Its the 3G/4G radio. If wifi is on instead of those i'll get dramtically longer battery life. However I can deal with the no 4G(although it takes away from it being a 4G phone) but i need the 3G radio on because im only near wifi when im at home. which is useless because i can easily just charge it up at home.

Turning the 3G radio off doesnt seem to be a good option because if i want to check some email I have to turn it on just to do that.

So WHY does the 3G/4G radio use so much battery? can 3g/4g battery consumption be fixed with a software update? or would need a better hardware radio or something

any tweak to have 3G on but somehome make it use minimum amount of battery?

I know that the app Locale has a plugin that enables/disables the 4G radio. They may also have a plugin for enabling/disabling the 3G radio.

FYI, Locale is an app that dynamically controls a huge range of phone settings and capabilities based on various conditions such as Location, Battery level, Charging, BT connection, Time, and many others.

It's not a problem per se. Wifi is well known to consume much less power than 3G -- just imagine the power difference necessary to transmit a signal to your router 20 feet away versus a tower a half a mile away.

However, 3G power consumption isn't an issue unless you're constantly transmitting data. If you're experiencing severely short runtimes on your phone, I think the problem you really need to isolate is why it is your phone is drawing too much data.

My phone idling with no wifi (and thus on 3G) still can last through a day -- with full Gmail push. I however, have little else drawing data while idling. I think the last time I measured, the battery diminution overnight on 3G was only like 10-15% over 5-7 hours.

well i only sync a few things. Like i dont sync facebook contacts, but i do sync the updates, but have it on once every 4 hours. Same thing with this RSSS reader and twitter updates, have it set on once every 4 hours. So i dont know what else could be syncing say.... every 3min or something.
What programs could be constantly transmitting data? i took care of gtalk

The phone does not seem to care if about what you should sync, it will run programs and sync them with out your permission. It will also sync items like facebook, news, and friend stream even if you turn them off/disable them in the sync system. I have funneled the traffic coming from the phone, it will ping facebook, news, and friendstream, even if you do not have a facebook account or program running. It will also start programs like nfl, amazonmp3, and sprint tv to connect to their servers. Even if you never ran these program. Sprint has programed android to behave like this.

You're communicating with a tower that could be a few miles away, the phone needs wattage to do that, which will take power. As has been mentioned, WiFi requires less power as it's closer to you.

As for a tweak or a fix, that's really unlikely. You would have to reduce wattage, which would in turn reduce your 3G range. I wouldn't think that would be acceptable either.

I'm curious, how strong is your 3G signal? The weaker the signal, the more power the radio will consume which will also increase the rate at which the battery discharges.

If the things you have listed are syncing, it's because they aren't set properly. I have no need to sync things like Facebook and Friend Stream and my phone doesn't sync them. Would I love to remove them completely? Sure just to remove clutter. However they aren't harming my battery one bit just by being on the phone, because they aren't syncing.

The BIGGEST battery hog on the EVO is definitely Gtalk. I know it was talked about above, but in the app TALK, make sure you have the settings to NOT AUTOMATICALLY SIGN IN. Then press menu, SIGN OUT. If you do not uncheck auto sign-in, when Gtalk restarts itself, it will sign you in in the background.
Google Talk is responsible for most of battery short-lifes.

Tons of threads about this in the Battery section. When you are near WiFI turn that on. Also go to Menu then Settings then Wireless and Networks then Mobile Networks options then uncheck Enable always-on mobile. this will put 3g to sleep essentially when you turn the screen off after a few minutes. Occasionally a few programs will wake it to sync and you might have problems with Pandora and other music streaming. If you do just turn it back on but since I have unchecked this my battery life was drastically increased

The bad thing about disabling always-on mobile is that it will interfere with receiving push-based emails. This would be a really big deal for those who use their Evo for work. So disabling that may or may not be a viable option depending upon the circumstances.

Are you sure it's the 3G/4G radio, or apps in the background using the radio? I installed Advanced Task Killer (I know, they say they're bad) and saw consistent performance improvement no matter what I have on or off.

My battery would die every weekday be 9pm at the latest, but with Advanced Task Killer, it will go a full day and all night on one charge which is more than enough. I just want my phone to go a whole day.

Personally I think it's apps like Amazon MP3, NASCAR, Sprint Navigation and other Sprint/HTC crapware causing this. Kill those apps and my battery is the bomb.

Ok, going to try this one more time.

If you turn them off, remove the widget from the page, sign out, or never use them, they still try to sync in the background. It does not matter if you set them up wrong or not at all.

If you montitor the traffic going from and to the phone, those apps, connect and transfer regardless if you use them or not.

If they are running in the background and you do not stop them, they will use data regardless of settings, even if you never used the app before.

When I got the phone, the facebook app was installed as a widget. I removed it from the screen, went into sync and disablied it, because where I work forbids facebook.

Then I hook the phone to a 3g base station, and monitor the traffic going to and from the phone, once you connect to the internet, thefacebook app starts, connects to the facebook server. Regardless if you turn it on. If the app is off, it will turn itself back on and go to the server.

IF you visit a website with amazon or mp3 names on it. The mp3 app will turn on by itself, and connect to amazon. With out you doing anything.

If you turn off the sync option under settings, it still will turn on and try to sync regardless of settings.

There is nothing you can do to stop it (besides task killer), the apps will run. Regardless of settings.

Once you are done with the internet, these apps stay one and contiue to sync with the server host, regardless of settings.

Wow. I must have a magic Evo, because mine doesn't sync nor use battery from them syncing. Why? Because they're not doing that on my phone. I can leave my phone sitting on my desk, pick it up a couple of hours later with no change on the battery graph.

Guess I have a golden Evo. ;)

None of my services sync if I turn their respective syncing off.

Just because an app is cached and loaded, does not mean it is running. Don't make the assumption that if it's in a task manager app, that it is running.

If what you say is actually true and you're not just screwing up your tests, your EVO is broken/misconfigured. This is not how it works.
