Ok I have not seen any thread on this subject so here goes:
The main reason I rooted my X10 was being in the UK on the 3 network and knowing they are very bad at updates and my phone was on R1***14 when other UK phones where on 16.
Also I am a very heavy phone user and was sick of my battery lasting around 6 hours of what I would call medium use and this was with everything turned off and without 3g, wifi, GPS the phone was no longer smart and was of less use to me than my last phone which I loved (LG KC910). Also I wanted to get rid of the apps on the phone that I will never use like Moxier, track ID, face recognition and why would I need other languages on my phone?
So main reasons: Lack of updates through 3, longer battery life, louder in call volume. Other reason: Getting rid of the crap I dont want on there.
I was very concerned about screwing up my phone doing the root and losing out on the HD update that comes out soon and even the update to 2.?. Well the rooting process took around 20 minutes total and was a breeze to do following the 3 step guide on XDA but you have to pick some of the apps you want to remove but this is not hard and there are video guides on how to do the whole thing.
Will I still get the HD update and 2.whatever update? Well yes as you can un-root the phone and roll back to an original state but I'm sure the pro's on XDA will bring out a way to implement them into the root soon as they come out. Also once the boot loader is cracked they will start making custom ROMS and then anything is possible (well almost).
Was there any change after root?
Hell yeah! But a lot is more down to have R2BA023 than the root but I now have no crap on there I dont want and can even add a few apps that require root.
My battery life has gone through the roof now! I have also instaled an app called SetCPU so when the screen is locked the phone is set to run the CPU at a bare minimum and even after activating the phone I have the CPU capped at 1/3 of its maximum and I have had no issues with the phones performance. I playing a game I just go to the desk top widget and slide the bar up so the CPU can run at 1.2gig and it does make games run smoother.
As said before the root I would be lucky to get 6 hours life out of the phone. Now I run 3g all day with timescape updating every 30 minutes, BBC new feed refreshes every 5 minutes and the facebook widget updates continuously, I surf for around 3 hours and can spend an hour or 2 talking on the phone with around 10-20 texts a day. Along with running GPS apps like Speedview and Google directions, a few pictures and the odd bit of video and around 10-20 emails.
Does it sound louder?
Yes it does.
Again this is due to the 23 update than the root, but my mate who owns the Desire was very impressed by the sound quality of the X10. It was not as loud as the Desire but the sound is much nicer and as for the in call volume... I teach down the beach in winds over 30mph at times and my old LG would struggle to be heard over the wind noise but with the X10 I can here people on the phone a lot better.
So there you have it my reasons for rooting and what my experiences of it are, I have no intentions on going back and the root was easy and as long as you sync your phone book with Sony or google and I used Astro file manager to back up all my apps and even all my pictures and video was untouched by the root.

Oh and I have been a medium phone user to day but still done around 2 hours browsing and a few emails and I unplugged my phone at 8am today and according to the app Spare Parts my phone has 64% battery left at 6:10pm before the root I would have had to either stop using the phone or it will have died around 1pm without any data being on and all widgets disabled .
So yes Im a happy bunny.
EDIT: After rooting there will be an issue of viewing all apps on the market, a few I can think of are Myplayer, Death Star clock, Sling bx and some paid apps. There is now a patch on XDA that takes 30 seconds from pluging the phone in to unplugging it and the market is 100% again.

and some progs do run slower on the phone now. Also is there a place where I can find out when the update is avalible to me as this is the one thing I cant seem to find via google. (T-mobile in UK)
