Root Benefits of rooting the X10

Ok I have not seen any thread on this subject so here goes:

The main reason I rooted my X10 was being in the UK on the 3 network and knowing they are very bad at updates and my phone was on R1***14 when other UK phones where on 16.

Also I am a very heavy phone user and was sick of my battery lasting around 6 hours of what I would call medium use and this was with everything turned off and without 3g, wifi, GPS the phone was no longer smart and was of less use to me than my last phone which I loved (LG KC910). Also I wanted to get rid of the apps on the phone that I will never use like Moxier, track ID, face recognition and why would I need other languages on my phone?

So main reasons: Lack of updates through 3, longer battery life, louder in call volume. Other reason: Getting rid of the crap I dont want on there.

I was very concerned about screwing up my phone doing the root and losing out on the HD update that comes out soon and even the update to 2.?. Well the rooting process took around 20 minutes total and was a breeze to do following the 3 step guide on XDA but you have to pick some of the apps you want to remove but this is not hard and there are video guides on how to do the whole thing.

Will I still get the HD update and 2.whatever update? Well yes as you can un-root the phone and roll back to an original state but I'm sure the pro's on XDA will bring out a way to implement them into the root soon as they come out. Also once the boot loader is cracked they will start making custom ROMS and then anything is possible (well almost).

Was there any change after root?

Hell yeah! But a lot is more down to have R2BA023 than the root but I now have no crap on there I dont want and can even add a few apps that require root.

My battery life has gone through the roof now! I have also instaled an app called SetCPU so when the screen is locked the phone is set to run the CPU at a bare minimum and even after activating the phone I have the CPU capped at 1/3 of its maximum and I have had no issues with the phones performance. I playing a game I just go to the desk top widget and slide the bar up so the CPU can run at 1.2gig and it does make games run smoother.

As said before the root I would be lucky to get 6 hours life out of the phone. Now I run 3g all day with timescape updating every 30 minutes, BBC new feed refreshes every 5 minutes and the facebook widget updates continuously, I surf for around 3 hours and can spend an hour or 2 talking on the phone with around 10-20 texts a day. Along with running GPS apps like Speedview and Google directions, a few pictures and the odd bit of video and around 10-20 emails.

Does it sound louder?

Yes it does.

Again this is due to the 23 update than the root, but my mate who owns the Desire was very impressed by the sound quality of the X10. It was not as loud as the Desire but the sound is much nicer and as for the in call volume... I teach down the beach in winds over 30mph at times and my old LG would struggle to be heard over the wind noise but with the X10 I can here people on the phone a lot better.

So there you have it my reasons for rooting and what my experiences of it are, I have no intentions on going back and the root was easy and as long as you sync your phone book with Sony or google and I used Astro file manager to back up all my apps and even all my pictures and video was untouched by the root.

If you have rooted your phone please add your own opinions and if you have any questions ask away and Im sure someone will have answers for you :)

Oh and I have been a medium phone user to day but still done around 2 hours browsing and a few emails and I unplugged my phone at 8am today and according to the app Spare Parts my phone has 64% battery left at 6:10pm before the root I would have had to either stop using the phone or it will have died around 1pm without any data being on and all widgets disabled .

So yes Im a happy bunny.

EDIT: After rooting there will be an issue of viewing all apps on the market, a few I can think of are Myplayer, Death Star clock, Sling bx and some paid apps. There is now a patch on XDA that takes 30 seconds from pluging the phone in to unplugging it and the market is 100% again.

@Gurba From what I have read the root makes impossible to brick your phone plus I did it and I feel proud when I hit "Ctrl-Alt-Del" so it cant be hard, and as I said I just backed up all my apps using Astro file manager. To make it even easier open Astro and press menu=more=preferences=home screen icons= enable SD card.

This will put an icon on your desktop and then open it and its clear how to backup your apps to the SD card, then after rooting go to the market and install Astro again and then follow the above to get the icon on your desktop and select install apps and then its just a case of clicking yes to every app you want re-install from the SD card.

@john, I can only guess the improvement is from the ***23 as the root does nothing apart from allowing access to remove apps and a few other things that root privileges allow like SetCPU. Look over on XDA as I belive there is a way to unbrand and add ***23 but I rooted as I wanted more space for apps that I want on my phone not what Sony thinks I should have.

