Help Droid X Battery "Issues"

Just my Droid X yesterday, coming from a G1, so I'm familiar with Android. I'm been having what I'll call "issues" with the battery. My wife got one as well, but so far, not really a fair comparison since I am the heavier user. Yesterday, I was just using the phone when the "connect to your charger" came on, and then phone just died. Totally kaput. I plugged it in and confirmed on the little charging widget that came up "0%" battery left. I let it charge until about 20% life, when I then powered the phone up. As soon as the phone booted up, the battery life jumped to 70% (checking in the phone status menu). I powered the phone back down and pushed the power button quickly (which is what allows you to see the charging status), which now read 70%, same as when the phone was booted up, but clearly very different than the 20% reported on that same screen about 30sec prior.

No problems with the phone during the rest of the day yesterday. Turned the phone off last night, on this AM (no calls during the morning). I had pretty good battery life showing. Made a call via bluetooth for about 5min, a few emails, and then I was on another longer call in the car - about 20min - when the phone did the same thing - just died. Brought the phone inside, plugged it in, charging screen came up - 0%.

I'm now letting it charge and will not turn it on until it gets to 100% according to the charging screen. Then will boot up.

Would welcome any input. Do I have a bad phone? Bad battery? Both bad phone and bad battery? Or is there simply some miscalibration that should fix once the phone "sees" what fully charged is from leaving it on the charge-only screen? Anything other ideas? Thx.

My battery did a similar thing. It went dead and I put it on the charger. Within 10 minutes it said it was at 50%. I took it off the charger and used it for roughly 30 minutes before it went dead again. What I had noticed is the battery icon would never show it was charging from completely empty (the icon gradually moves across the battery as it charges). I plugged it in a few moments ago and the icon began moving across the entire battery like its supposed to. Its been on the charger for half an hour now and is only at 20%. I believe these cells just need conditioning and the phone needs to calibrate the battery more than once to get the actual amount of power left in it. This can only be done by repeated charging.

I made the mistake by using my BB Storm charger b/c it fits the DX, the battery charged, but at the same time the touch screen became unresponsive until i took it off the charger..hmmm..

I thought I was the only one, I purchased a couple wall chargers when I had a evo and they would make the phone unresponsive. Figured it was just something wrong with the evo, but now with the dx its doing the same thing. Screen just becomes unresponsive. I just dont understand.
