Verizon just took my pre-order?!

So, this is likely just an individual store thing, but I went to my local Verizon corporate store today to check out their live demo of the phone. (Seems that every other store in the Chicago area has a demo you can try right now...it's hit or miss though.)

Anyways, the guy asks if I'd like to be placed on the store's pre-order list. I told him that I thought Verizon wasn't doing pre-orders. He told me that they've had so many requests, they've started one. He said if I didn't get on the list, there's a good chance I could still get one on the 15th, but that this would guarantee a unit for me - for at least that day. No obligation to buy. He was explaining all of this in front of other employees (so it wasn't like he was doing this on the sly), took my info down and gave me a tear-off confirmation sheet (although it's basically the sheet they use when you sign-in when coming in the store).

The demo Droid X phone was pretty awesome. I'm still within my 30-days with a Sprint Evo, and this has definitely tempted me. Hell, I'm on the list now, so maybe I'll give the X a try. :D

Nice! Most likely an individual store thing going on.

Anyway how did you like the screen compared to your Evo?

Yeah, it didn't seem official. In fact, the weird part was, the sales guy kinda gave the girl at the sign-in a dirty look when she told me that he had a demo behind the counter. He told me they're not supposed to show it yet (and it wasn't activated). So, they're basically hiding the demo, but taking rogue pre-orders... go figure!

Screen seemed about the same in quality, but I was near a bright window, so it was hard to tell. They were very comparable though. And from a size standpoint, the slimness of the X felt better in my hands. I have a dilemma now. I good dilemma though.

Well to hear you have a dilemma is a good thing indeed. :p

I'm sure the stores that are doing "pre-orders" are just putting your name on a list and setting one aside for you. Just hope it doesn't bite them in the ass if they don't get enough to fulfill their lists.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. If they get a long line on launch day and sell-out of the non-pre-orders quickly, I'm sure their zone managers won't appreciate them holding mine and the other "pre-orders" in the back - considering this isn't official. Feels good to be on a list though. Although, I'll likely get mine from another store near my office, if I decide to get one.

I too went to my local store yesterday. When I asked if they had a Droid X that I could possible "play around with," the one rep looked at the other, who kind of shrugged and pulled one out from behind the counter.

I also got my name on the "list." They made sure I knew that it wasn't a "preorder," just a list of people interested in it. I'm guessing they're using this to try and get more phones on launch day.

As to the question about on-line vs in-store purchases: Online orders give you an instant discount instead of the MIR. You also get free overnight shipping, so you don't have to wait too long for it. I was planning on ordering online, but may just pick one up from the store.

I just went into my local VZW corporate store and asked about the Droid X. I told them I got the Droid on launch day and had to do the same with the X. He pulled up my account, made sure I was credit worthy and in good standing. He then went into the stock room for a few minutes. When he came out he gave me his business card and personal cell number and said I had a reservation and they would hold one for me. He said he would call me on the 14th to confirm everything was set and that they would be opening at 8:00AM on the big day.

I am hoping I have a reservation at this point and am assured to have an X. I wonder if they already have stock and he put my name on one?

I've been told no pre-orders. However I could make an appointment which would help my chances securing a phone.. somehow.
I work night shifts and get off at 0300. Curious if anyone knows of any incentive to ordering the phone online? I.E instant rebate in lieu of mail in or anything?

You also may get a better price depending on your account. With my corporate discount I'm hoping online this device is $99 not $199, it is for the DINC.

Good point! Forgot about my discount.
I had a Dinc. Loved the phone, and wouldn't have changed. But... My son had some issues at school earlier in the year (grade and behavior) so I made a promise to him that I would upgrade his LG Dare to like the droid or something if he didn't get any more D's and F's. Sweetened the deal that if he finished through the remainder of the year with A/B honor roll (way outta reach?) I'd get him an Incredible. I figured there was no chance... yeah so..... Im sporting a VERY used LG Dare right now, with a very happy, smarter son to show for it! Expensive lesson learned on my part. But well worth the price. :D

You can never make a deal with kids that involves something like that then they have a reason to really excel and try to reach that goal lol
