Ok this is my second review/opinion of the HTC Hero having now had it for 2/3 months.

My first one was favourable and many aspects of it still are. The customisation of the thing is still brilliant, the apps are great, the market place is good. Overall, it does more than what I want it to which is great.

HOWEVER, as I get more used to the phone, i'm getting quicker at doing things. BUT the phone isnt as quick as me and struggles big time. I have to slow my actions down to match the capability of the phone.

Yes, I'm rooted and rom'd to Modaco 2.9, so up with the latest thing. Yes, its better than the previous ROM's.

No - it can't operate as fast as the iPhone.

Is it still better than the iPhone ? It can do much more for sure, but it hasn't got the legs to keep up with its potential.

My issues are particuarly when using 'People' and 'Handscent', but its just general use when i am multi-tasking so cant particuarly blame these 2 'apps'. The Touchflo '7 screens' can often freeze and when using the keyboard too fast, this can often freeze.

Its so annoying but maybe im asking too much of the phone. I'm going to strip back on the amount of apps I have on the phone - currently about 40 and take some of the widgets off as the full screen People widget that comes with 2.9 seems to take time to load the facebook photos sometimes.

So there you go, I dont think there is a problem with my phone per se, just that the hardware (?) can't quite cope with what's being asked of it. So i'll lower my expecations and use the phone within its capabilities so not to get too frustrated !

Still a great phone, dont get me wrong - but just needs that little more.

8/10

I am also usiung Macado's 2.9 ROM and have lag issues, although I think that this is due to one of the applications I have installed rather than the ROM itself. The main issue is with the HTC Sense screens - it can often freeze for 20 seconds. My untested theory is that it is due to K-9 email client, which recently added some background checking, but I have to test this. I have also looked at what is taking up Partial Wake time and battery and disabled or removed some applications (Missed Reminder, although good, was running almost constantly).

Android as a platform is developing quickly and I guess is going to take some time to get all the wrinkles ironed out, particularly when it comes to the overheads of graphical front ends like HTC Sense. The custom ROMs have already made significant improvements in operating speed and I am sure that this will improve over time.

Quite probably. Im going to take Handcent off and use the standard app to test. The screen freezes are less frequent but the lag in general vs using an iPhone is night and day. And when I say night and day I mean Iphone doesnt have any and Hero does :(

Handcent is very slow. I use Chomp.

My Hero has never frozen for 20 seconds while using TouchFlo/Sense. MAybe some apps are causing conflict..?

Obviously the iPhone is going to be faster. It can only do 1 THING AT A TIME. 1 App has all the Processing power.
The Hero on the other hand MULTITASKS. It juggles about many processes and is constantly updating information etc.

Example:-

iPhone = Ferrari F430
Hero = Ferrari 360

Both relatively as fast as each other if just going to race in a straight 1/4 mile drag race.

But the Hero 'Ferrari Driver' will be juggling balls, performing magic tricks and doing yoga at the same time as shifting gears and accelerating.

The iPhone 'Ferrari Driver' will have his foot planted to the floor and being lazy by not doing anything else as it isn't capable of doing anything else!

Therefore, the iPhone is bound to be faster.

So stop comparing a crappy iPhone that can only do 1 THING AT A TIME to something that can do 10+ THINGS AT A TIME.
[/fail]

[sarcasm]
It's the most stupid comparison ever. Oh look a Cheetah is faster than a Snail!
[/sarcasm]

This is where you want to go.

I don't have any iPhone feelings so you can't hurt them :p but I must admit that only now do I understand why they put their limitations in place.

Not to bash the Hero any further it feels slightly like a case of (if we want to stick with cars - Porsche vs TVR. But hey I'd take a Sagaris everytime :D

You are always going to get the iPhone comparisons - as even the experts are comparing the 2 so there is no trying to get away from this.

Anyhow..this is my take on the matter and like I said, I guess ill just limit my phone to work within its capabilities. I wont be going to Apple anytime soon, put it that way

Basically, you open Music, the Internet, a game, whatever and it always keeps your session open at the the point you close the screen.

