What would I be giving up by switching from Inc to X?

I was one of those who ordered an Incredible and had to wait about 3 1/2 weeks for the phone to arrive. During that time, the X got announced. I tried to cancel the order, but according to the reps it was undoable .

Anyway. The phone has come in and I have been playing with it for the past few days. I am coming over from a BB Tour, so this thing is awesome to me. But I have nothing android to compare it to.

My thoughts for getting the X are mainly for the increased real estate. I love to surf the web on my phone and so to me bigger is better. I am a female, but I have decent sized hands so I don't *think* it will be a problem. I plan on trying to find a dummy phone or a demo before launch day to try it out, but I realize that 5 minutes with the phone won't necessarily tell the whole story. I have played with an EVO and I was IN LOVE with its size, so I am thinking the X will feel similar.

What features, other than the UI of course, would I be sacrificing by switching to the X? Historically, does Motorolla have a better reputation for quality and service than HTC?

I really like the Incredible, but the lure of the size is too much for me to resist. I also have a BIG problem with the placement of the volume rocker on the Inc. I keep accidentally turning the ringer volume down when I got to wake up the phone. I missed a pretty important call this weekend because of it. I've had some iffy call quality, but I don't know if that had more to do with reception of the OTHER person or not. But overall... REALLY big improvement from the BB.

I would appreciate some input. I have til Aug 2 to decide. Of course... I've planned to be off the morning of the 15th ;)

Thanks guys

Personally, I feel like Motorola has better quality and support compared to HTC. HTC comes out with more phones and that means less time to design and test them and likely that they will not be supported for as long a period. This may not be a huge deal as a lot people are on to another phone in a year or so but it is still nice.

IMO there aren't many reasons to go with the Inc over the X. The X has better hardware overall and a larger screen with 24-bit color. Also from the reviews, X has better call quality and better battery life.

Still it all comes down to personal preference and it would be a good idea to check out the X in stores when it comes out.

For better or worse the Inc has htc sense; and amoled screen (you can read up on how it differs from tfc); last but least a bit on size. From what I've read the inc has not been the best phone in the world; I did use an evo for a week (friends' from google i/o show) and it was very nice (excellent reception/tranmission on phone calls; and nice screen) but the batter on it sucked (i hear the inc is as bad and hte droid is a bit better).

Anyways there are a lot of options now Inc, Droid x, Evo, Galaxy S, Iphone 4; They all offer trade offs (screen, gpu, battery life, cpu, vendor apps you can't remove, size, call quality, quality in camera, quality in speaker, quality in clarity, ...). In some ways they are all brilliant and in others they are all lemons.

Oh yea which is best for you? How the freak do I know what is best for you. For me I'm leaning towards the Droid X wth the vibrant or evo as backup if the Droid X doesn't work out (bing killed the fascinate as an option)

Features you give up going from the Inc to the X:

Before I begin, let me say that I returned my Incredible and am waiting for either the X or the Samsung Fascinate.

1) You give up not being able to see the screen in the sunlight. ;)
2) You give up the smaller screen
3) You give up not having and HDMI output
4) You give up not getting Android 2.2 in August.
5) You give up not having DLNA (DIGITAL LIVING NETWORK ALLIANCE)
6) You give up not having great the great call quality that the reviewers of the X have been raving about.
7) You give up not having the amazing variety of accessories that are initially offered with the X that aren't offered with the Inc.

That's all I got for now. Sounds like you should stay with the Incredible! ;) Still. I loved the Incredible and it's a great phone. You can't lose either way!

Well, I may be mistaken, but I feel, drpotter2807, that you already know that in your heart you want the Droid X. However you just need a little encouragement from your fellows to help complete the process between decision and action! Well, I am completely in agreeance with how wonderful the screen size is and being a big web surfer as yourself, that was a huge selling point for me. Just wanted to end with a gentle nudge to follow with what you already know you'd like to do! :)

Exactly which hardware components are better? I have had the Inc since its D-day and I also contemplated getting the X as I heard it was supposed to be "better". The only thing that ive seen as better on the X over the Inc is the size, which I think is a touch too big and the display capabilities. While it does have a better battery life due to it being bigger than the Inc's smaller 1300mha battery, I simply bought the 1500mha HTC battery to solve this problem. Also for me, an absolute must is Swype. Very cool that the X comes with it but you can download it to any phone for free. Also,Motoblur is not as refined or good as HTC Sense but thats not a huge issue. So needless to say i'll be sticking with my Inc until a 2ghz Android phone finally emerges...

