So what phone are you going to get when you can dump your Eris brick?

So was wondering what phone people are thinking of getting who are not happy with there Eris after the the OTA to 2.1.
I can get out from under this brick at the end of Aug, I was thinking of getting a Moto Droid.

The most oft repeated criticism of the Droid seems to be the junky keyboard. I've seen a few posts reporting that they like it, but certainly not most.

Otherwise, besides the device's size and ugly factor (which is a selling point to some ), Droid users seem pretty happy.

The reviews at the Verizon site have remained consistent at 4 and 1/2 stars out of 5 for months on end.

I was one of the lucky ones and received a good Eris right from the beginning, no bugs, lag or problems at 1.5, 2.1 or rooted, so I'll have it indefinitely as it suits my purposes 100%, plus I like its looks very much.

why would you trade one phone thats been out for a year for another. Why not get something new like the X, droid 2, facinate, incredible. Something with a 1Ghz processor so you don't start off behind the curve.

I am, however, going to be looking at the DroidX next week. Fact is that 99% of the people on the boards with an eris will bail on the phone for something new when there new every 2 comes up. We all love the next best phone right??

Sorry, I certainly phrased that wrong (meant no offense). I do think we're more likely to see folks report their problems (i.e., that their phones don't work like they wish that they would) here than folks that haven't had a lot of problems. I've only seen a few threads of people espousing how trouble-free their phones are. I've had the occasional force closes, weird things happen, but unless they are consistent / persistent issues, I don't consider them anything more than a glitch. (also, using Microsoft products for all of this time tends to inure one to anything less than a blue screen of death ).

You're right; if I had a device that became anything less than what if was at the point of purchase, I'd take measures to have it replaced. Failing that I'd go to another device altogether.

Keep in mind, though, that those of us fortunate enough to have a good Eris are quite likely in the vast majority.

Users with phone problems go to forums for help, and when they encounter a great forum such as this one, they remain and become part of a community. I'd venture an estimate of about 70% to 30% good to bad devices among the Eris using population at large and quite the opposite in the forums.

I looked at the Droid first before buying my Eris. I didn't like the keyboard from the start, althought this wasn't why I didn't purchase the Droid.

The keyboard on the Droid 2 is supposed to be much better. But a larger screen on the Droid X should make it much easier to type on using its virtual keyboard (at least that's what I'm hoping--I have troubles typing on the Eris too).

Of course I can be a bit of a galut with things that appear to be toys made by Mattel.

Unfortunately, I have to wait till next July before I'm up for another phone, I'll have to see what available then. If I could do it today, I'd drop VZW and get an iPhone.

Right now, I have a SmartPhone that's missing the "Phone" part... If VZW or HTC could fix the issues with the phone part, the ERIS would be a great SmartPhone...

My Eris isn't a piece of crap, but I'm looking forward to Motorola's 2 GHz phone that's supposed to come out before the end of the year. That's definitely something that I'm drooling over.

I hear you on those numbers.
Do you think I should bother taking up Verizons offer to replace my eris with another? What do you think my chace of getting a bug free 2.1 eris is?
Thing I don't understand is I did have any bugs or problems like some before the update.

do you have the 50% bug or the signal meter bug?
those don't effect the phone, just little irritating. I do have to say I did fix one BIG bug, the OEM message was force closing all the time, now using chomp and having no prob.

I do not trust any of the Eris display data, not even the battery meter, let alone the signal strength bars; I have a new name for those goofy little things, "cartoon barn thermometers."

About replacement Eris devices, we've seen reports in these forums swearing they're on their 4th or 5th one and still experiencing the silent bug or whatever. And then somebody will pop into the thread and mention that their refurb is the cat's meow. So, as always, ymmv.

Laggy devices, unless defective, which I suspect in the Eris as I see how common it is, are sometimes just overloaded with resource draining apps, browser and phone history, old messages and emails and full app caches.

A creative search in Market may yield an application which mimics the signal bar of the Eris, but I do not see the use of such a thing given the data available in "about phone." Mine remains at around -67dbm 90% of the time despite one or no signal bars at times and three at other times with the same dbm reading in the menu.

As it is, I am quite fortunate at two locations: work and home. The tower near where I work is a shared unit with AT&T, Sprint and Windstream, along with Verizon (old Alltel equipment). That one is about a quarter mile away.

The tower near my home is exactly 225 meters from my house, in a 300 acre field that the county owns and has a tornado siren and fire department transmitting apparatus. Alltel leased that one, too, and of course it is now Verizon's.

Mine is normally around -95 dbm. Only in the basement though. I get a much better signal upstairs and outside. I can still make calls flawlessly though.

Except for the processor. Its still an ARMv6 like in the Eris but clocked slightly higher. Higher res screen though.

You might come across some lag issues, but since its running vanilla Android mostly, it might be lesser so.

I felt the keyboard on a mock-up and it felt pretty good.

Perhaps the moto-droid keyboard would have been better if they dumped the d-pad and expanded it and then stole the touch pad from the devour and stuck it in a similar place.

I wonder how VZW decides what gets the Droid moniker and what doesn't? Maybe they didn't want to call the Ally the Droid EnV

+1 My next phone has to be a little beefier (and more prominent) so that it stays on the upgrade radar and doesn't get treated like an afterthought (like many feel the Eris was/is)--i.e., the delay in getting 2.1 in a timely manner.
