Help So...when is the moment going to be obsolete?

I went from HTC hero to palm pre (hated the hero) and missed android so much I came back with a moment. I just got it on my b-day, June 25th, and then about 2 weeks or more later I find out it's not going to be updated anymore! :(

I think I am up for an upgrade in Jan, so we still have a way to go before I can even consider getting a new phone (with the upgrade), DH would kill me as he was the one who bought this one for me, from CL for my bday.

I was going to attempt to root my phone, because, really I don't care about having a newer phone just to have one, I like the moment so far. Rooting scares me TBH, lol. I'm afraid I'll brick my phone and then be out of a phone, period.

BUT...I will do it, when I need to, so when does everyone think I'll need to? I've seen some apps upgraded for 2.2, but they still work on 2.1, is it just NEW apps that I have to worry about? Apps that are created for 2.2 and above? I'm a bit confused.

I guess I don't understand much about rooting other than you can customize things and delete the stock apps from your pone. Can you still access the market? Download apps that are for non-rooted phones? etc. Sorry, I know I'm dumb when it comes to this subject, lol.

First of all, there is really nothing you can do software wise to brick these things that can't be undone. Secondly, you can do anything as root that you can do as user, you just get the added advantage that comes along with root access. Finally, yes at some point there will be an app you want that wont run on 2.1 but the biggest concern with no more updates is the persistent problems the moments have (data lockups, airplane mode bug and so forth) that can potentially be solved with these updates we not getting. The word from the devs over at SDX is pretty confident that once the Intercepts source code for 2.2 is realsed they will be able to port it to the moment as it is hardware wise an almost identical phone. They have already started working on it and have a semi-working (very basic, no ability to really use it normally) 2.2 on the moment. I have been and continue to be confident that we will have 2.2 soon enough, just not coming from samsung/sprint, hence the need for root.

Ok, lol, well I guess as soon as SDX releases it, I'll root (I have some research to do on it though, I know NOTHING about it), ROM's and kernels and tethering oh my! lol. I'm just nervous, for some odd reason. I mean I hacked into my palm pre pretty well, using the software and help/tutorials from the forum, but I think it's different than rooting. It allowed you to DL "homebrew" apps and tweak things in the phone like the battery icon and such. Rooting is a whole other ball game and it scares me!

But I would LOVE to get rid of the flipping Sprint apps on here, Moxier Mail is always opening on me in the background and I hate it. And I hate the icons in the tray for all the sprint apps I don't use.

Until then, I shall continue to use my moment as is. It's been fine for me, no issues so far (*knock on wood*) except for being a little laggy after I DL'd a ton of apps...had to go and clear all the cahes.

Rooting is extremely easy and very safe. Even if it messes up you can reflash the phone and it will be fine. With the custom ROM builder from SDX is it really easy to personalize the phone and remove the sprint apps you dont want. I was surprised just how much some of those apps slow down the phone.

I would recommend reading through some guides over at SDX, but it is definitely worth it to root the phone and install a custom kernel.

The kernel is what the OS is running off of. This gives the OS the ability to use certain aspects of a system, like SSSE3 extension on the Core series from Intel and the Darwin kernel for Os X. As well as other things like tethering. Actual rooting will not give you better performance, it's what you install on the phone that does, and all the options you can do with it rooted instead of not rooted. Like installing new themes, boot logos, or boot animations. Performance wise, there's jit. The biggest reason to root right now though, Android 2.2. It's highly possible that 2.2 can be ported to the Moment from the Intercept once it's released on the Intercept. I've had mine rooted since the day I got it when it was still 1.5. I use the meat kernel with Samdroid Froyo Jit, Burst LEO theme and the TouchWiz3 launcher, and it works great on my phone. Rooting gives better recovery options, and that's what you need to make the phone better. Hell, there are even fixes for the Moment from rooting. Such as the camera lag is fixed, 3d drivers are improved, live wallpapers are ported, even the data lock up issue is almost fixed. I've messed with 2 Android devices before, the G1 and the Droid. Out of the 3 I've rooted, the Moment has been the easiest.
Official Android DE03 2.1 with SDX custom recovery and BEYOND!

I'll say this though, if I had to choose all over again when I bought my Moment, I would have chosen the Hero over the Moment easily. Samsung has terrible support for their phones and software. If I could choose now, Evo for sure. Only reason I chose the Moment at the time, the Moment had a keyboard. Depending on how the Galaxy S phones turn out like the Epic 4g, the Moment might be the last Samsung phone I ever buy.

Essentially the same thing as rooting. Im not sure the OS on the palm but root access on a linux based system is comparable to administrator access on Windows. It is simply an elevated access that allows you to gain control over areas of the file system otherwise secured. The term 'homebrew' is just a slang for software created by someone other that the manufacturer of the product.

So far, no one has really answered the question you ask When is moment obsolete. The real answer is it won't ever be non usable, but only not up to date with the latest capabilities. But with the EPIC looming for release soon, That will make it even more out of date, Then the S2 series will make that out of date--it's a never ending sequence. But you should always be able to use the Moment for what it does well now. And even if Samsung/Sprint won't supply fixes, you can be sure the folks at SDX and here will be around to help. I'll look at the situation in early Nov when I qualify for new phone, but whatever I replace the moment with will give my wife the moment to use to replace her Rumour2 which is now doing everything she needs to do.
