Short version: Is there a way to prevent the phone from locking while on an active call?

Former iPhone user here....

With the iphone, there was a sensor that detected when your face was near the phone, so the screen was blank and disabled but the phone was not locked. When you pull your face away, the screen is active again.

On the Evo, it seems it has a similar sensor. However, after a minute it'll actually lock the phone for me while on an active call. So in order to hang up, I have to fumble with the phone to press the top button, then fumble some more to press end.

Is there a way to prevent the phone from locking while on an active call, yet allow it to disable the screen when it detects it's being held up to the face?

Same issue here and very annoying. There are two options for unlocking the phone: 1) swipe your hand over the sensor in the upper left corner. It will take a second or two for the screen to light up or 2) press the top button and fumble with the keypad/end call button.

This is an issue that not many are talking about and needs to be fixed.

Interesting, my phone never locks while in a call. I just tested this now, no lock just the end call screen. Version 2, no tazk killers, no root, no special keyboard or dialer apps. It works like I would expect It to. I feel it has always worked this way, before and after the update.

The phone does not lock when you are in a call. If yours is the possibilities are that you have an App installed that is causing it to lock or you have a bug in your software. Best thing to do is backup all of your info with a good backup program and perform a hard reset. If that still doesn't fix it Sprint Tech support is the next route I would go

Is there any way to unlock the phone without having to press the top button?

You mean turn on the phone? No... once the screen goes off (except when the proximity sensor turns it off during a phone call) the only way to turn it back on is with the power button. What happens when you make a phone call and put the phone to your face? does the screen go dark?

Yes, screen goes dark like it should. After a prolonged call, it won't be active again until I press the top power button.

The placement of this solo unlock button is terrible, especially with a phone so large. If there was an app that would allow me to swipe my finger across the bottom or anything like that to easily bring up the unlock screen I'd gladly pay $20.

One way around it would be to install a lock app. I have a free app called "no lock". You put the widget on your home screen and just tap it to disable the lock and tap again to enable it. When disabled it allows you to kick the phone out of sleep with any physical button (read: volume buttons) and not have to swype anything. Very nice feature when i have the phone on my desk with no risk of making accidental calls. In your case your fingers are already near the volume buttons so it would eliminate any awkward fumbling.

Not sure what is happening with your phone but I would contact Sprint tech support. No matter how long my phone call (I had over an hour convo this morning) my phone goes right back to the call screen once I pull it away from my face. The capacitive buttons at the bottom need the screen on to function. You can try No Lock like the above poster suggests. As far as the power button goes... having a case with the cut out for the power button helps my finger find it first time every time

Shake Awake. I use it...I love it. Some say that the EVO already does this...but I wasn't having any luck with the screen returning while on a call until I installed this program.

Shake Awake - Android app on AppBrain
My phone works fine while on a phone call and when my phone moves away from the ear too. Shake Awake looks like a concept I am looking for, let me explain. While at work the screen times out and everytime to wake up the screen or see the new message/email I have to hit the power/volume button(about 50 times during work day). Is there an app like this which I can keep active while at work so that I shake it and the screen becomes active?? Sorry for the side discussion.

+1 My EVO never locks while on a call, as soon as I pull it away from my ear the sensor turns the screen on and lets me hit the end call button.

Do you have your phone charging? If so, you can set it to be always on while plugged in. Menu-->Settings-->Applications-->Development
