I had to do a complete reset of my phone to factory defaults as it turned out to be very sluggish latelly. Any recommendations as to what to do not to do, download not to download, or things to do first before reloading all my applications without getting back to a sluggish phone?
Any step by step procedure or process would be greatly appreciated...

Of course the best thing that could happen is to get 3.0 or whatever... Nah, that ain't gonna happen... The next best thing is to upgrade my phone...but... that aint gonna happen for me either for at least another 6 months...:(

Thanks!:):D

Depends on what you what to accomplish. Are you going to root is the big question. If so flash the stock DE03 with recovery and backup /system and /data before you do anything else so you can always revert if something is not to your liking. Otherwise your pretty much limited to stock 2.1 and market apps which can be easily removed if your not happy with them.

Flash to stock with root, then apply one of DearmasFamily's roms and it will act like a new phone. I ran the Ultimate Dream 3.2 for a while and it was rock solid and stable for me. I recently flashed the Ultimate 5.0 and it seemed a little flaky to me, and then the same day he released the Mighty Dream 1.0 and I flashed up to it and it is really nice. You can always reflash the stock unrooted rom if for somereason you decided you weren't happy, but I've never heard of anyone going back once they get a good custom rom on their phone. It unlocks a bunch of android features you won't be able to get any other way. I love my phone now.

The link is in my sig if you're curious.

I want my phone to run as smoothly as it possibly can... dntesinfrno... But I have no knowledge of rooting... I tried to learn a few months back thru the threads posted here, but it went over my head...:(
I am willing to give it a try, but I guess if something goes wrong I am stuck with the phone right?
What are the advantages of rooting the phone anyway? Is it worth the rouble in learning how to root?

Again ovrrdrive, thanks you both for the suggests, however you are talking a bit of chinese to me when you talking root stuff...
Is there a thread with step by step rooting for dummies information here in the forums? (I am sure there are at least a couple)...I just don't know where to start or finish to learn about it... I can see you can upgrade to better OS in the phone as you are talking about... I get really enthused to know the possibilities, but get discouraged with the learning curve...:(

I guess I need to learn Rooting for Dummies....:(:eek:

Sell me to it please...:D

Official Android DE03 2.1 with SDX custom recovery and BEYOND!

i used these instructions YESTARDAY to root my phone for the first time. read everything 2 or 3 times. it didnt make sense to me until i actually DID it.

dl either of those recovery files. go to the specified folder and put the DLed file into that folder (binary) while removing the file that is already in there.

use the Sprint Updater THE SAME WAY as you did for the official 2.1 upgrade. it will insall the kernal for you. if nothing else, JUST installing the kernal will give you an out of the box feel with WAY better performance and battery.

if you want to go custom ROM's.. i cant be of too much help as i am still in the discovery process for them as well. try the kernal install and go from there. GOOD LUCK AND DONT BE AFRAID!!!!

The instructions in EmoTonyB's post will get you rooted with the stock rom (this is a necessary step), then you just basically drop a custom rom zip on your SD card, boot into recovery mode (hold volume down, talk and end buttons while booting until it comes up), then go to the apply zip menu, select the custom rom you loaded and hit apply. It's really that easy...

If you use a DearmasFamily rom they're saying you can't use the custom kitchen at SDK because Dearmas is the only one using htc framework in his rom, but honestly that's a good thing. His roms are lightning fast on the phone. If anything happens you don't like you can just reflash the de03 with root to go back to stock or even the stock 2.1 rom from Sprint. As long as your phone is fully charged and you don't unplug anything when it's flashing you should be fine. I haven't seen anyone brick their phone that couldn't be reflashed yet.

If I were you I'd either flash the noob rom from SDK or the DearmasFamily Ultimate 3.3 or Mighty 1.1 and just amaze yourself with the difference. They both give live wallpapers out of the box and include the htc phone tools as well as probably 30 other enhancements.

As ovvdrive stated, there really isnt anything you can do that cant be undone as far as flashing stuff to the phone. The advantage of having root access is to allow system files otherwise protected to be edited/replaced allowing full access to the phones features such as live wallpapers, removing stock apps, wifi tethering, optimized library files which allow the process to do more work with less work if that make sense. Once you've done this stuff once you'll be a pro in no time. Then its just a matter of experimenting until you find something you like, no doubt finding things you dont like in the process. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with the recovery and how to backup/restore the /data and /system folders. In laymans terms the /data folder is where market apps and user settings are stored and /system is where stock apps and critical system files are kept. When flashing different roms the /system isnt as important as the rom will overwrite that folder anyways but the /data you will definitely want to keep as some roms will delete this as well.

There a ton of ways to root, some of the older are a bit more difficult but the easiest way to do it IMO is to

1. Flash the stock DE03 with recovery already included (http://forum.sdx-developers.com/downloads/?sa=view;down=197) and flash this with the sprint update tool.

2. Make your backup(s) - I put this here because this will give you a 'go-back-to' point if you flash something you dont like restore these backups and this will put everything in /system and /data back to stock. If you currently have stuff on your phone you want to keep make the /data backup data before step 1 and system after. Note that some roms especially the dearma's roms you will have to relfash the stock DE03 as they change other files that the backup wont fix and are incompatible with the stock OS

3. Download your rom of choice or make your own at the sdx kitchen http://www.sdx-downloads.com/custom/

4. Drop this file in the root of your sdcard and flash it using recovery mode. (boot to recovery, apply zip from sdcard, chose the file you want install)

Note: Any of the 'current' kernels are already rooted as well as any of the ROMs you find that other people have made.

Thank you guys... You all helped me go ahead with the stuff... However, got lots yet to learn... For one thing, I am stuck not being able to sync my contacts from gmail back to my phone... That was my mess up (I backed up only a few on my back up software, and for some reason, the rest at google gmail now wont resync...)
Yay... All the information to grasp! Its all worth it tho... I love a challenge...
Thanks again you all!:)

Drop this file in the root of your sdcard and flash it using recovery mode

Why my SDCard not show on my file roster in my computer?
I have a stinking feeling that "My Backup" application renamed the folder...
Can I rename it SDCard? coincidentally, I downloaded and installed Root Explorer, but SDCard folder is correctly named there... I can't manipulate its files cause it tells me my phone is not rooted yet... I am one frustrated Moment user!:thinking:

Sounds like you're figuring it out on your own. ;)

As you're realizing, it isn't rocket science. So is everything working correctly now?

Pretty much I would say...ovrrdrive, These days I am trying to figure out the rocovery console so I can get rid of programs and data I don't want. When I use the Root Explorer, I am still unable to uninstall stuff, it tells me the app is in r/o status... But I am sure I'll figure it out soon.
Thanks again!:)

The joys of Trial and Error ;). One tip that will help you out greatly, check the dates on the original posts of anything you are looking at as things changed drastically in the last month or so making stuff that was tedious and confusing a breeze. Especially after the 2.1 update.

Yes indeed. Very good tip... I was reading and using stuff that "was" or rather "is" ancient! lol... That caused me probs...
Thanks for the heads up dntesinfrno!:)
