I'm trying to call my contacts with a long press on the search button. It picks up my words just fine, but all it does is google search. For example i was trying to order lunch from a local sub joint that i have saved in my contacts as "Marcellos". So I said "call marcellos" and it went straight to google web search for the terms "call marcellos". I could see no option on the screen to call that contact.

Use the "Voice Dialer" application, not the Google voice search.

Yup, I've definately got that to work, but I could have sworn that I've read in multiple threads that you could do it from a search button long press. The "navigate to" command works from the search button long press just fine. It would be nice to get this working because it saves me a trip to the home screen or applications tab when I want to call a contact.

Okay, I didn't hear that. As you said, it would be nice to perform the command without navigating to the home screen. Keep me updated if you figure it out.

After trying more contacts, it works sometimes. Other times, even with very simple contact names, (like john brown) it hears what I'm saying perfectly but ignores the fact that there is a contact with an exact match and goes straight to google search

Edit: "Call Patty" worked once. It went straight to dialing. On a second attempt it did not dial and instead went straight to a google search for "call patty". Also tried "Tony", "Adam", "Mom", "Dad", "Holly" among others all with the google search result. the "sometimes" above is really only "one time".

When I first got my android, I loaded it up with my 2000+ contacts.

Some were from one gmail account, some from another.

It did the voice search/"Call" fine

after a few days, I noticed that it stopped working. But a few things had happened in that time.

1) I had changed my "registered/default" gmail account by resetting the phone and then using my second gmail account
2) I had loaded a ton of apps.

So I tried to figure out what the problem was.

I reset my phone several times, but then I found out that the droid would always reload all the applications, making it harder to debug the problem.

But with all my applications removed, it still had the problem. Then I noticed something. It was finding "some" of my contacts with the "call" command.

I found out they were the ones associated with my "main" gmail account on this phone. (which was synching with the phone)

So, now I have placed all my contacts in my main account, and it seems to be working. It may be a coincidence, but I'm just telling you my experience with this problem.

Voice search is very helpful when driving.
