How valuable on Android phones do people with a trackball find them?

A lot of the newer phones, compared to the Nexus one don't seem to have a trackball. Is there anybody here with experience in similar phones with a trackball and without one?

How valuable was the trackball?

I like the track ball for e-mails, texting, and internet browsing.

Sometimes it is hard to touch in between 2 letters in which you want to change.

When you have the track ball, it is much easier to scroll in between the 2 litters in which I need to insert a character.

Also, when a link is very small on the internet, it is great to scroll down with the track ball instead of using your big finger to try and hit the correct link!

I love using a trackball, once I figured out all its uses. Its fall better to use it to move your text curser than the tap&drag method of the iphone. You can use it for precise copy and paste rather quickly. Its also very nice to use it in the car with google navigation because you don't have to hover your hand over the screen to select an option.

i have a moment with an optical button. is like a trackball but is flat and can also be pressed in to select. the moment also has a slide-out keyboard. the keyboard has arrows on it.

my point is, i have not touched the optical button AT ALL between the arrown and the touch screen. so with a touch only ohone i could see where the optical button would be a nice feature but trackballs break after a while.

I use my Nexus One trackball as mentioned above... mostly for text editing and clicking really tiny, bunched-together links (when I don't want to have to zoom in).

I use the trackpad on my Desire when editing text messages and emails.

I used to have a Hero with a trackball and I used that a lot. I use the trackpad on my Desire less because the touchscreen is so much better, but it's still very useful, and there are times I get pretty frustrated using my GFs SE Xperia X10 because it hasn't got one.

I'd definitely think twice about buying a phone without one.

Ditto using the trackball for fine selection but on the Nexus it's great for bringing the phone out of sleep with one hand instead of trying to find the power button.

how does this work? I always have to use the power button on the top of the phone.

There's a little app called Tedd's Droid Tools. Lets you answer the phone with various methods. Works on the Nexus perfectly.

Call Answering tools ON
Answer call with camera button OFF
Answer call with Track Ball press CHECK that one.

I think from what I hear that it's quite worth considering a phone with a trackball then. One thing that I would like to see is like on the Blackberry where a broken trackball is easy to replace.
