Podcast App Needed

Anyone know of a good podcast management app. I was spoiled with apple's os. right now im just dragging them over, but when i have music everything gets mixed in with each other.

Believe it or not, I'm just getting into the whole podcast thing. What constitutes a valid podcast address? I've been using Listen, and the search feature was pretty cool. However, I was checking out podcast.com and saw a few podcasts I wanted to listen to but when I try to add podcast.com manually I was unable to.

I've been listening to podcasts for over 4 years and in fact even produced a Hip Hop Music podcast for about a year. I think it is the single coolest app for people who commute in car or train everyday.

For me Google Listen is pretty revolutionary as a Podcast app and the coolest thing to come along in a while, so those of you just getting into it don't take the comments above out of context. I wholeheartedly recommend Google Listen to anyone just getting into Podcast listening or looking for an everyday app. I think it is the best and main way to enjoy Podcasts for the average Podcast listener and exactly fits into the future of Android since it is in essence always on and always searchable for new podcasts.

The limitations of it being pointed out above maybe that its not transparently picking up in URLs/Hyperlinks from the browser. If you all want to post what you are tryign to/want to do from Podcast.com though I think I can tell you how to do it with Google Listen.

More as an attempt to educate on Podcasts: The older /main style of Podcast apps are those that download the Podcast episode/MP3 to your Harddrive/SD Card for you so that they can be listend to with any Music Player. This is especially good if you want your computer to check each night when you are asleep and can synch them to your device in the morning before you leave the house. Itunes follows this model and other apps on Android availble form the app store also will do this but from your phone to your SD card. Listen follws more the model of Search and Listen. In essence you search for a Podcast and Listen to it right then and there streaming over the Internet. That said Google Listen can also save to your SD card and Can check when you are at home (WIFI and charging) and can go directly to a specific Podcast/Feed but is more oriented to the next generation.

Hey Illini, maybe you can start updating you initial post with the list of apps you've found and or other suggest and the general Pros' and Con's. This could turn into a good FAQ/Sticky for Podcast apps.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't complaining about any app in particular. I was just saying how new I am to podcasting. Since I'm a Linux user primarily, I have never used Itunes. But you explained the difference in approach quite well, and it sounds like Itunes makes it easy to choose a podcast to download. I like Listen's search capability. You are right: the main Podcatcher in the Universe is iTunes and even more people will register their Podcast feed with iTunes than with any other website/service so it is sort of the encyclopedia of them. Not very friendy for searching though so that's a feature I think Listen does better. On the other hand as you pointed out - if Google hasn't indexed it for searching from Listen then it can't be easily found from Listen. I think the algorithm for Indexing Podcasts in Listen must be kid of weak or in Beta or maybe it's just more difficult than it seems because I know at least my Podcast doesn't show up there. There's reasons for that but that's really changing the subject.

In terms of iTunes, if you have a PC or MAC there is a easy way though kind of manually intensive to use it with Android. You find and subscribe to the Podcasts there and then open the iTunes/Music/odcasts folder and drag them into your Music Folder in Android. If anyone wanted that procedure in a little more detail, let me know.

From Listen Home screen you push the Menu Button and "Add". However you do have to know the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) URL for the podcast to add it this way.

What is a Podcast's RSS URL. RSS (in the podcasting world) is in essence the webpage that Podcast Apps access to see the list of all Episodes available and read the Meta Data (info about each episode). These RSS pages have a specific format and are different from the Website/main page/blog that each Podcaster usually also keeps. So to find the RSS feed URL you usually have to go to the main page of the Podcast itself and there is almost always a link it it, usually in the upper left corner. Often you have to right click on it and view it's properties to see it. Typing that URL into the Add dialog in Listen will then set up Listen to treat that Podcast as one of your Subscribed ones in Listen.

I've been listening to podcasts for about 6 years and I can tell you that streaming sucks and is not worth wile, what you want is a program that can download the show so you can listen to it when you want, and keep track of the ones that you have listened to and the ones that are new. So you can delete the one you have already listened to and not get confused by relistening to them. I for one don't want to be listening to a show with my phone streaming it making a large tumor in my head as I sleep?

The best feature you can have is restart where you left off, and to be able to read a full feed not just a short outline like most programs give you.

I wasted 6.99 on dogcatcher, what a rip. But I did find the best one. Beyondpod. it's also 6.99 but it's well worth it. has all the features you could ever want and auto schedule your downloads.


And PLEASE can people stop saying and typing THAT SAID, or THAT BEING SAID? man I hate that crap.

And this seems to be the answer I was looking for. I will attempt to add a feed manually using the procedure you just described and report back if I got the hang of it. Oh yeah, been a long time Linux user at home. I rarely use windows at home (though I have to at work). My wife uses Windows because she has some specialized apps she uses for braille transcribing that don't have a Linux version. Otherwise, I'd have her using it too.

It seems to be a personal preference regarding which way is best. You prefer the download method, while Jame Bob prefers the search and stream method. THAT BEING SAID, I'm trying both ways to find what works for me.

Haven't seen anyone mention Beyond Pod yet. Google Listen is too bare bones for me. Beyond Pod does a great job as both a podcast player and a RSS reader. My only complaint is that the UI is more cumbersome than it should be. Otherwise, it's a very nice alternative to Listen.

BeyondPod or DoggCatcher. I like the built-in player of BeyondPod better than DoggCatcher which I tended to fat-finger more.

Ok I am really new to podcasts to please bear with me. I really enjoy listening to ESPN radio and recently found out about all of the shows I can get podcasts for. So I looked on here for info as I always do about my phone and decided to try Listen. It is great...it has most of the ESPN shows I want, but I ran into a problem.
When I would listen to the podcast, it would basically do the normal show for the first 5 mins or so till first comercial and then after the comercial it would repeat the first five minutes or so again. The show is supposed to be about 35 mins long, but all I am getting is the same segments over and over again.
Am I doing something wrong?

Don't know what to tell you. I used Listen to search for espn's football today. I was able to find the feed and subscribe to the podcast. Listening for the last half hour and no issues yet. Then again, no breaks for ads so, maybe that's it? I haven't listened to any podcasts that have ads, now that I think about it. Are you sure you're using the latest Listen? It was updated last week, I think.

Another vote for BeyondPod. I like having my RSS feeds and Podcasts all in one. I don't usually spend money on an app but this is well worth the 6.99. Plus they let you try it for a week for free to see if you like it.
