2.2 OC'ed compared to DInc, DX

After a series of frustrations in getting a properly working Incredible and now an X in my hands, and being less than excited about the locked down status of the newer Moto phones, and the apparent low cost an original Droid can be picked up for, I am thinking of getting one of them instead.

So how does the Droid overclocked with 2.2 stack up performance wise to the newer 1GHz phones?

Download Quadrent from the Market and see what your stock score is....I'm curious.

My Droid at 1ghz scored a 1338.

When I was running 1.2 ghz I could get 17xx pretty regularly but it didn't seem stable.

I don't have an Android phone at all. I guess I am just curious whether it is worth it to get one of the newer phones for the performance boost or if I should snag a cheaper, readily-available, easily-modded original droid.

Alright, guys, the op does not have an android phone so quadrant scores in and of themselves probably don't mean much. What everyone is trying to say is that benchmark results with 2.2 overclocked show a substantial performance advantage over everything out there. The only thing that really comes close is the nexus one with 2.2.

Look through the rom subforums and you can see a graphical representation of these benchmark results which really helps. Hhonestly, performance differences will probably be negligible until the newer phones achieve root/overclock, and the upgrade to 2.2 seems to help a lot.

The biggest differences are just the hardware featuresets.

As far as raw speed goes, the Droid, when overclocked to over 1GHz is actually the fastest Android phone around. HOWEVER, the big limiting factor is that it only has 256mb of RAM and all the newer phones have 512mb. This means that switching between applications will be slower and you may find that when you try to go back to the home screen it will take a few seconds to load the icons.

How much you are affected by this will be determined by how many widgets/icons you have on your home screens, whether you are using a live wallpaper, and how much RAM is used up by the apps you have loaded.

It's swings and roundabouts really. My Droid on 2.2 @ 1.2ghz is silky smooth once you have the browser or maps or whatever loaded, but switching between apps is where you will notice the newer phones feel much faster.

Keep in mind both the DInc and X will receive 2.2 pretty soon and if it gives them anywhere the performance boost that the Droid got, it kind of solves the problem. I know nothing about the Inc development community, but I imagine it's pretty rockin. So, if rooting and ROMing is a big priority, I'd go there. If a big ass honkin screen is, than the X (those are two very simplistic differences obviously).

Because it has been proven the Droid X can run 3D applications much smoother and at a higher frame rate than the droid could ever dream of.

I'm not calling you a liar, I'm just curious to know where you saw this. Other than double the RAM (which could indeed make a 3D application run faster if the application needs more RAM than the Droid can provide) the chip is essentially the same OMAP die with a higher stock clock speed.

A Droid at over 1ghz will do floating point calculations faster than a Droid X at stock speed. Since the original post is about an overclocked Droid vs a Droid X that is a fair comparison. If you are comparing a stock Droid to a Droid X then you would be right, but your point would also be completely irrelevant with regards to this thread.

That being said there could simply be something about the Droid X that I don't know and I'd love to be proven wrong.

EDIT: Bah! You posted while I was writing this.

I just ran a neocore test on my droid with froyo at 1.1ghz. It got 24.5 fps. The x with 2.1 gets 45fps. This may have to do with the fact that the cpu is better even at the same clock speed.

Edit: just ran the test at 400 mhz and got 23.7fps. So the test is not cpu bound. Odd results if they use the same.gpu.

I guess there's more to it than I realized. There are differences between the 3430 in the Droid and the 36xx in the Droid X.

Here's the docs: OMAP™ Applications Processors - OMAP™ 3 Processors

I couldn't see anything specific that noted a difference between the two Power VR GPUs, or really any differences at all in the specifications, but I didn't spend much time looking to be honest :p

I'm a bit confused by the OPs posts on this one here......

I got pre-ordered an Incredible but it was defective and when I returned it, it was backordered for several weeks. So I just decided to wait for the X, and my launch day order was cancelled for "at my request, due to fraud", apparently because I was visiting my folks and had a separate shipping and billing address on the order, and of course now that is backordered.

So basically, I have been trying to get an android phone for a few months now, with no luck.

The x and dinc have more rom also a big difference. my dinc oc'd 1228.8 with froyo got 1770 quadrant and 48 mflops, 60fps on gears.

stock froyo it still got 1290 quadrant

While that is true, extra ROM space (and it's not really ROM - Read Only Memory - since you can save to it) is just more storage space. It wouldn't affect performance in any way.

Those are good scores but not uncommon for a Droid clocked at those sort of speeds.

Clock for clock it's pretty much agreed that the OMAP is superior to the Snapdragon.

I ordered a Dinc about 45 days ago, waited with anticipation for 30 days for it to arrive. However, when I got it I had trouble keeping a signal, touch screen was not reliable when plugged in, and bluetooth didn't function correctly. The in and out signal was a deal killer for me. I went yesterday and exchanged it for the Moto Droid and a ton of accessories (much to the amazement of the people in the store), rooted it last night, installed BB 0.4 and have not looked back.
This phone has great reception, and runs to the naked eye as fast as my Dinc.
I am pleased with my decision and look forward to many fun times playing with my Rooted Droid.

Just scored a 1400 in quadrant with my 2.2 droid original overclocked to 1ghz. Had my heart set on the X but until the X is cracked I won't upgrade. If I never knew about rooting and custom roms then the X would have been a huge upgrade. If a non techie wanted my opinion I would say go with the X. The majority of people out there care less about custom roms and overclocking. These forums only represent a small percentage of people buying android's.
