Please help my girlfriend stay in touch with me while she's in the US using her Android phone.

Hello everyone,

I have a practical question for you all.

I live in Europe and my girlfriend is going to visit the US with a colleague next month. Unfortunately, calling home is quite expensive from the US ($1,5/minute), especially since she plans on calling for more than 10 minutes each day. She wanted to do so using VoIP, but she did not want to drag along a laptop she doesn't need. So I introduced her to the HTC Wildfire, which would go nicely with my HTC Desire. Considering her previous phone had the functionality of a communicative concrete brick, she absolutely loves the device. The only problem is that data communication is also quite expensive in the US than calling. They would charge her around $4/MB. (If I'm not mistaking VoIP would be around 500kb/minute, or around $2/minute). The hotel where she is staying offers internet at an even higher price per hour, so that's not an option as well.

So, this brings me to my question. The best way for her to accomplish her scheme would probably be to get a prePaid card with a data plan. That way she could use all the neat features of her cellphone (like Google Maps and such) and have internet access 24/7. I'd love to hear your opinions on this, and what carrier plan would suit her best. (Or is there another solution, like free wifi hotspots? She's heading to Manhattan, NY.)

Thanks in advance.

Every McDonald's restaurant in the US is supposed to have free Wifi. I don't really visit Manhattan, but I have been told that There is almost a constant internet connection throughout much of the city as well.... I am sure she will be able to find free access to the interwebs if she needs.....

Maybe someone who lives there can add to what I have said or correct me if I'm wrong......

Umm... if she's hot, there's free wifi at my house... ;)

Seriously though, wifi is plentiful in any big city, and even in smaller ones, just about every fast food restaurant has wifi anymore. Burger King, McDonalds, and most hotels have free wifi.

Or check out TiKL, it's an Android PTT that can run over 3G or WiFi, available in the market. On wifi it is fast and clear, same for 3G, but exceptional on WiFi, and since WiFi will be the cheapest route, I would suggest that. To keep from racking up data on 3G, use GTalk to send texts back and forth... international texting without the absurd rates! And on WiFi, it would be free.

There we go. lol The signatures on this forum doesn't really show up as signatures (like a line dividing the post from the signature). I was trying to make that quote into part of the post but was not understanding how it fit in. hehe The "- Harry Truman" part does help.

Shows up fine with my signature, at least on my end.

-Edit: Well, it did before this post anyways, LOL!

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. Yes, she's hot and I'll ask her if she wants to post some naked pictures of her for you all to admire here. Unfortunately, she's too hot to run the risk of her throwing my ass out after posting some of those pictures myself.

We'll go with the free WiFi + VoIP solution and we'll check out the PTT idea as well. :)
