How many people are buying this immediately upon release?

Is anyone else feeling hesitant about buying this so soon? I mean yes, it is ATT's best android phone to be released, but the galaxy s is going to all carriers, not making it much of an ATT exclusive. Is it possible ATT could release an exclusive, powerful phone, or do people believe the aero and streak are all they will put out this year?

The only reason I'm feeling hesitant on buying it on the first day is this. I want my phone to be exclusive to my carrier so that I can have something unique and not just a variant of a main phone.

I may get it on the first day, it's all down to how I like the phone after playing with it.

The fact this phone is on every carrier is what is making me think of getting it. Until now Samsung has had a terrible track record of supporting phones. But with this phone on so many they would burn so many bridges they would need to get out of the cell phone business. Secondly since it is being released so many places the hacking community will be very strong. Which will be able to get rid of anything that AT&T does to slow the progress of this phone. And lastly I think it is really the best bet for a good android phone on AT&T for now. The Streak is not a phone to me it is a mini tablet.
The other phone I am considering is moving to Verizon and getting a Droid X. Which is just a bit bigger than this phone but the Streak is .5 X 1 in bigger than the X so it is just too big to me.

Totally agree with you tsanuri. The fact that it is a device to be released on all carriers makes it a powerfully marketable hack-friendly phone- similar, but more so than the Nexus. We all know how much hack support the Nexus has received. I predict the Galaxy's will be the most hacked phone ever.
These are phones attainable on all carriers for a great price that just happens to have the most powerful processor and gpu available right now. Doesn't hurt that the screen is beautiful too.
I'm willing to accept a plasticky build and no flash for a phone that will provide a couple years worth of enjoyable Android treatment.

I'm stuck on an iPhone 3G right now, been waiting all year for the right Android phone. This one seems to be it, futureproof, and I gotta agree with everyone above that it being on all four major carriers does seem like a better thing, with likely little to no difference between the software making hacking and updates that much quicker/easier. I'm picking it up as soon as I'm off work Sunday!
I just wish these next six days would pass by quicker!

I think your assumption of AT&T getting power android devices is rather misplaced. I mean they thought the backflop and aria two very exclusive designs just for AT&T were great...

I think there will be another phone, perhaps our HTC Slider. And it may have the same stats as the phones that have been coming out all year. But the captivate will probably be the best featured/most powerful phone we get this year.

I went by the closest brick and mortar retail location last Friday and asked about the phone. The manager I talked to was pretty well informed about it (peruses Phandroid and Engadget) and here's what his take on the demo he got to play with.

1. Very lightweight but very solid. The case wasn't the best on the market but it appeared lightweight, solid and made with quality. I asked because of BGR's story about how it felt rather cheap. His comment was (and I tend to agree) everyone thinks that if it's plastic it really isn't well made. He said it felt better than a Droid Incredible, which he thought gets a bad rap. He says, plastic makes your radios work better. If you want top notch build quality, buy an iPhone 4.

2. Very quick. The demo he played with had Launcher Pro installed and it showed no lag. His opinion is that when the Froyo update comes out it will be very impressive. He said the Layar app was extremely fast and responsive and he noticed no lag when the 'galaxy' live walpaper was used. I don't know much about Layar but from what he described, it sounded pretty interesting. Gaming should be phenomenal.

3. The display. Yes, the pixel density on the iPhone 4 is fantastic. But he pointed out that the pixel density on the Super AMOLED display was also very high and for 99% of the people out there, "perfectly adequate." He said the real kicker with the display on the Captivate was the color and depth of the display. Colors really pop out and it gives a sense of depth to the phone that the Droid Incredible, Droid, iPhone 4, Evo 4G just don't have. Photos on the phoned looked as crisp and sharp as the images on his wife's EVO 4G (work phone- I asked.)

He was very knowledgeable and pretty up-to-date on Android and the various handsets. He's seen the Droid X and says the decision comes down to carrier. Both phones will fly with Froyo, both take great pictures, both have great displays (he prefers the SuperAMOLED), both can play games. He mentioned that the Droid X doesn't have the six-axis gyroscope that the Captivate has, nor the simulated surround sound.

He's hoping that he can show a demo before Thursday as he knows several people that will be jumping the AT&T ship to get a Droid X. Which I have an appointment on Thursday, 8am at Verizon for. I'd just really like to see this phone in-store before I jump to another carrier. I've seen the X, and played with it and it's pretty amazing. But I love the idea of the bright and clear screen and I love my music. Pink Floyd with the simulated surround sound? Nice.

I was at the Galaxy release event in NY a couple weeks ago and got to play with all the models. I spent most of my time with the Captivate since I am on AT&T. I had just updated my N1 to 2.2 that day so it was a fair comparison.

I will absolutely be picking up the captivate and probably selling my N1. The Hummingbird processor was so wickedly fast on 2.1 that it made mincemeat of my 2.2 N1. It ran 54FPS on my neocore test vs. 27FPS on my N1. Transitions were fast and smooth.

I plan to buy off contract so I have my return period if I want. My main concerns will be battery life and reception. Im dropping too many calls with my N1 and its frustrating. And NO, its not the network. Ive been on ATT for 5 years and all with Blackberries and I never dropped a call once in that time. It wasnt till I got the N1 that I started having dropped calls. So, if the Captivate works in that area then its definitely a keeper for me.

My Monday consists of tangents so far, so I'll lob one here. Anyone thinking of buying the iPhone 4 32 GB, selling it on eBay for $800-$900, and then buying the Captivate for the supposed $350 no contract price? You could take the difference and buy A LOT of accessories or other fun things.

I thought about doing this also but I just dont want to extend my contract another 2 years, I like being free and clear. Its a big incentive but how much longer do you think people will be paying a premium for the I4G? Soon enough the excitement will wear off and Ill be the guy with the phone not being able to get rid of it anymore for more than I paid for it.
