Root Custom kernel WITHOUT SetCPU?

So I finally rooted my droid, installed BB 0.4 and from what I understand it comes with an 800 MHz kernel.
Fair enough but lets say I want 1 GHz.

I'm already noticing that I get slightly less battery life with this than with stock 2.1, so would the "low voltage" or "ultra low voltage" Chevy kernels provide me with more battery life?

I know I should probably get SetCPU, but I don't want to constantly have to manage clock speeds manually and I don't know what profiles to set / what's safe and what's not safe and whatnot.

If I DON'T install SetCPU, will the phone take care of it by itself and slow the clock down when it's not doing intense tasks and so forth? Is SetCPU really necessary with a kernel or is it just for extra control for super power users? :p

Thanks!

most people get better battery life with this rom.

ultra low = more battery if your phone can handle it. what might be best for your droid may not even work on others at all.

i only use set cpu to monitor my battery temps with this rom. i have read where some phone guides dont use it at all because pete designed this rom to scale your kernals output to match demand. meaning it drops to minimum power at idle and ramps up to your kernals maximum output when you need it. i use setcpu with other roms.

Thanks!
Yeah I can monitor the battery temp with OS Monitor which is free on the market.

What are good temperatures to have for the CPU and battery?
Having the phone idle, OS Monitor tells me the cpu is at 30 Celsius and the battery at 34 celsius. Is that safe?

Also could you define "handle it"? Meaning, it doesn't crash, or it won't boot? I installed Chevy's 1.0 GHz ULV kernel and it seems fine though I haven't really pushed the phone that hard yet.

right now the only thing that's really annoying me about Bugless beast is the pandora sound quality issue. It seems more compressed and less clear than before. :(

they say under 140 farenheit. but my phone has never gotten over 112 with this rom reguardless of kernal choice.

pandora thing is a 2.2 issue not a bb issue.

when charging and using your phone the battery starts to heat up. keep an eye on that. download quadrant to test out kernals and wifi tether!! great benefit of rooting imo!

Wait.. so is there a chance or likelihood that the phone could overheat while it's just sitting there charging? With this rom / kernel config?
I don't want to have to use setcpu just to operate my phone safely.

Thanks again for the informative response :)

I use BB V0.4 without SetCPU (I'm on Chevy's 1.1Ghz LV kernel) -- in fact, I've been using BB without SetCPU for the last several versions. I have my Droid plugged in a lot and I've never had an overheating issue.
