so after being a HUGE coward about it, i read and read and read and finally flashed a custom kernal and ROM from SDX rom builder.

so i only have 2 questions so far...

1. if i install a premade custom ROM (lightning, dream etc.) that gets rid of 'bloatware' is there anyway i can get something liek sprintnav back? if so, how...?

2. another problem i have noticed is that after custom rom is installed, when i plug my phone into my computer, the drivers come up Samsung ANDROID instead of the sph-900 or whatever and says it is unable to install correctly, however when i flash again, the updater recognizes that it is connected.

so my real second questino is, how do i get it to recognize the sd card so i can load a custom animation and live wallpapers and put stuff like media on it. it dosent give me the little usb icon to mount the SD when i plug it in...

so....... ?????

Most likely what has happened is usb debugging was turned on by the rom.

menu>settings>application>development

It is possible to reinstall sprint nav by running the apk for it, should be backed up to the sdcard, if not it can be downloaded from sdx (you will probably have to enable apps from unknown sources to install once again under the application options. Personally i just use google nav, it integrates directly with google maps and seems to locate faster than sprint nav. Plus you dont have to log in.

Personally i dont use other peoples roms, i would rather make my own. Head on over to sdx-developers and click on the rom builder link at the top. There is also a rom board over there and anything the rom does/deletes is 'usually' listed there.

that is what i did initially... however, there is a limited boot pic/animation selection and i dont know about alot of the options on some of them (ARM upgrades and some of the launcher stuffs)

Also.. do i have to flash the kernal everytime i load a custom rom or can i just load and boot from recovery and not have to wipe my phone every time.

Some roms contain kernels, others dont. You can always check the kernel under menu>settings>about phone the kernel name will show under build number. Also some roms the developers recommend a fresh 'base' while others are ok to flash on top of the current rom. Be wary that flashing roms on top of others can lead to performance issues due to files left behind or modified by previous installations that may interfere or be imcompatible with other roms. Always backup your /data folder in the recovery just in case.

No, now that you have a recovery installed you can just apply the .zip or zimage files from the recovery menu.

Assuming you've installed an alternate recovery when you rooted. Put the .zip file of the rom you want to flash to in the root directory of the sd card. Power off the phone (pull battery or hold down power key). Press the volume down, red end/power key and green answer key at the same time and you should boot into recovery. Select apply zip, select the file you want to flash and follow the directions. Flashing takes like 5 min mostly waiting for boot. Joeykrim is ooooooold stuff.