Hahhaha! This is what I was looking for! ;)

And yes... to Mythnyr, I guess I do need that nudge.

I have never owned a Motorolla phone. My impression of them (not sure WHERE that impression comes from) is that they were pretty solidly built. However, on the Inc boards, they are getting bashed... probably biased I know.. but I was wanting to try to get impartial judgement... which is probably impossible to do on a msg board eh?

And yes... I KNOW NOONE knows what phone would be better for me.... but me. I just wanting to know if there were any subtle features that I might have missed (not the obvious ones) that I would be giving up by ditching the Inc.

Thanks guys.

The hardware differences between the 2 phones that the X has over the Inc:

The battery life doesnt just have to do with the Inc having a smaller stock battery. Reason I say that is the EVO and X are big phones that have almost identical stock battery sizes. Based on reviews, the X has better battery life than the EVO. The difference is 45nm vs. 65 nm chip.
Inc and EVO have a 65nm chip. The smaller the nm number the better for battery life and putting out heat from the cpu. If the X has better battery life and u get a bigger size battery for the X, it will still have better battery life than the Inc. Although the Inc screen being smaller and Amolded, (Amoled uses less battery than LCD) plus adding the same size battery as the X, that might offset and the Inc & X might wind up having the same battery life. Out the box battery life goes to the X.

The cpu in the X is just better and faster.

The X has a better gpu.

A noise cancelling mic for call quality.

The X has 3 mics total thats used for different audio settings when doing video recording: narrative, subject and everyday.

Diversity Antennas for better reception. I'm basing this off me having the Droid: If the X gets me better reception than the Droid?? Thats amazing. Motorola has been knows for having better reception than most other phones. Compared to 2 Samsung phones I had in the past the Droid's reception is better than both phones. i never used an HTC phone before.

The screen just based on the PC Mag review. I normally say screen is preference tho. Mainly I will say the X is better cuz it uses a 24bit screen that can show 16 million colors vs. the 16bit display in the Inc that can show 65 thousand colors. And the X showing more accurate colors. Just based on that review the X should have a better screen vs. the Inc.

And this isnt hardware, but this version of Blur is supposed to not be tied to the OS so tight. That would make for faster OS updates. Motorola CEO said the OS and Blur apps can be updated separately from each other. Sense UI seems to make for faster homescreen scrolling. That can be fixed on the X with Launcher Pro or ADW. Web browsers on HTC phones are better than the one on the X with resizing, rearranging text using pinch to zoom and using Flash Lite. Neither can be done on the X (the X resizes, rearranges text on the web using double tap. and the X cant use Flash Lite)

I think thats all I got.

1). Giving up more vibrant colors
2). more pocketable phone
3). capacitive buttons
4). sense ui (Friends widget, bookmark widget, black notification bar, Custom lock screen, custom launcher, custom music control, better looking dialer, smart dialer, easier social contact integration and much better looking, smooth scrolling, ect..)
5). optical trackball (to edit text more precise)
6). stronger flash
7). Louder speaker
8.) much easier/quicker copy and paste (another sense feature but a big one)
9.) Ability to root (hopefully will come to the x soon)
10.) ability to play any media through your t.v. instead of just user created.
11.) roomers pointing towards htc phones getting 2.2 first already in testing.
12.) Flash support (lite by default, full if you download an extra apk)
13.) ability to change the sd card while the phone is on

I have a choice to go with the x, my dad said hes going to trade me for the incredible and since I'm a tech geek I think I am going to go with the X for the increased cpu/gpu and bigger screen. Overall I honestly believe the incredible is a better phone for the vast majority though. First thing I will do with this phone IF it ever gets rooted is put a sense ui based rom on it.

None of you even answered the ops question the bias on this forum is about as bad as on the iphone ones its obnoxious, I've noticed less bias over at the incredible forums along with a nicer community which could be one more + for the inc.

^Well wouldnt it better for someone to answer that actually used the Inc? Like u did?