Cool did you run the market fix?

And now spend the next 2 weeks+ configuring the phone to how you want it :)

Yep ran that lol
and put phone back to how it was before root (app wise and widgets etc) as im new to this whole root thing im not sure whats out there i can use etc, but on thing im a bit confused on is when the offical update comes out can I update my rooted phone with it or am I stuck with the root now. I ask cos Im happy with the speed and battary increase from my root but don't like the fact my camera keeps dieing since root :( and some progs do run slower on the phone now. Also is there a place where I can find out when the update is avalible to me as this is the one thing I cant seem to find via google. (T-mobile in UK)

@Oct_7 ??? OK ya lost me? I'm not an idiot but then again I'm not that technical when it comes to what you asked :)

Powerkitter,

I am referring to the options available when you want to setup an WiFi access point that uses WPA- EAP (WPA Enterprise, instead of WPA Personal). Currently on my X10, the only type available for me to use is TLS. I need to use PEAPv0/MSCHAPv2, instead of TLS, and I was told that PEAPv0/MSCHAPv2 is already supported in Android 1.6

@morpheus try running the root again as I have done mine a couple of times now and have had the odd little hiccup but nothing since the last root.

@gurba, I'm on my phone so will hyper link later, but the removal is the hard part sort of. Go to folder 3 of the root and open it then on the icon called clean up (I think I'm at the pub) the you have to right click it and click edit. When it opens you need to go to xda root page the link above and scroll down and you will see a huge load code that looks scarry!

The code you see on xda is the uninstall codes, simply copy and paste the codes to the apps you wish to remove in to the clean me folder you have open in edit mode. Now you have done this simply press save and close everything.

Now enable debugging, connect your phone and run step 3 again this will get rid of the apps. But be careful on what you remove, there is a link on the root page to a guide on how to remove the apps and a list of what each code removes.

Back home now, Gurba can you do me a favour?

I was just running through it on my laptop and phone and stupidly clicked save on the wrong part :)

Can you open "Step 3 folder" then on the "Run me" command click edit then copy and paste the code to here?

I can copy it back in and then I wont have to down load the whole "Root folder" as Im on a dongle :(

Removing the apps is a lot easier than it seems honest. If you can copy and paste the code from the Run me" comand for me then its just as easy to add apps to be removed from the "Cleanup" command.

Thanks in advance :)

Read through this thread and it even gives you a video (I followed it and paused it as I went, and it also gives you a list of the codes and what app it removes from the phone some should be left in like:

@adb shell rm /system/app/DrmProvider* - Provides DRM functions, needed to access media files (including ringtones)

This is the only reason I say be careful with what you add to the code but remember if you relly screw up part 3 then you can just download a good version and start over :)

EDIT (due to Stella) :Link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714021

It needs to be in debugging mode and you need to add the device ID into the folder like for part 1 and 2.

I just plug in with debug enabled and the open the "Step 3" command and it should just ask you to press any button and it should do its thing?

But I'm running blind as I cant perfrm it to see if there is any little bits Im missing as I messed up the code in the "Step3" folder for the run me command.

Also you are using the main icon for the operation?

The windows command "STEP3" not the "Runme" or "Cleanup" command.

You need to run the "Step3" command not the other two "Step3" runs both of them and they work together via using "Step3"

I will help you if you help me ;) well Im giving you the answer anyway but can you please go into folder3 and open the "Runme" folder in edit mode and copy and paste the code here please?

I messed it up and I am on a dongle and the download times out on me every time all I need is the code to copy and paste into my "Runme" in edit mode to get it working again. please help :)

OK the only thing I can think of is to download the whole root folder again and run "Part3 again and this time edit the "Cleanup" command a little less vigorously and it should be back there, if not you might need to run the whole root again but it does not take that long to do.

Now please copy and paste that code :D

Ok. I guess I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Is this what you're looking for?

@echo off
@echo ######################################
@echo # DEVICE IS RESTARTING..... #
@echo # AFTER IT BOOTS ENABLE USB DEBUGING #
@echo # PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE ROOTING #
@echo ######################################
pause
@adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system

@adb shell rm /system/app/VoiceDialer*

Thanks for the help so far. :)
