So, this is likely just an individual store thing, but I went to my local Verizon corporate store today to check out their live demo of the phone. (Seems that every other store in the Chicago area has a demo you can try right now...it's hit or miss though.)
Anyways, the guy asks if I'd like to be placed on the store's pre-order list. I told him that I thought Verizon wasn't doing pre-orders. He told me that they've had so many requests, they've started one. He said if I didn't get on the list, there's a good chance I could still get one on the 15th, but that this would guarantee a unit for me - for at least that day. No obligation to buy. He was explaining all of this in front of other employees (so it wasn't like he was doing this on the sly), took my info down and gave me a tear-off confirmation sheet (although it's basically the sheet they use when you sign-in when coming in the store).
The demo Droid X phone was pretty awesome. I'm still within my 30-days with a Sprint Evo, and this has definitely tempted me. Hell, I'm on the list now, so maybe I'll give the X a try.
