T-mobile forced me to pay $30 for Android Data

I have been a loyal T-mobile customer for 6 years and when upgrading my phone from a G1 to the Samsung Vibrant they increased the data price to $30/month when I previously payed $25/month.


Before upgrading the phone, I spoke to a T-mobile representative on the phone and she said that if I chose to upgrade to another android phone, the price would stay the same. However, when I went to Costco to upgrade, the system required us to add the $30 service before continuing, even though I already had the $25 service. They told me I could call t-mobile and negotiate this with them.

When I called T-mobile I wasn't told anything except "$30 is the new required price". If I already had a data plan, why would I have to pay more for the same one? When I previously used web-to-go on my Blackberry, I paid $5.99 (I think), and eventually they raised the web to go price to $9.99, but the price remained the same to me because that was the service I had purchased. Has anyone had a similar experience and was able to get their old data plan price returned?

I actually went the other way. I had a $30 data plan for my BB, which was reactivated a couple months ago.

When I called Retentions to get an upgrade deal, they gave me the phone for $149.99 and the Android data plan for $20. I was out of contract and have been with TMo since the Voicestream days (over 10 yrs).

Are you sure it's $20? I was told the same, but it's actually $25, check with the "my account" app on your phone to see the price.

As for the $30 data price, that's the one reason why I didn't go to third party stores. All the ads mentioned "must sign 2 year contract with $30 data plan." Are you perhaps on the loyalty plan or whatever they call it nowadays? If you are, you should be able to get it for $25. Call retentions and tell them about and that you are highly thinking of moving to another carrier because of this reason. See if that will work.

Thanks for the reply, but that's exactly what I did. I was very calm but very insistent that I would switch to Sprint because of their family data plans and Evo, but they still didn't go for it. And nope, I'm not on a loyalty plan.

What plan do you have? I thought it was $20 as well. I see their website shows $79 for unlimited everything no contract and $99 unlimited everything with contract. (*prices include $30 unlimited web for smartphone) it says.

I'm on a 700 minute family plan, so getting an "everything" plan would be even more expensive.

Yeah, I'm on an old MyFavs Family plan. Didn't want to switch to one of the newer plans since the price is right with what I have. They set me up with a $20 android data plan. Paying for text separately ($4.99 for 400), so maybe that combo of things helped get me the lower data rate??

Are you on loyalty/old plans? If so, then I need to call back about that $20 plan since they are charging me $25 and I was told $20 before.

Yes. Last time I changed my calling plan was over 2 years ago.

T-Mobile told me that any change in the contract causes the rates to change to the new rates. They are still cheaper than the rest.

You issue stems from the fact that you went to Costco to get your phone. They are an authorized VENDOR for T-Mobile, thus, they have a LOT more restrictions placed on what they could do. If you had done it at a T-Mobile corporate store, over the phone or on-line, you would have had more options open to you.

This is true for every wireless carrier that uses Authorized Dealers.

They still have lower priced data plans, but they need to be offered to you or asked for. I recently was offered the Preferred Android unlimited data plan for $20 a couple days ago.

my new plan just showed up on my account yesterday for $20, but I was offered that price since I've been with T-Mobile for like 9 years.

This was my first data plan btw. So the $20 plan is still there, it's just hard to get.

Umm, no? the "16 person" thing is due to a major flaw in the HSPA+ system.

you've been out of contract for 10 years?? you're missing out on getting cheap/free phones then.. o.o
