Root mods..perhaps we need a sticky thread

Mods,

IMHO we have alot of new users that are rooting their phone just for the sake of saying that they have rooted their phone.

We have seen this before with other phones, not unlike the iphone, but the reasoning behind JBreaking an iphone, in hindsight, is crystal clear. We were trrying to get more performance out of the platform vs the crap the apple and itunes were offering. Most of us have lived and learned through that process and want to put it into practical application here with the evo hyc 4g platform as well.

That being said its obvious that this is the main driver behind rooting the evo as well...

It may best serve the interest of our/your users, new and old, to detail out the pros and cons of rooting the evo.

If this already articulated somewhere in the forum I would say, i stand corrected and pardon me.

If not lets ask one of our senior posters/mods to offer that advice up and sticky the post appropriately.

We want to ensure we capture the converts and keep them. We Can always cull the clan later.

As a first poster to my own crap i would say that the main reason for me, rooting the evo is so that i can flash different roms, set them up the way i like them and the back them up and reload them later if i want to check out a new rom or feature.

I am a junior user but this is my main reason for rooting.

Thx for listenning and hope others comment on pros and cons as well.

The tone of the OP is odd. Cull the clan?

I think everyone knows the benefits of rooting.
1) Nandroid. Making full backups of ones phone, thats something I do for my computer and something I want for my portable, pocketable computer.
2) Battery life. Being able to control the processor has gotten me much greater battery life.
3) Removing bloatware. I do like Sprint TV, but some of the other crud I dont care to see in my app drawer. We all know android does a great job of managing its resources but I can't see how its a bad thing to remove things I'll never use from the phone that will sit in memory, taking up resources and space that will keep me from being able to have more apps.
4) My own interest. Since getting a Hero, the possibilities of this platform have become a legit hobby of mine. After 8 months of reading everything I can on it, I have forgotten more about phones than most people will ever know, and im still a damn noob in my estimation. I want to learn more, I like to solve problems, with the right resources and advice I can.

Those are the big ones for me. #5 would probably be mobile hotspot, but honestly thats the only one I'd ever do to 'say i could', as you might say, as a stupid party trick. I really don't have a need for it, since I have a paid version of pdanet.

There WAS a 'why root?' thread but I don't know where it went.

Everyone should just accept that the popularity of android (which we WANT) is going to bring noobs en masse to this concept and we ought to help them, because at one point we were all helped. I got huge help because by the time I rooted my Hero, flipz had made it incredibly simple. Right now its not so simple.

On a more altruistic note, I've been able to help a great many people who would never know the tweaks and tricks to making an android phone sing. My family, friends and coworkers have all benefited from things I've learned from here and xda and their phones functionality is far better for it. I feel invested in making sure they have a great android experience. That doesn't necessarily mean rooting, but all the research it takes to do it uncovers many a gem that a novice would never know.

I would just sticky a link over to the XDA evo 4g development thread. This seems to be stay a bit more up to date as far as updates, stickies, wikis, roms, radios... and such. I come and check this site out to give advice and help out but I do the majority of my rooting, rom, kernel research over at XDA. I'm not trying to knock this site. The Stickies in this sub forum are a little dated though and could confuse people if they are not kept up to date.
