I know there are battery and or battery gauge issues. I don't know if this is related or not. The phone when being idle for an extended period of time, with the screen off and no usage, either turns off and freezes or just freezes.

I have had this happen three times. Twice the phone was set down during a movie. When I picked it up, the screen would not come on when I hit the red button. I held down the red button as if trying to turn the phone on, and nothing. I sat the phone down once during a nap and fortunately woke up on my own, the alarm didn't go off because the same thing happened. The only way to get the phone back on was to take the battery out and put it back in again. Then the phone started up fine.

I experienced this also. The first day with the phone went well except for the low battery life but we know that is to be expected. Then I went to bed and let the phone charge overnight.

I woke up in the morning and the phone wouldn't respond to anything and the screen was off. I had to take the battery out to fix it. Then at work it happened again. I had installed a ton of apps that I had previously on my Hero so I was a little concerned. However, I thought that maybe two apps may be causing this issue: Battery Graph and I had a battery widget running. I uninstalled both and ever since the phone has not locked up once.

If you don't have one of these (or both of these) installed may want to consider a factory reset. Set up some basic stuff (gmail sync etc) and try using the phone for a day or two and see if it continues to lock up.
