Hotspot or PDAnet

Just curious as I'm trying to figure out what plan to get in advance. Who here will use one of these options and which one? I'm guessing the main difference (besides saving $210 a year and having no 2gb cap) is PDAnet is wired and hotspot is wireless? I don't see that as a negative since you'd probably want to charge the X while in hotspot mode anyway.

For anyone that has used PDAnet before - does it work well? Ie, would the speeds, connectivity etc be the same between the official hotspot feature and PDAnet?

I have a VZW wireless card right now (so I can go online while on the road) on a month-to-month contract that costs $59 a month!! I'm going to be canceling that when I get the X!!

the free version of pdanet only allows you to use HTTP traffic (i.e. port 80) after the demo period (30 days) expires.

it does work very well in my experience, the wifi tether for android also works well but really drains the battery. I've found that most times when I'm using the free wifi tether, I've got my phone plugged into my computer anyways to charge it or rather keep the batter from draining too quickly.

It's like only $20 one time fee for pdanet, that should answer your question there. Also depends on how much data you will do, if you do a lot it will raise a flag possibly.

Thanks guys, it sounds like the PDANet is the way to go. The max I've ever used on my laptop card is about 1.5GB/month. I'll try it atleast!

I read some review somewhere where he said the X hotspot feature (the official one) worked very well, but that it was not as fast as the stand alone MiFi. So I'm not sure how performance will be compared to a MiFi or laptop card, but I'll find out

i have a droid and use pdanet. if you have a windows 7 pc get connectify and turn yo0ur pc into a hotspot using pdanet and phone as connection. Your ps3/xbox can even use your connectify connection. Go check it out!!!!!!!!!! i can connect all my devices.

I have gone from carrying a PCMCIA verizon 3G card to a USB verizon 3G card to a laptop with builtin verizon 3G card to now where I use my Droid as my 3G connection.

I'm on call 24x7 for work and need the ability to remote desktop into the server farm I manage, so I never leave home without a laptop and my Droid.

The speed is sufficient for 5 or so RDP sessions.