Based on what u put:

1. Vibrant, some say over saturated, colors vs more accurate colors. Is that giving something up or making a trade off?

2. Yea the Inc is smaller. U giving up size. But the OP even said that has them wanting the X. So why mention size?

3.Capacitive buttons vs hard ones. U giving it up, but there is a trade off.

4. Sense UI. Yea it is better for smooth home screen scrolling. But with Blur not being tied to the OS so tight, it will get OS updates faster. Another Trade off.

5. Optical Trackpad. Yea u giving that up.

6. Stronger flash. Gonna say Giving that up.

7. Louder speaker. Gonna say Giving that up.

8. I thought the X had the same type of copy /paste feature that the Inc has?

9. Ability to root....maybe something thats giving up. The OP might not want to root.

10. Giving that up.

11. Is rumors....how can u be giving up rumors?

12. I mentioned that

13. Giving that up.

So to me 5,6,7,maybe 9,10,12,13 are all definite things that the OP will be giving up. Everything else, there is a trade off or dont apply.

I dont know about anyone else, but I never used an Inc phone before so I cant say what the OP will be giving up.

How is it biased? Everyone answered to the best of their ability? Cuz it wasnt as detailed its biased?

Thanks for saving me some time there.

Also the RAM in the X is LPDDR2 and Inc is LPDDR1. LPDDR2 has better clock rates and is more power efficient. Another good thing for battery life.

The X also has a dedicated GPU so it will see better performance for videos, games, opengl apps...

Again... another great post. I guess I haven't had the phone (Incredible) long enough to figure out the copy and paste function. And so far I have been less than impressed by the optical trackball, coming from my roller ball of my tour.. guess.

Has anyone had a good chance to play with the Camera on both phones? I have had A LOT of trouble with the using the optical trackball for the camera. I guess I am not holding my mouth right or something. I've seen great pics come out of that camera, but I haven't found the trick to that either. A camera with a fast shutter is important to me too. I use it alot to send clients updates of their pets when hospitalized. Moving pets are tricky.

Yea...lol I was gonna mention LPDDR2 in the X vs. LPDDR1 in the Inc. I didnt know if that was going above n beyond..lol I guess that would be one more hardware thing to add thats the X has over the Inc.

The X doesnt actually have a dedicated gpu. Both the Inc and X have a gpu thats on their SoC. (system-on-a-chip) Its just the gpu in the X is better. If it was dedicated, it would be installed somewhere seperate on the main board, and not on the SoC.

Along with my edited post under yours...this is from the OP:

U saying no one else even answered the OP question? If u read the OP..why even mention anything related to size or the UI? U can take 2, 4 and 12 off your list then. Thats why it woulda been best for someone that actually used the Inc or researched it good to answer. Like u did. Everyone wont have the best answers. U did a good job answering tho.

I have the Inc right now & have had since a couple days before launch day. It's a great phone, but I think the X is going to really be something special, which is why I'm trading my Inc + $75 for the X, I really do think it is going to be that much better of a phone. Nothing against the Inc though, my biggest issue is that the community is extremely small and it seems like the ONLY reason for that is HTC & the backorder. And with the X & Droid 2 coming out so soon after the Inc, I'm not too sure that as many people are going to get it that would have if these two phones didn't follow so quickly. I think there will be more devs dedicating their time to the X than the Inc.

What you really need to do is just use the Inc for the next couple of weeks, go into a VZW & play with the X when it comes out and make the best choice for you, not what everyone else thinks, because if you haven't noticed yet, people around here are pretty dedicated to the phone that they think is the best and don't want to hear from anyone that some other phone is better.

I'm Airmaxx23 and I support this message...

The only things I would add is that the X feels sturdier and I only need to charge it at night.

I have a Droid Eris (the Incredible's younger brother) and I went and tried out an Incredible in the VZW store the other day...and needless to say, I was far less than impressed. It felt like a slightly larger and faster version of the phone I already had, nothing too special...

HTC is a pain, and while Sense is kinda cool for a bit, it makes it so that Android OS updates take FOREVER to get the new version of Android...and because HTC is pumping out phones like crazy, the build quality definitely seems to decrease and get shoddier.

Plus....4.3" touch screen...'nuff said. Yes.

Go for the Moto Droid X!

Are you sure? Where did you see this? Everywhere I have seen has said it is dedicated. Shouldn't make a difference where it is, only that it has dedicated memory for the gpu to work with.
