Accessories Car dock not charging

I have a problem with charging through the car mount as well.

It's behavior is erratic - I turn the car on first, the charger LED indicates that it is working and ready to go. I mount the X and the car charger LED turns off and there is no charging. I even tried mounting the X first, then turning the car on - that doesn't work either. No matter what the order.

I'll start driving around and all of a sudden, it starts charging. Then all of a sudden (after 5 minutes or even more than 1 hour) it stops charging. IT MAKES NO SENSE!!!! Something isn't right... there's gotta be more than one thread about this!

Are any of you using the silicon case? I noticed the silicon case makes the phone rise a bit over time and stop charging.

Now I am caseless. (Well, I still use my leather pouch with belt clip)

Charging fine on car dock.

I am not using a case. The LED light is ON when nothing is mounted. Then I mount the X and the LED goes off. So it must know that the phone is mounted - it just charges only when it wants to, which is like 5% of the time!

I've searched the net for solutions to this problem, but haven't yet found one. I have noticed that the newest post I've seen complaining about it was about August or September of 2010 though, so I'm hopefull that a solution has been found. I returned the first car dock I bought for a replacement, and it is behaving in the same way as the first one. The first time I hooked everything together, it all seemed to work, and the DX said it was charging. After that, no charging through the dock. Like others, the DX charges fine on the home plug and the car charger, and it shows a USB connection in the top bar when connected through the car dock. However, it doesn't show the "lightning bolt" charging indicator when on the dock, and the battery level declines as though it is not being charged. I would really like to be able to use the car dock when I'm driving, but I have to be able to power the phone with the charger and charge the battery at the same time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My car dock charges fine now. However, when using ANY regular car charger, the battery will not charge when running any systems. This is because there is not enough amps in the charger to charge the battery faster than you are depleting it. I am currently using an inverter that puts out 2+ amps at 100 watts. This charges my phone when using GPS and when using GPS + bluetooth or a radio app holds the battery at level or barely charges it depending upon length of the trip. Most car chargers only put out 0.5-1 amp and therefore running apps while driving kills the battery, although not as fast as no charger, a regular car charger just delays the battery dying.

My X kept going black in the car dock and I finally pulled over and figured out it wasn't charging, and acting as if it had timed out. I unplugged the dock, hooked the charger directly to the X, charging symbol with no problem. :D Plugged the dock back up, set the phone in the car cradle, no charging symbol! The dock is only 1 month old....

I'm having the same or very similar issue. I have a Powerjolt Dual Universal USB Micro made by Griffin and the OEM USB charger hooked up to that. When I plug directly into the USB my phone charges fine. When I plug into the car dock and dock my phone however I do no get a charge at all. The battery manager app (Power Manger) that I use reports for a split second (when placed on the car dock) "A/C power profile applied" but then immediately switches back to "Battery Power profile applied" which tells me that the phone must be seeing some current. I've ordered a Dual USB A to Micro B cable since the Powerjolt offers 2 1 amp USB ports in attempt to get enough power out of it. We'll see if that works. Anyone else have any ideas?

At least with my car dock and charger the Droid X in the cradel needs to tilt a little forward from the top for the micro USB connector to make a more secure fit. After folding a couple spare business cards and placing behind the Droid X in the cradle it charges fine. Kind of hokey if you ask me. The manufacturer of the card dock should include some foam sticker padding in the packaging and include troubleshooting tips for this. Hope this helps everyone else out!

There are two things to look at. first, I have had to replace my power cord at least once already because the cord got broken at the connector. The cord leaves the dock facing the front of the car, but the cord has to make a 180 degree turn the drop down the dash to my power outlet. Depending on how tight that turn is, you can damage your cord over time.

Secondly, you need to replace the OEM lighter plug with a higher power third party plug. The OEM does not output enough power to run the phone with the screen on, GPS on, etc. There have been many threads on this. But if you phone uses the battery and has less charge when you use the car dock after a trip than what you started the trip with, then this is the problem.

i have the same problem with my dx....i think it has to do with the conection between the phone and the dock...like the plug in the dock is not making a good conection. if i put my phone in the dock at just the right angle it will work till i hit a bump or something like that then i have to adjust it again.

I have this same problem.. Two Samsung Droid Charge's, two car docks, hard-wired.. they will charge when they seem to feel like it.. However, once they do start to charge, I haven't seen them "stop" charging.. and they go into doc mode so there's no issue there.. both phones behave the same in either dock.. sometimes they will start charging right away, and sometimes not. I have not seen a pattern.. However, as with a USB charger on these phones, it barely keeps up with the battery usage.. Also - this did not improve (the charging in the car dock) after the GB update - that's why I thought I would add that the problem isn't fixed.. someone above may have the right variables as far as how far "dis-charged" the battery is.. although sometimes mine will charge almost right away on a full battery and sometimes it won't.
