Last chance to get a brand new Nexus One

I believe I read some where that the N1 should get gingerbread (3.0) since it's hardware can handle it. But I have to imagine that there will be much more powerful phones out there by that time. The N1 is 7 months old and phones are now starting to pass it technology wise (deicated gpu's, better screens, and I am sure soon to be faster processors (I won't get into the discussion that the snapdragon might now be the lower end of 1ghz chips)). I do believe there is plenty of life left for the N1. It's still fills the niche of being the only phone that runs stock android. But even this might be at an end since gingerbread is suppose to deal with the UI and curb the need for skins. If companies jump onboard with that idea then that niche goes out the window.

I saw a Droid X today and read the article from the OP and now I wish I wasn't locked into a 2-year contract with T-Mobile.

It IS nice having 2.2 though...

Can you give us a brief comparison? One of the top reasons I like the N1 is because I don't need a contract. But considering there is no plans for an N2 I might have to go back to the dark side when the time is right.

Well in my opinion even though the nexus is 7 months old its still able to keep up with all the new phones coming out. My friends and me and my wife all have nexus phones and weve discussed this in detail, while yes there are phone that may have slightly better specs(more mega pixels, bigger screen, custom UI) its nothing that so mind bowing to jump from the nexus to another phone. It seems we may very well end up with a collectors item

We all know that we will receive gingerbread and that is the boon of the nexus one, the google support. Im a little sad that googles idea of selling phones online didnt take off as i feel it was a pretty good way to get the type of phone you want without having to wait for your carrier, it was also successful in pushing android phone specs and raising the bar of what the android experience should be. I hope google releases another phone that they are willing to support like they have the nexus. As much as i like tmobile ive become spoiled by googles phenomenal support and it doesnt seem like tmobile would be able to compete.

Thanks, I think this answers my question. While I likely won

Good read.

It actually saddens me that Google did not succeed with the Google Web Store and that I’m going to one day have to give up the freedoms and luxuries I have with the Nexus One.

Quoted from the article, this is exactly how I feel about google not making the N2. When the time comes it will be a shame to give up these freedoms.

So just to confirm:

* one can indefinitely buy N-1 phones by just registering as a Developer for $25
* will the developer N-1 site allow you to buy the accessories? prob not. Is there a way to buy accessories like the car dock later?

Yes, Google will still sell the phone direct to developers who register as a app publisher: h**p://market.android.com/publish

I assume that when Google move past the N1 as the dev phone of choice we'll be given the opportunity to buy the next gen one (N2 or whatever it is they call it for Android 4 development).

I'll never buy a phone as part of a contract from a carrier - I'll always be buying direct from Google!
