked on the banner at the top of the nav screen to see the turn in advance. Helpful in unfamiliar locales.

Not the end of the world to not have it, but it was a nice feature.

Too bad it's GONE now, and Google has said ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about it.

Ifind it selectively useful at some intersections. However it was there and now it is not, nor are other key features so the question is, why?

The question has been asked
Google's street-view icon is no longer appearing when I double-tap the screen during the turn-by-turn navigation. - Google Mobile Help

Their Initial response

The Google Maps problem you reported has been escalated to the appropriate team. We don't have an immediate fix but are working hard for a resolution.

Problem ID: 65DC-CC2E-2128-9E07

Your report: No street view icon on lower right of map when doing turn by turn navigation. By tapping the top of the screen where the street name was, a street view icon would appear at lower right. NOW THE ONLY ICON THAT APPEARS IS THE DIRECTIONS LIST ICON.

Just an Update From Thom(Google Employee):

Hi Android Maps enthusiasts,

As some of you may have noticed in other threads, Google Maps for Android has been giving a "Data connection lost, retrying" error message to some users even if their phone's data connection is working properly and/or they're able to use other apps.

The Google Maps for mobile engineering team has informed me that the error's caused by a Street View bug, and they're hard at work tweaking our servers to resolve the issue. If the issue hasn't gone away or improved for your phone already, it's expected that it should be backing to working order shortly. Thanks to your feedback in this forum, we were able to move rapidly to diagnose this issue.

My sincerest apologies for any frustration this issue's caused in your Google Maps for Android experience - as a frequent user myself, I can certainly empathize. It's my hope that you all continue to keep bringing your Google Maps issues and great discussions about the app to this forum.

Cheers,
Mobile Guide Tom

Update:
Hi all,

I wanted to provide an update. As some more of you have noticed, Street View isn't working correctly or isn't accessible using Google Maps on your Android phones. We've narrowed down the problem and are working to address it, but please know we're aware of this issue and are hoping to get it fixed as soon as possible. Again, thank you for your patience in the meantime.

Best,
Tom
