How are apps saved?

Are apps saved directly to the device or are they stored on your account? For example, I'm going to need to exchange my phone in because i think my battery if fault, I can't get past 10 hours with even no use at all. So woud I have to exchange batteries or just the phone?

And if I exchange phones, will I have to re-download and do everything I've done so far on this one?

You probably just have to exchange batteries.

Unless they've changed something with 1.6 or 2.0 Android connects your marketplace downloads with the handset, not your google account.

You can do a few things to help yourself moving to a new phone (if you have to do that).

MyBackup
Good for backing up most of what's on your device, there's even a free version. I recommend downloading it the day you're going to switch from one phone to another. It seems to be on some sort of trial.

AppManager
Backs up your Apps to your SD Card. Saving you trying to remember what you have and what you don't have. This is handy to have on tap anyway, as it allows you to backup your apps and save separate versions. One warning with this App, though. When you backup an app to your SD Card and then install it on the next device, you'll be bypassing the market, and thus you won't see Market updates for the apps installed from the SD Card. Downloading ATrackDog will help you find updates, though, and once you've downloaded one update from the market, your apps will show up again in the market download section, and you'll be able to see when they need updating again. ATrackDog is good for finding non-market apps.

BookmarkBR
Can alphabetize current bookmarks and back them up on the SD Card so you don't have to go remembering all those pages when you get the new device.

Between these apps, I've been able to do factory resets and even change devices with only a minor hassle as opposed to having to set up everything from scratch, which could take days.
