Ok guys, which one to choose from Sprint?

The:
HTC Hero
Samsung Moment
Samsung Instinct


I excluded the EVO, I refuse to pay the premium for 4G service, even though it's a superior device.

What do you guys think (other than the EVO) is the best Android phone that Sprint offers here in the States?

Currently for 3G Android on Sprint, I say Hero. It's really up to you though. You may also want to hold out a little longer and see what else is coming right around the corner.

Actually, the hero is old, and near EOL. The Intercept (Moment2) is due out (today i think?) soon. It's faster than the hero, better screen, and a DTV tuner, which may or may not matter to your. Also, no dust under Samsung screens like with the hero. So no, the hero is not better, it is in fact, worse.

The Hero might not be better than Intercept, but its way better than the Moment, a little dust under the screen doesn't compare to your airplane mode automatically turning on, plus the hero's sense ui is way better than stock android UI, and the Hero jus looks better and lighter and a lot less bulky and plasticky, overall the Hero is Way better than the moment

And aside from the Airplane mode bug, (which usually doesn't happen unless you fuss with WiFi alot, usually) The Moment is still superior to the Hero.

The rest of your crap you posted, well that's called opinion. Last time I checked, opinion =/= fact, popular or not. And as the moment is going to be pulled from shelves soon, (as is the hero), and the Intercept is available for purchase, the Intercept would be the obvious choice for a non-4G phone.

Although it would be nice if Sprint put out a phone that didn't have 4G and similar specs to the Epic/EVO.

Your Opinion =/= fact.

All qwerty sliders are built for heavy text use. But it's not limited to that. Are all Blackberries suddenly cutsie tween phones now too?

Some of us heavy users prefer the keyboard to hammer out long emails, and the web browsing experience is better, because the virtua-board doesn't take up half the screen while typing comments, urls, passwords, etc.

And the moment itself, is SOLID. Guess what the hero is made out of? Oh yeah, plastic. I've dropped my moment on solid conrete end over end, I just now got my first chip after dozens of drops on varying surfaces. No case either.

In closing, if someone is looking for advice on a phone, don't just spew out one is better than the other based on YOUR personal preference. They probably don't even care what you like. They are more interested, in facts. My moment runs circles around the hero, and the intercept will too.

Nobody likes Samsung support, the people I know that have a Moment (3 people) all have more problems than anyone I know with a hero (7 people) and wish that they had picked the hero over the moment. Also reps at both Best Buy and a Sprint store highly suggest the hero over the Moment as it is "much less problematic, and of higher build quality". Besides, everyone knows HTC phones are built like rocks, I've dropped mine twice, on pavement, and not even a scuff on it, no case here either.

Guys the discussion has been great, please keep it coming. It's the reason I posted here, it seemed as if there were some pretty knowledgeable people here to help me out.

Thanks for pointing out the Hero being an older model, I did not know that. I've read about how Android 1.5 has been out for a while and 2.1 or 2.2 is right around the corner. The Intercept sounds like it may be the way to go. I'll have to look into that one some more.

I really wish they would offer an EVO without the 4g service, or a way to not have it enabled. I refuse to bend over and pay the premium price for 4g service, 3g is plenty fast for me for now.

I think the people with EVO's would disagree with you. Since the screen is coming off the phone OUT OF THE BOX and all that.

Froyo is Android 2.2, which niether the hero nor moment will receive. There is a slight chance the intercept will receive froyo, as it is a "new" phone.

The intercept may be the way to go for you, I personally dislike sliders and have heard nothing but bad about Samsung support. Ultimately, its up to your personal preference, just wait till the intercept is out then play with all three at a Sprint store and then decide.

But people preaching about Samsung support is kind of hypocritical, don't you think? I mean, HTC and Moto are no better.

In fact, The moment, despite being released nearly a month later, received it's 2.1 update before the hero. AFIAK The GSM hero still has no update.

It defintely is a Moment 2. There are some new/revamped features though, like an external memory card slot (don't have to take the back off) and more buttons on the face of the phone below the touchscreen. Also the keyboard has been been slightly redone to make it a little more user friendly.

Looks like the flash is gone from the camera, so that's a step backwards. Pretty odd move on that one.

I just spoke to a Sprint rep, and as he admittedly said he doesn't know for sure but he "thinks" the Intercept may have an upgraded processor over the Moment, but that's purely speculative.

Pretty sure that one is wrong too, but not 100%, considering a Rev0 phone hasn't been released in god knows how long.

Rev0 is the first generation of CDMA 3G. Rev A is the second generation of the 3rd Generation, is what current devices use.

I believe the BB Curve 8530 is a Rev. 0 device. That is the latest one I can think of off the top of my head.

If you're planning on holding onto the device(s) for a full 2-yr contract, don't buy any of these. Go monthly with your current plan until you get a device that either has Android 2.2 already on it or will be upgradeable. The timelines and order for upgrade are a joke due to the carrier and OEM involvement, but it's not going to feel good to have a phone that will not be upgraded. Froyo and subsequent Android releases will be that much of an improvement.

Ironically, it seems that you have an aversion to the Evo for the $10 premium. It's definitely going to be something common for all phones that are Wimax-capable. You'll want Froyo on Wimax so don't rule Evo or other Wimax-devices out so quickly.

I expect Sprint will simply repackage their plans to basically be low+mid range devices keeping plans similar to now. The top range phones will then all have plans with an additional $10 built into the plan.

I'm hoping that the $10 difference was Sprint anticipating Froyo and future releases giving the ability to hotspot for multiple devices as a better/cheaper charge than the current $30 hotspot fee. I wouldn't bet on that, but I can hope it. That would be worth the premium alone even though I'd still rarely use it.

IMO, the Hero is old and has it's problems, the Moment is junk! (I had one), the Instinct is not an Android but the INTERCEPT (Moment 2) is and only time will tell if it's any better than the Moment. The EVO and the upcoming Epic are the best Andriod phones Sprint has although, like you, I am not paying $10 a month for 4g when I can't even use it! I say sit on your upgrade for a bit if you can wait.

Of it is between those listed, i would go with the Hero. I personally don't like slide out keyboards.
