Help Ally question..

This may very well be a stupid question, to warn in advance! My wife and I have never had smartphones, but decided to go ahead and take the plunge. I'll be getting a Droid X, but my wife is fond of the Ally and leaning towards it. The main reason she wanted a smartphone to begin with is that she tends to get lost easily, so she's wanting to use Google Navigation, and some of the other mainstream apps like Google Talk. Those should all work on the Ally, right?

Also, how much does the internal memory limit you generally? From what I understand (which is limited, admittedly), 2.1 requires apps to be run off internal memory and not SD card. The X has 8gigs which is more than plenty, but the Ally looks like it only has around 100mb? Would that limit your apps pretty heavily, or are most apps small enough that it isn't an issue?

Most apps are pretty small so she shouldn't have a problem. I have an Ally and yes you can use maps/talk/nav just fine. The phone is a little slow (2.2 should clear that up) and it should get me by for another year until my lines upgrade is up.

I was going to get the X but I'm skipping this gen of high-end android devices. Battery life is way to bad.

If all she wants to use it for is mainly the Navigation, and a few other apps, you'll likely do fine. I was running somewhere around 20-25 apps (added to the system, not including what came with the phone), and syncing to our Exchange server at work, and typically ran around 40-45m free at any given time.

I also wouldn't count on the 2.2 update for the Ally, as LG has concerns on running 2.2 on a phone with only 108m free for the system (it was mentioned by the moderator over at lgcommunity.com, the official LG forum site), where most of the phones with 2.2 have much more free memory out of the 512m for the system to use.

And just so you know, that 8gb in the Moto is basically a built in flash, if it's like the Inc. Can't be used for Apps until 2.2 comes out, but at that point you should be fine.

Actually I think the 8gb internal storage on the X is FOR apps (well, probably about 6.5gb of it). And the type of storage isn't this issue, it's how it's partitioned. I have no idea WHY Moto thought that all that space would be necessary. Especially since with 2.2 lets you move apps to the SD card. But even without that, you an install 6,656 apps (assuming an average of 1mb per app).

One reason I can think of:

Have all your apps stored on SD, then pop out that SD for whatever reason. What happens on the phone when it's app storage disappears?

I have a feeling that one of the reasons these newer phones are coming with 8g of internal storage is for the Apps2SD-style setup, it's a large amount of flash memory that's not removable, so no worries about it being pulled out, but it's cheaper than what they are using for Ram in the phones. And as for the X's 8g of memory, I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that it's NOT primary app storage on the shipping phones, they are running 2.1, so main application storage is going to be in the 512m onboard, and user data storage will be on the SD, just like the Incredible and Evo. The Ally doesn't have any storage aside from your SD card and the built-in 256m, so you'd need to dedicate your SD card to Apps2SD-style actions, no removing it whenever you want, otherwise you'd have problems with apps running on the phone...
