So I just successfully bought a Motorola Droid off of ebay for $275 even. Im officially a Droid gal. Its coming from a dev that got it free from the Google I/O event, so its pretty new, and the guy is shipping it to me with all the dirty work taken care of (Its rooted with BB's Froyo 2.2 rom on it) and a generous 8gb micro sd to top it off. So im satisfied..and cant wait :D

Now that the inevitable geeking out is out of the way, I was wondering any certain things I should do first? Im also up for any other recommendations to start me off, like your favorite places to buy cheap accessories for the device etc. If not, its all good. Just stopping by to join the community of Droid owners.

Buy "ROM Manager" From the marketplace. It's a very good app that allows you to switch between different Roms easily and quickly. You can even download new ones directly from the app.

Welcome to the Droid fraternity/sorority! :p

I think you're gonna LOVE this phone!

I would recommend that the FIRST thing you do is go into recovery and make a backup of the phone's current state so if you change something and it doesn't work right, you can always revert back to that. You'll find that I'm really big on backing up.
Thank you, thank you. Im pretty happy to join. I originally got the Droid when it first came out, but I wasnt able to afford the $30 data plan so had to return it much to my dismay. I also had trouble with the keyboard, but Im ready now.

Ah, right. Forgot to mention that. Its also coming with SPRecovery on it. Im not familiar with it, but I believe I can create the complete back ups with this, no?

Yay! More ladies on the droid side lol

It is a good phone..slightly laggy but i actually do love this phone :)

Btw if you by a clip DO NOT buy it through verizon.

Those are poorly built pieces of crap and it destroyed my first droid(and eris)
by literally slipping out. it wasn't tight enough or snug enough to hold it in

Monoprice.com is about the cheapest place I've found for cables and car chargers and such. Note that if you get the OEM car mount ($20 on Amazon, say), it comes with a car charger.

A lot of recommendations depend on what you want to do with the phone - I'm a geek, so I needed a text editor (TxtPad Light is the best I've found, though I think I'm going to have to write one to get all the features I want).

Minor, non-obvious tips: If you have pictures or whatever that you don't want to show up in the gallery and/or music player, put a file called ".nomedia" in their directory. Hold-press on the screen and explore the 'widgets' - the 'News and Weather' one is pretty cool. I've found a program called "Mototorch LED" handy sometimes - forces the LED flash on, turns the Droid into a passable flashlight.

That's off the top of my head. I've really been pleased with this gadget, hope you will be, too!

Once you get the rommanager (Free or Donate version) you can flash CW on it instead of SPRecovery. It's easier to use, but is very temperamental.

Thanks! Once again, all incredibly helpful. All of you! I really did bookmark this thread for when it comes :p

Thanks for the welcome into the community aswell. Cant wait to get started. Ill let this thread die now. Takeshi is correct; I probably could have helped forum traffic if I just took bits and pieces from the tips/hints threads.
