will the hero work with earbuds that have a mic that go through the headphone jack or will it only work through the usb? Looking at my regular headphones that has the 3-pole jack, but all the ones with the mic ("iphone compatible") have 4. will the 4pole fit or no?

Unfortunately not the case. I went through at least 6 pairs of headphones w/mic before I found a set that actually worked. You could always get sound, but the mic would not work.

I guess you'll have to do your own trial and error.

I have used stereo/mono OEM blackberry earbuds, OEM apple earbuds, macally iPhone earbuds, and Shure I2C-M earbuds(fantastic sound for the $) with my hero, they all work beautifully. Like I said in my earlier post, if you plug it in, and get a headset icon, not a headphone, it recognizes that there is a microphone, so if you're in a looking an a brick & mortar, try before you buy...if you can. Be weary of some old nokia headsets, they use a 4 conductor connector and will not work.

I can use any standard headphone w/mic and works just fine. Cheap ones to expensive ones. at dollar stores crap to top brands.

I know, seems crazy. I plugged in some Sony's straight from BestBuy, got the icon up top with the mic showing, and nothing. Same thing with other brands that same day.
Plugged in the stock mic and headphones from my wife's Moment, and it worked just fine.

I guess I got lucky and found some on the first try. These work great. Amazing sound, too.

NEW V-Moda Vibe Duo Gunmetal Rouge iPhone earphones - eBay (item 230461155528 end time Jul-10-10 19:39:56 PDT)

I absolutely love the V-Moda Vibes! It's so odd that so many people have a love/hate relationship with them: "Too much bass", "not enough bass", etc. With these, it's all about getting them to fit properly for the best sound. I'm not one to give much credence to "breaking in" speakers, but these buds definitely do need breaking in for the best sound.

Also, these are wired for iPhone which means they will work properly with the Hero as both use the same pinout. So, anything designated as compatible with iPhone should work with the Hero.

V-Moda is definitely a sleeper brand for earbuds!
I actually have the Vibes and the Duo and the Duo definitely tone down the bass, and sound better, overall. The Vibes are fun when mowing the lawn, though!

I had been under the impression that the Duo was the exact same driver and design as the Vibes and they just added the mic capability. There is a difference then?

Edit: Just did some googling and found this from a review from a Mac site:

We like V-Moda’s Vibe earphones (4 out of 5 stars), with their rich midtone reproduction, crisp high-range sounds, and punchy bass. Fortunately, V-Moda didn’t mess with a good thing when it released the Vibe Duo, a headphone/headset for the iPhone. The Vide Duo takes V-Moda’s Vibe earphones, attaches a mic to them, and uses an iPhone-friendly connector.

Who knows...

I think I have the same pair. Cost about $35? The mic doesn't work but the sound is great.

The issue with iPhone earbuds is the shape of the plug. Many iPhone-compatible earbuds have a plug with a fairly wide base that prevents it from fully seating in the Hero's socket, which is located on a curved part of the phone. You get sound but no mic function. I found one at Walmart for about $10 that fully seats but unfortunately I'm away from home and don't have access to the packaging that would remind me of the brand. I'll post again when I get home in a few weeks.

This makes sense to some degree. But then would there not also be issues with L/R audio not working if not inserted fully?