With iPhone it will kill the app and you will have to restart it.

Although I havent quite figured out the bonuses of multi-tasking yet - hence my gripe with lag.

You can only visit one screen at a time after all. And anyway, (if you didnt know) you can long press the Home key to show your last 6 open apps. But most of them have a lag delay in opening anyway defeating the point of multitask altogether IMHO. Only Browser opens up instantly for me.

So how does this multi tasking work then?

Having used both (original iPhone and 3G) the difference I have seen is iPhone can open and run an app faster. However with widgets on the Hero's home screens I don't have to find the app and open it - even if individual apps aren't quite so quick.

So where I use Facebook email messages and twitter I find it quicker to check and update on the Hero than doing the same on the iPhone.

Does this make one phone better than another? It all depends on how you use your phone. For some people one phone will be the best while for others it will be a different phone.

I prefer working with widgets so the Hero is imo the best and beats iPhone - but that's because of the way I use the phone.

simple scenario of how multitasking is useful

you are playing a game, it is a tough level, you almost beat it, then, DING, you have a new email!

with multitaking you can switch to email app, pauses your game, read your email, reply

then DING! you have a new text message, switch to that, oooooo, someone asked you what the capital of delaware is, crap!

no worries, just switch to your browser and google it, go back to your messaging app, finish writing your reply, send it, then go back and finish that game

Yeah but the iphone is so quick at closing and opening apps. You'd just save your game, exit, open email, read email, exit, reopen game, save game, exit, open messaging, read message, exit, open browser, Google, exit, open messaging, reply, reopen game.

And it would all be silky smooth and probably quicker than any multi tasking phone. We all know it's true.

So why are you preaching your love for the iPhone on an Android forum?

go to the iPhone forum...

Mines not laggy unless im juggling a lot of apps, get taskpanel X and set up the autokiller, also kill apps whenever you notice lag. Restarting the phone every week gives it a refresh too.

Same. I have many many apps. I have no lag what so ever..I am using the latest HTC ROM 2.73.405.5 and it is smooth, fast and responsive. When I 1st got the phone the ROM on there was outdated and yes that was laggy when going through the homescreens but as soon as I upgraded it..It was like I had a new phone in my hand. It was a WOW moment :)

So when you go into people and do a long flick up and watch the names scroll you dont see any lag whatsoever? Then dive into call history and do the same? Yes it's fast but mine is slightly jittery as if it's dropping a few frames. I'm on the lastest rom and also use taskiller and hardly have any apps.

I have just tried and tested this. Works flawlessly. I will try put up a HD video later on today to show you... No lag

This is a played out debate in this forum. If you prefer the iPhone over a Hero, or think it's better then why get the Hero and moan about it?

If you wanna put a car analagy on it (as appears to be popular in this thread) it would be like saying "I can afford the Aston... but I think I'll go with the Punto"

This is a forum for users of the Hero to talk about their phone, get to know it a bit better and find solutions to any problems they may have. If you think the iPhone is that much better, go and buy one. If you want to start arguments and constantly moan about the phone, please do it in another forum.

Thank you! This is exactly what I have been saying.

How ever one minor diagreement.. Aston > Punto.. The hero isn't a Punto. Let's call it a SL55 with all the bells and whistles  It's not that slow lol..A tad slower than the Aston but not dropping to the Punto standards :D

Sorry I think you misunderstood, I just meant it would be like beign able to have something you love but going with something hate for the sake of it.

I love the Hero, and think it is much better than the iPhone (it's great for playing games, but thats it!)

Ha! When someone comes along and posts a comment like that it just to try and stir things up. I'm here to talk about lag, if that brings up certain comparisons then so be it.

If your here to talk about the Hero, then the iPhone needen't be mentioned. The only thing causing a stir in the forum is that it is mentioning the iPhone. You specifically stated you think it is so much quicker, you are the one stirring.

This thread has run it's course, and unless it steers back to something vaugley on topic, I will close it. If you have problems with lag, try talking about it in the forum where you downloaded your ROM from.
