Hey guys. Very sad news. I dropped my rooted Incredible today and the screen shattered in the top left :(. It had a case on it and everything but it didnt help. I guess it's not gorilla glass afterall. The phone still works and is in perfect condition otherwise, I had babied it until I dropped it today. Phone is rooted and has Clockworkmod Recovery.

Credit card's insurance wont cover it and I dont have verizon's insurance since I'm usually very careful with my tech. I cant afford to buy a new one for $400+. What can I do? Any advice.

Pics of my woe attached.

I feel you. I dropped my DInc baby a few weeks ago from knee level to the ground and the glass cracked in the upper right hand corner.... I had insurance for that very reason. I'm so careful with my gadgets but accidents can & do happen especially ones that involve gravity.

I don't want to be shady but have you had your phone for 30days?? You have up to 30days to add insurance. If that's the case add the insurance and wait a week or so to file the claim.

How long have you had it? You have a grace period in which you can add insurance through Verizon.

Ohh... good point! I think you have 30 days to add your insurance coverage. Call Verizon and check with them.

If you can add it now, do it. Then just fudge the date of the accident a little... morally wrong I know, but I would!

That's the first thing I tried, because the Verizon rep I talked to at the store said I could add the insurance at anytime, but he was mistaken... When I called Verizon they said, it's only within 30 days and Ive had mine since launch. I guess he had no idea what he was talking about.

Any idea if the digitizer touch panel includes the glass screen? That part is $68 but there's a quantity of 3 minimum purchase.

No screen protector was on the phone... however, that's for scratches mostly. Don't think it will protect against falls at all. (I'm very careful and had no scratches on my screen without a protector)

It did have a silicon case on it... yet somehow still slipped out of my hand.

The silicon case didn't protect it??? Or was it not on at the moment. This phone is does definitely not have good build quality IMHO. You would be the second person I have encountered that had a case on it and it still cracked.

We can trash the I-phone all you want but no way does that phone shatter from one drop. Especially with a case on it.

I did the exact same thing w/o insurance. You need to call HTC. They will direct you to PCD Systems who handles their CDMA devices. I sent mine in and had it back in about 15-20 days. The total cost was $109. Much better than the $400 and you don't have to have a guilty conscience for adding insurance after the fact. :)

Or it's bad luck. I've dropped my poor INC a couple of times from similar heights and so far so good. I do have a hard case for it, but honestly, I just think it's luck. I also have the insurance, because I know it's a matter of time before I break it as I've broken almost every other cell phone I've ever had.

I'm pretty sure any phone could fail the drop test in one drop, just really depending on the circumstances. To the OP sorry to see this sort of thing happen, but with a little bit of time you could prolly restore it to it's pre-root os

I realize that but if he had a silicon case on it that is a little strange. I have always carried my I-phone naked (dropped several times) and as of now do the same with my incredible but I am probably going to go out and get a case ASAP.

I really don't like the body glove case but sure seems like that might be the only option.

I have dropped my phone several times with and without a case on. A couple of those times I had the Innocase on it and the phone hit concrete. It just bounced up about 8-12inches hit the ground again. No issues. I am glad I bought that Innocase.

I really don't understand why some people dont get insurance on a $400+ device. If you can afford a high end phone then you can afford a few extra bucks a month to cover it. Its like the guys who buy high end expensive cars that need premium gas then bitch about the extra cost of premium.

The insurance on mine would have DOUBLED the effective cost of the phone. Then factor in deductible, and the limitations (get it wet and you're SOL, and it wouldn't cover if it was stolen/lost), it's NOT worth it for me.

It just occurred to me that I don't think anybody mentioned Homeowners or renters insurance. You MIGHT be cover under that. Definitely worth the phone call to check.

Regarding insurance, people should check with their homeowners' insurance. They may be able to write a separate policy the cover your phone for much cheaper.

Example: I got a policy to cover both my wife's and my Incredibles: $1060 coverage, $50 deductible, for $27 per year. It covers anything except mysterious disappearance (i.e. if I lost it myself).

The same reason people buy expensive cars and only get liability insurance. If you have the money to buy an expensive toy, you have the money to gamble on whether or not you are going to wreck it.

It is worth the gamble for me... I just keep knocking on wood.

(I also only have liability on my vehicle)
Probably need to knock on wood again.
